As a PMP instructor, this one of the prep books I recommend

As a project management instructor and course developer at a state university, a project management keynote speaker, and someone who has been training project managers for nearly two decades, I highly recommend this book. I have also helped hundreds to pass their PMP exams (including training PMI employees), I believe that this prep book and the A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge: PMBOK(R) Guide is what you need at a minimum to pass the latest PMP exam. For those of you who are excellent independent learners, these two resources may be all you need.

For this review, I'll compare this with the ever-popular Rita Mulcahy's PMP Exam Prep, Eighth Edition: Rita's Course in a Book for Passing the PMP Exam, which I also believe is an excellent choice. Both follow the chapters of the PMBOK and are very well written.

CONTENT
Tie - When it comes to being concise, Mulcahy does a great job of keeping it simple and to-the-point. If I'm judging on depth, Phillips provides a bit more. Both books have up-to-date info, just presented differently.

STYLE
Mulcahy - This is a personal preference but I like the in-your-face tone in Mulcahy's books. Sometimes sarcastic, sometimes military-like motivational, always entertaining.

REINFORCEMENT
Mulcahy - Both books do a good job of providing relevant examples but Mulcahy's workbook-like exercises are simply awesome.

SELF-ASSESSMENT
Tie - Both Phillips and Mulcahy have in-chapter or end-of-chapter reinforcement questions. Mulcahy's are slightly easier so make sure you score higher if you taking those.

PRACTICE EXAMS
Phillips - Phillips comes with full practice exams while sadly, although Mulcahy has questions spread throughout each chapter, it does not come with practice exams. However, they can be purchased separately.

VALUE
Phillips - Although I believe Mulcahy has a slight edge overall, it also costs three times more than Phillips. For a measly $30, Phillips gives you an excellent prep book with more than adequate exercises. This gives you the biggest bang for the buck.

OVERALL
Both books are more than adequate as long as you also have the PMBOK. It all depends on your budget and your preference of style. You can't go wrong either way.

excellent pmp exam primer

This excellent PMP exam prep study guide is chock full of useful information and tips for taking AND PASSING the PMP certification exam. It is well organized, contains good quizzes at the end of each chapter, a CD that you can download which includes the entire text for study plus a 200 question practice exam. In addition, you get online access to a second 200 question practice exam. The book is written in Joe's light and breezy style, which sure beats slogging through the PMBOK Guide. The appendix on Critical Exam Information will be tremendously helpful to anyone pursuing certification.

What a difference!

Instead of slogging through the PMBOK which turned out to be unhelpful and unproductive for passing the exam, I found this study guide and CD to be concise, relevant, accessible, and very helpful.

It covers the Fifth Edition PMBOK material you now need to pass the PMP exam.

I read the entire book and did all the chapter quizzes and practice exams and followed all the good advice. Especially useful was the suggestion to make and memorize essential information then writing it down on the paper provided in the exam.

It really helped me relax, do my best, and pass the exam - which I did!

You can't win if you don't play

Although I feel a bit as though this book states the obvious and does so repetitively, I still rank it as above average. That's because I think a little sobriety and common sense can go a long way in today's investment world, and this book has a lot of potential to be helpful to investors just starting out or who still have a long timeline before retirement. The title suggests that the author is going to give readers a guide for how to "beat" the market, but indeed, that is the anti-thesis of this book. In fact, the author admits that investing is a loser's game and there is no way to beat the market. His strategy is simply, you can't beat `em, so you should join `em. And how should you do that? With index funds. The plain white toast of the investment world is this book's simple strategy for winning the loser's game, and the author trots out lots of heavyweight facts and figures in chapter after chapter, with the bottom line of: you could have done this, and it might have made you rich, or it might not have, but if you had indexed, you'd be doing okay.

Nothing new, nothing exciting, but easy enough to implement and compelling enough to want to. In the world of investing, the new offense may well be a sound defense, and this book will certainly convince most intelligent investors of that fact. I've been indexing for years and I know I'm better off than most investors in my age group. At the very least, I haven't stayed up at night regretting or fretting about investment decisions, and I don't worry (yet) about running out of money, so I can't argue with the author's premise. This book is well written, well organized, well thought out, and I'll say it again, compelling. Some readers may balk at a whole book about an idea as simple as "buy index funds", but maybe that's what it takes to convince you. And while it's true that you can't lose the game if you don't play, you can't win either, and in the end, it's better to have a safe if somewhat slow strategy than no strategy at all.

I recommend this book to anyone who invests in their future. It can't hurt you as an investor, and it might help make you a better (if slightly stodgy) one.

