Wonderful Book for Very Young "Readers"

My son is only five months old but shows an interest in books and loves being read to! This book is one of his favorites. The pictures grab his attention and it is a perfect length for little readers. As children grow and develop this book allows them to participate more by counting the objects on each page. We also really enjoys ABC of Canada and I would highly recommend both books.

A vivid Canadian counting book

Children loved recognizing the "Canadian" items as much as they loved to count them. Some careful thought has gone into the placement of the items to be counted. There is a lot of potential conversation around how to count them, where to start, where to end, half on the page, boaters or boats...And the text is simple enough that the number talk can happen quite naturally. The kindle edition means I can project the image to share with the class or share it one on one on my ipad. This is a great addition to an early educator's collection or a book to curl up with your child to enjoy!

In the stratosphere of 3D technology, this book is instrumental in one's deep understanding on the functionality and detailed approach in tackling a 3D production. From it's carefully designed examples of 3D pictures, to the glasses which come with the book, "3D Storytelling.." is an immersive and exciting read! I highly recommend it to anybody who seeks to learn more about 3D. It's a must have for any filmmaker, student, or artist!!!!!

Bruce and Phil lay out the story in a clear consise manner. This book is for those who want to understand the transition to true 3D storytelling. Too often today filmmakers are in fear of 3D because they really don't understand it. This book goes a long way in solving that.

Der Neomaterialismus steht für eine Grundhaltung, die postmaterielle Werte der '68er Generation wie Solidarität, Toleranz, idealistische Selbstverwirklichung und die Kritik an gesellschaftlicher Ungerechtigkeit und Unterdrückung durch ein neomaterialistisches Wertesetting ersetzt, in dem die beherrschenden Werte Sicherheit, Konsum, sozialer Aufstieg, Nutzenorientierung und Affirmation der gesellschaftlichen Verhältnisse sind. Berechtigt ist nur, was sich vor dem Richterstuhl der ökonomischen Imperative bewähren kann. Was sich nicht verwerten lässt, wird exkludiert, auch wenn es sich dabei um Menschen handelt.
In verschulten und autoritär reglementierten Universitäten, in denen Bildung durch die unkritische Akkumulation von Fachwissen und dessen Abprüfung im geistlosen Multiple-Choice-Verfahren verdrängt wird, werden die Jugendlichen systematisch für die Verwendung im Markt hergerichtet. Kritische Reflexionen sind nicht mehr gefragt. Bildung als Erziehung zur Freiheit, als Persönlichkeitsbildung, als Förderung von kreativen und ästhetischen Fähigkeiten, Bildung der "Gesinnung und des Charakters" (Humboldt) - alles längst verabschiedet und auf den Müllhaufen der Geschichte geworfen. Am Ende verlässt schön verpacktes Humankapital die bildungsökonomisch hocheffizienten Ausbildungsfabriken.
Doch die gut ausgebildeten Ungebildeten sind ängstliche Kreaturen. Mit begrenztem Horizont und engem Herz geht diese neue Elite durch die Welt, die Angst im Nacken, von anderen, ebenso "coolen" Charakteren wie sie selbst aus dem Feld geschlagen zu werden.

Tropical Storm Agnes, along with the unprecedented flooding which resulted from it, is arguably the most significant event to have transpired in the Harrisburg area in the last 150 years. Over the course of June 21 and June 22, 1972, Agnes drenched the region with more than a foot of rain. As a result, the Susquehanna River rose to record-breaking levels and backed into the already overwhelmed feeding creeks and streams. In Harrisburg, armed National Guardsmen patrolled the vacant streets and set up checkpoints to enforce a curfew and deter looting. Surrounded by floodwaters, row homes near the governor's mansion burned, and firefighters waded through chest-high water as they attempted to reach the blaze. Entire neighborhoods in both Shipoke and Steelton were ultimately lost due to the high waters entering homes. To this day, Agnes continues to serve as the measuring stick by which all storms since have been judged.

trip down memory lane

i bought this as a gift. it was a hit. the pictures remind you of times past and a simpler life. the recipient has read it and studied the pictures at least twice since May. although the book addresses a somewhat sad topic, it highlights how people worked together and how the human spirit can triumph over anything.

So accurate the only thing Missing is the Smell

Having lived through TS Agnes from the middle of Harrisburg, I can vouch for this book's accuracy and realism. Doleful memories that I thought were long gone soon re-emerged as I turned the pages. The author did an admirable job of including every important aspect of the flood-- and several things that either I didn't know or had forgotten.

