A NEW idea for an opposites book--great to see!

Highly recommended for hockey lovin' little ones and any parent who is bored with the `usual' opposites books. Bold illustrations and novel opposites like `defender and winger' and `miss and goal' will interest and engage your little one. Great fun. - Biblio Reads Children's Book Review

Fast & Easy Read - Just right for a rainy afternoon

My day started out with rain and I was trying to decide what book I was going to settle in with for the afternoon. I'm a big fan of author Barbra Annino, so when I saw this short story about the Pretty Little Liars series I thought I'd check it out, and I wasn't disappointed.

What teenager wouldn't love to see their Mom in a different light and then to find out she had a secret? Even better right? Maybe something to hold over her head when she won't let you get your way? Of course first they'd have to find out what it was. Stained was concise, had the feel of Rosewood and will keep you wondering when/if "A" was going to strike!

The events leading up to the ending will keep you turning the pages (or in my case, advancing my Kindle) and you won't want to stop reading. Of course there is always a plot twist right? You may or may not see this twist coming but in true Pretty Little Liars fashion, it's there. Stained was concise and will keep you wondering when/if "A" was going to strike! I liked how the story brought an adult theme to the teen series and even though my daughters are no longer teenagers, I'll be recommending they check this book out! I'm quite sure they will feel the same as me that Barbra stayed true to Sara Shepard's series.

Thanks for a great read on an otherwise rain filled afternoon!

As a huge fan of the TV series Pretty Little Liars I was excited to discover that one of my favorite authors, Barbra Annino, had written a short story Stained as a spin off of the series. Stained captured the essence of Rosewood and it's established characters and explored an aspect of a mother's past with a SUPRISE ending. Stained would make a great TV story line. A must read if you like Pretty Little Liars!

Are you as big of a fan of Pretty Little Liars than I am ? I love Pretty Little Liars and it makes me sad thinking what am I going to do when it's eventually over. Searching on Amazon the other day, I came across a collection of Short Stories called Pretty Little Liars - Kindle Worlds. They are basically spin-off Pretty Little Liars stories. I was over-joyed so I purchased a whole lot of them and put the rest on my amazon wishlist. Today's one is called Stained and follows the Montgomery Family. Stained's theme is that the Liar doesn't fall far from the tree and in this case it's a like mother, like daughter scenario as "A" threatens to tell the world about Aria's mother Ella. Years ago, when Ella was in college she fell in love with her Art Professor just like Aria was with Ezra and her father Byron with Meredith - must run in the family , these student/teacher relationships and it seems that "A" knows all about it and sends Aria and Hanna on a PLL Hunt gathering clues about Ella's past. We discover that in college , Ella was an amazing artist and was given a job on the side of painting forgeries and it seems that twenty years later the secret has come to bite Ella Montgomery on the bottom. Can Hanna and Aria stop "A" from ruining her mum's image and gallery ? Or will "A" once again find a way to outsmart the girls and be one step ahead the whole time ?

About the Author

Noah Manring is the Glen A. Barton Professor for Fluid Power in the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department at the University of Missouri–Columbia (UMC). Before joining the faculty at UMC, he worked for eight years in the off-highway mobile equipment industry. Dr. Manring holds ten U.S. patents for innovations in the field of fluid power. As a professor, he has received research funding from Caterpillar, Inc., Festo Corp., and the National Fluid Power Association, among others, as well as the U.S. Department of Education, the National Science Foundation, and various private donors. Dr. Manring currently serves as the Associate Dean for Research in the College of Engineering at the University of Missouri. He has done consulting work for several industrial firms, including Moog Inc., FMC Wyoming Corp., Dennison Hydraulics, and Parker Hannifin.

Well written but only one design

This book is very well written and thorough in its explanation of how to design a cylinder driven hydrostatic drive. The reason I gave it three stars instead of five is because the title is misleading. The title makes you think that the book is going to talk about numerous designs of pumps and motors. Instead, only one design is discussed--a major shortfall in my eyes. I was hoping this book would cover items like the Francis turbine, gear motors, screw motors, various pump designs, etc. However, it was just the one design that was discussed.

Great lesson to learn ... funny presentation

The expression "busy as a beaver" is a commonly used one, as we all know these animals to be an incredibly busy bunch. This one is no exception. The only problem is, he is so busy that he doesn't take any time to think things through. He's distracted and careless. He fells more trees than he needs, leaves the forest a mess, and builds sub-par damns. Worst of all, the other animals are starting to get hurt by the beaver's careless ways. Bear is clunked in the head by a piece of fallen wood, birds have lost their nest, and moose once looked down at his own leg to see his own leg being enthusiastically chewed.

