Myron Magnet, editor-at-large of City Journal, is the author of The Dream and the Nightmare and Dickens and the Social Order. He was awarded a National Humanities Medal by President George W. Bush in 2008. He lives in New York City.

Foretelling Homes

A clever approach to better understanding a select set of Founders and Framers based on the influence their homes had on them and their influence in the shaping of the home. William Livingston of NJ, John Jay and Alexander Hamilton of NY, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and the Lee Family of VA are the biographic subjects examined.
Not unexpectedly, most of the book is conventional biography of the subjects, but the architectural influence is always the highlight of each biography. Author Myron Magnet makes the read sparkle with clear prose and insightful observations and conclusions about his subjects. Chapter 7 on Hamilton captures the accomplishments, genius and zeal of Hamilton as well as most authors can manage in a full biography. And Chapter 10 on Madison offers a number of suggestions that explain Mr. Madison's political and philosophical shift away from Federalist to Republican and away from key arguments he had made earlier as one of three contributors (under the pseudo-name) "Publius", in "The Federalist". In Chapter 2, Magnet presents an inexplicably FAR more sympathetic portrait of Arthur Lee than the bitter, obstreperous, and quarrelsome account usually presented by other historians. Read Lee himself in, The Founders on the Founders: Word Portraits from the American Revolutionary Era. (How does any biographer "fall in love" with Arthur Lee?; see Richard Henry Lee of Virginia: A Portrait of an American Revolutionary) Still... this is a thoroughly recommended read - either as a start for these subjects, or following the read of complete biographies of the subjects. For a similar treatment of architecture in history also see Professor Ryan K. Smith's impressive: Robert Morris's Folly: The Architectural and Financial Failures of an American Founder.

The kindle edition contains a number of illustrations and drawings that aid in the read in hardcopy format. The e-ink (non Fire) kindle struggles with resolution to adequately reproduce many of the illustrations. The publisher saved a few hours of copy editing by NOT linking the page-citations to the notes: an odd way of bilking the e-book format, and unfortunate for those who frequently follow a note to learn more, or where! Of course the index is similarly unlinked, giving the e-book all of the cumbersomeness of a paper book and ignoring the advantages of an electronic publication. e-book publication quality for thoroughly 20th century W.W. Norton Co., ★★☆☆☆ - what in the world were they thinking?

Who Needs Another History of the Founding?

That was my first thought. But from the very first page of the Introduction--which by itself every American high-school student should read as an indispensable civics text--I was hooked. The prose is eloquent; the mini-biographies of these extraordinary men(some of them less well than they should be) are insightful, absorbing, sometimes scandalous and often surprising; and the group portrait that they form, greater than the sum of its parts, adds up to a panorama of the creation of the United States that is endlessly thought provoking and hard to put down. The account of the Founders Houses is an enjoyable and illuminating bonus. An even greater bonus is the book's searching account of the Founding Fathers' profound ideas about liberty, limited government, and republican virtue. George M. Yeager

DON'T PASS UP THIS BOOK AND REVIEW

Myron Magnet has written a most delightfully surprising and revealing book through his unique format of a brief trenchant biographical sketch of each founder and a splendid reasonably detailed description of the architecture,vision and personal pursuits of each of them in relation to their beloved homes and occupations.
This is a book for any experienced or general reader interested in early American history that includes the founding generation. Through Magnet's beautiful descriptive prose each chapter brings alive each character and his sense of place and self worth.
Just the introduction alone is worth the price of this book - here we are introduced in a cogent manner to the primary cause of rebellion: political liberty with economic and social liberties deriving their just causes from the former.
Another surprise was the wonderful revelation of the early apt and artful radical writings of William Livingston in Chapter 1, Conceived in Liberty: William Livingston and the Case for Revolution. This book has a number of little known facts of each of the covered founders by virtue of the author's careful persistent and perspicacious research and applied diligent reason.
I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND ADDING , the popular book, "Houses of the Founding Fathers:The Men Who Made America and the Way They Lived" by Hugh Howard, Roger Strauss III,as an companion reading after each chapter for further personal and visual history that can add immense depth and pleasure for the reader. As a further delightful extension consider "Founders As Fathers: The Private Lives And Politics Of The American Revolutionaries" by Lorri Glover that depicts several of the most prominent Virginian American Revolutionary Patriots.