The worst part of the Harrisburg inundation was in the Cameron Street corridor. Then the waters receded, they left behind an oily foot-high "bathtub ring" and stench that was part of the landscape for years.

Every serious historian of Harrisburg should own a copy of this book. Because of its vividness, readers of this book can appreciate how this epoch-making flood so quickly changed the shape and demography of the region--and the lives of so many of its residents.

In later years, however—like the roses in the title poem—she reemerged as an artist and as a teacher, inspiring a new generation of painters at Urbana University.

Archie was faced with the challenge of raising a child according to her own unique principles in the midst of a doubting and critical family. Given Archie's expectations—based on idealized memories of her parents' roles—it probably would have been difficult to arrive at a meeting of the minds with John about his paternal role even in the privacy of a home of their own. In the midst of the James family, it must have been doubly difficult for Archie to create the environment she wanted for David. A hint of the complications involved comes from a niece, Harriet Eaton Whitehead, who recalls that Archie would read Shakespeare to David in his high chair at lunchtime, oblivious to the fact that he was throwing his food on the floor. Perhaps David would have preferred more personalized attention, but Archie was intent on creating a proper sphere, doing her best to surround him with beautiful language.

The scene was set for complications for both Archie and David. David was not only rejected as a James, but he was surrounded by children who were "in" when he was "out," and the judgment continued even though the Eatons soon moved to Massachusetts. David got mixed signals, his mother often favoring a course of action criticized by the rest of the family. His father's tendency to ignore disagreements among the women or handle them with humor probably added to the complications with which Archie had to deal.

Did David know of his adoption? Perhaps not. Marian May Clarke remembers that Archie “wanted everyone to erase from their minds the fact of David's (adoption) and think of him as her own child. ..."

Flicka Ricka and Dicka Learn About Those Less Fortunate

Possibly the best children's story I have ever seen about charity.
Flicka, Ricka and Dicka's mother is ready for canning, but does not know what fruit to use. The girls decide they should pick strawberries. Their mother tells them it is a good idea and will pay them for each basket they fill.
The girls go out the next morning but the quest for strawberries takes them far from home. Tired and thirsty they try to return home and discover they are lost. They find a cottage and ask for help. There they meet a very friendly and helpful family (mother, daughter and baby boy). The girls notice that while everything is clean, all the clothes are patched. The girl helps them get home after they have had a drink of water (sometimes there is not enough milk for the baby).
When the girls are paid for their work, they decide that they really have all they need and decide to spend their coins on the helpful family. Canned strawberries, a dress for the girl and a teddy bear for the boy are bought and taken to the family.

wonderfully sweet book

I searched for these books for years after reading them as a little girl during the 70's. What a joy it has been to re-read them with my own girls. This particular book is the favorite in the series of my older daughter.
The Sweedish triplets demonstrate ingenuity, compassion, independence, and an adventuresome spirit.

About the Author
Maurizio de Giovanni lives and works in Naples. In 2005, he won a writing competition for unpublished authors with a short story set in the thirties about Commissario Ricciardi, which was then turned into the first novel of the series. His books have been successfully translated into French, Spanish and German, and are now available in English.

Tolerable

A little better than the first volume in the Commissario Ricciardi series, but not gripping. We find out more about the commissario's experience of seeing the dead (but only those who did not die naturally). His strange love affair with the woman across the street whom he has never met takes a new turn, and Ricciardi is sought after by a femme fatale from the first novel.

The characters sometimes seem as if they had been lifted from a Chandler novel and been transmuted to Italy--bizarre. They don't really develop, they just acqulre strange new features. (Ricciardi is constantly described as friendless but his brigadier, the medical examiner, the priest, his Tata Rosa, Livia, and the lady across the street all adore him.) The plot in this one is more complicated and subtle than first appears, but I wouldn't particularly recommend this series. The only reason to read more would be to find out what happens to the young lady across the street, and to the medical examiner, who is all too plainly marked for a negative encounter with Mussolini's partisans.

Enjoyable but weird.

Enjoyable but weird. Talk about suspension of disbelief. Most cops don't commune with the dead, at least I don't think so. But once you ignore that, its a well written page turner. I also enjoyed that it is set in Italy in the early Mussolini era but avoids too much of that.

It took me a little while to get into it, but once I got used to his style of writing, turns out it is a great book! Good mystery, great character development. Very subtle. Give it a chance!