The mayhem continues until the day the beaver miscalculates the direction of a falling tree and finds himself pinned under it. He wakes up in the hospital, flat on his back, covered in bruises and bandages.While recuperating, the beaver has time to self-reflect. He finally notices the mess he has made of the forest and his injured friends. He feels terrible and resolves to make amends.

Understandably, the others are worried about the beaver's return to the forest, but he remains true to his word. He apologizes to his friends, cleans up the forest, plants saplings to replace the missing trees, and builds a nest for the homeless birds. The beaver also discovers when he isn't rushing around frantically felling as many trees as possible, he has time for other activities he loves .... like naps. And the whole forest is at peace.

I like how every one of Oldland's book has a lesson to be learned. This is pretty much "stop and smell the roses" but with a "don't chew on your friend's leg" presentation. It is adorable and so very funny. There are plenty of hilarious illustrations, like the way the momma bird clutches her babies in her wings and glares balefully at the beaver after he demolishes her tree. Fantastic way to read your kids an important lesson.

Fun Characters, with A Mild and Deftly Delivered Message

There are lots of books out there that address personal problems, (bedwetting, fear of the dark), social issues, (bullying, meanness), or larger issues, (environment, gender equality). That's fine and productive and there's plenty of room on the shelf for all of them. But sometimes such books can be so humorless or heavy-handed or tone deaf that they fail of their basic purpose or even generate negative reactions. After all, even the littlest readers can sense when they are being pushed around by a book's author.

I like and admire Oldland's work because he starts with engaging characters, draws them with wit and style, and then gently moves them and the reader to a mild and affirmative insight. Whether the message is to cooperate, to slow down and smell the roses, to think before acting, or some other Aesop-approved virtue, his woodland knuckleheads always come out well and wiser by the end.

The drawings are simple and basic. Despite that, they are infused with personality and attitude. I don't know how you draw an exasperated Moose, or a fed up Bird, or a hyper and then apologetic Beaver, but luckily for us Oldland does know how to do that. And he pulls this off with a light, winking underlying good-humor, and just a touch of the absurd that appeals to me and, more importantly, to kids.

These books don't strike me as syrupy or as overly earnest or as preachy. They're lighter than that - gentle, expressive and good humored. You don't need an exclusive diet of that, but I welcome treats where I find them.

Bernard Lievegoed was a distinguished physician, educator, and industrial psychologist. He founded the NPI, which pioneered new approaches to business management. For his book Man on the Threshold, Professor Lievegoed was awarded the Golden Quill literary award of the Netherlands Publishers' Association. He died in 1992.

A Practical Spiritual Guide for Life's Challenges

I read this book quite a few years ago and find that I turn to it again and again to fathom what it is I am going through at a particular time in my life. Lievegood invariably describes it dead-on and gives real advice about how to meet the challenge consciously and successfully. I was impressed by his saying that some life crises cannot be avoided; they belong to the path of life and are meant to be gone through. But there is a way to go through them. What an empowering book!

A concise introduction to the notion of phases of life

This is a concise and very useful introduction to the notion of the biological, psychological, and spiritual phases of life. The treatement is literate and learned and the author provides a useful review of the key ideas of some of the major thinkers, ancient and modern in this area of thinking about life.
It is especially useful for an introduction and overview because he has accomplished these things with concision. But it is writen to an educated audience which will not be reading about psychoanalysis, empiricism, behaviorism, and so on for the first time.
The only reason I gave this book a four vice five star rating is because the translation from the Dutch is a little lacking in some places.

John Hawkes (1925–1998) was a postmodern novelist born in Stamford, Connecticut, and educated at Harvard University. He was noted for his unconventional style and views on the creation of literature and was admired by Flannery O’Connor, Robert Penn Warren, Saul Bellow, Anthony Burgess, Jeffrey Eugenides, and Donald Barthelme.

Oddly surrealist little mystery.

John Hawkes, The Lime Twig (New Directions, 1960)
A friend of mine once said of the film Eraserhead that it was as close as cinema came to capturing a nightmare onscreen. (I disagree, but the parallel is useful.) The Lime Twig, in that sense, is the rough literary equivalent of Eraserhead; it's a Dick Francis novel edited by Jean-Paul Sartre with finishing touches added by Aime Cesaire. The whole contains a marked nightmarish quality; for once, I was actually grateful for the blurb writer at New Directions explaining some of the basics to me as I went along.
The story revolves around one of the oldest plots in horse racing; a team of small-time crooks buy an old racehorse to enter in a stakes race, the Golden Bowl at Aldington Race Course (being a Neanderthal American, I've no idea whether there actually is an Aldington Race Course in England). The horse in question won the race a number of time previously, but in the days before lifetime past performances, few bettors had memories stretching back five and six years. The crooks alone are enough to make the nameless rabble in Reservoir Dogs look like competent professionals, but things get worse when a big-time operation decides it wants in on the deal. (This is the part where the blurb on the back saved me; I figured out that others were getting in on the action, but they seem just as disorganized as the first lot, only more savage about it.)
Everything is presented as a kind of pointillist painting; pieces float in and out, some disappearing altogether, some being tied up at the end. Hawkes relies on the reader perhaps more than any other mystery writer here to fill in some blanks. This is in no way a bad thing; when has an author been criticized for OVERestimating the intelligence of his audience? However, readers of more mainstream mystery novelists may feel as if pieces are still missing by the end. (Jessica Fletcher Mr. Hawkes is not. There are no neat pages of explanation at the end.) A couple of re-reads of the most relevant passages will suffice to tie things up, and unlike most mystery authors, Hawkes does very little in the way of stopping the reader from recognizing the major foreshadowing or clue-dropping as it happens. And yes, despite all that, the book still reads as if the reader has taken a rather large dose of laudanum before sitting down.
As with most New Directions books, there is a core of critics who feel John Hawkes is the best thing for the mystery genre since, and perhaps before, sliced bread. This may well be the case. There's no denying the effectiveness of Hawkes' literary style and his ability to keep the reader turning pages despite it. However, it's one of those cases where it almost seems too much of a good thing. To draw another film parallel, Alejandro Jodorowsky, who holds much the same core-of-critics role in film as Hawkes does in letters, created a few masterpieces of exactly this sort. His most famous film, El Topo, just goes way over the edge, and its style eclipses its substance too far. I got that feeling more than once while reading The Lime Twig, and while I'd certainly recommend it for fans of the ubiquitous British Horse Racing Mystery™, it should probably come with a "warning: literary writing ahead" sticker. *** ½

Style if not Substance

In the introduction to the 1968 New Directions edition, Leslie Fielder calls this "a dangerous book of the past." While I am not on my knees in praise of this book, I am in awe of its style and prose. This is naturalistic writing at its most descriptive. A small example: "...smells that were never killed by cleaning nor destroyed by rain." That kind of sentence, and myriad others like it, deserve a better story. The plot that this writing is hung on is feeble, using that old war horse (oops) of a fixed race and the scoundrels, ne'er do wells and innocents that inhabit such a world. Every other reviewer has compared this deceptively slender volume as hallucinogenic, nightmarish, an example of pointillistic plotting. I agree. The motivations of characters are at times obscure, and how some would arrive from point a to point b is sometimes downright baffling. But if the trip means more to you than the destination, this is a great book. A side note, the introduction referred to earlier should be read after not before the novel since it reveals far too many plot points than it should.

MEETS ALL EXPECTATIONS - GOOD AND BAD

Yes, John Hawkes' novel is an impressionistic hallucination-inducing piece of writing that you wade through in slow motion and gradually have an idea of the story he's telling. But the story, the plot, is clearly secondary to his style. Some will feel superior for "getting it" and others will slam the book shut with a cluster of cartoon question marks above their heads. I'm in the camp that appreciates the beauty of his writing - there are an awful lot of "smells" in this book, and how adroitly he sketches in one disconnected scene after another - but I also found it slow going and occasionally annoying.
I went to the trouble to get this book and read it because Flannery O'Connor, whom I adore, was one of his few great admirers. And if she liked it, I knew it had to be good. She did say, though, that it's like a bad dream you can't escape from. To that I say "amen." Worth the experience for people who consider themselves ecclectic readers.

Undetected corrosion stress cracks caused an eyebar on the Ohio side to fracture; because the eyebars were linked together in a chain, the failure of one led to the catastrophic collapse of the entire bridge. In total, 46 lives were lost in the disaster.