Best Investment Book I've read

Mr. Ellis' credentials were what brought me to buying this book. But his logic and math were what convinced me about indexing. There have been many articles in the WSJ and Fortune recently about big money managers saying indexing is the best way to invest in the market. After reading this book, i understand why. I changed all my accounts to low cost index funds when i was done and won't look at them again for years.

Excellent guidance

This book is easy to read and understand and contains excellent, basic investment guidance. I suggest that people in their 20's and 30's should read and implement the investing practices contained in this book.

About the Author
Anne Edwards is the author of several bestselling biographies of notable figures, including film stars Judy Garland and Katharine Hepburn, as well as Queen Mary and Gone with the Wind novelist Margaret Mitchell. A fastidious researcher and accomplished writer, Edwards received a Pulitzer prize nomination for her book Early Reagan: The Rise of an American Hero. Her memoir, Leaving Home (2012) is available from Scarecrow Press. She lives in Beverly Hills, California.

Tragic decline of a star...

The sad life of a remarkably beautiful and talented woman.

Vivien Leigh always wanted to be an actress, but it was the stage that was her natural element, not motion pictures, which served merely as a way to earn a living. Gone With The Wind was the exception -- that was the role everyone wanted. And for the rest of her life she remained Scarlett O'Hara to the entire world.

This account leaves me with the impression that her love for Laurence Olivier, already married to another woman, began as an obsession in the strictest sense of the word and remained an unhealthy need until the day she died. His world-wide prestige as a stage actor, as a titan of the theater, remained always a goal she could not equal but yearned for; possibly it seemed the only way to be worthy of a place by the side of this heroic figure. He was in truth her entire existence.

Surprisingly, the major flaw Vivien Leigh had to contend with was her voice, which was too light and high-pitched to be ideal for the theater. Nevertheless with her beauty and passion and with his enormous prestige as an actor and director, this husband and wife became for decades the reigning theatrical couple in Europe as well as the United States and as far away as Australia.

Whenever they performed in motion pictures, together or separately, it was merely as a means of supporting their extravagant lifestyle and providing for the children from their first marriages, his son and her daughter. Vivien was never a doting mother, nor Olivier a doting father, and both children remained essentially strangers to them while they pursued their acting careers all over the world.

The war years were spent in Hollywood making propaganda films for England though they were not announced as such. At the end of the war they returned to a devastated and impoverished country and continued their careers enduring all the hardships of theater life at that time. But nothing warned them of the horrors soon to be visited upon them with the onset of Vivien's schizophrenia.

It tormented them for the rest of their lives together. The alternation of hope during her quieter, depressive periods and of horror, violence, and despair during the manic episodes inexorably wore on Olivier's patience and endurance. In the end he gratefully turned her care over to another man whose disinterested devotion would have qualified anyone for sainthood. Eventually a divorce freed Olivier to marry again.

Adding to her misery, Vivien suffered for years from tuberculosis and it was this that culminated in her death while she was still in her early fifties.

This biography provides an easy-to-read, straightforward account of her remarkable but doomed life with a man of immense fame and distinction.

In his treatment of his afflicted wife Olivier does not appear to have been unkind and in the end he dragged himself from his sickbed to sit beside her body until she was removed for cremation.

A sad ending to a life of so much brilliance.

Excellent biography of one of the greatest film and stage actresses who ever lived.

Despite severe mental illness at a time when there was little effective treatment, Vivien Leigh, who battled remittances of tuberculosis as well, refused to capitulate. She continued on to achieve her best performances in the occupation she had been gifted with...even after her beloved Oliver abandoned her due to her bipolar disorder for a younger woman. Inspiring!

One of the first biographies of Leigh

Anne Edwards wrote the first "authorized" or at least approved of account of Vivien Leigh's life. Many people did not know of her mental illness until the publication of this book, and it still remains incredibly poignant and incredibly well-written.

Treating key rhetors, genres, settings, and movements from the early republic to the present, these essays collectively challenge and complicate many previous claims made about the stability and development of gendered public and private spheres, the decline of oratorical culture and the limits of women's oratorical forms such as elocution and parlor rhetorics, and women's responses to rhetorical constraints on their public speaking. Enriching our understanding of women's oratorical education and practice, this cutting-edge work makes an important contribution to scholarship in rhetoric and communication.

Given the interest and importance of future research in nitride semiconducting materials and solid state lighting applications, the contents are very timely. The book is composed of chapters written by leading researchers in III-nitride semiconducting materials and device technology. About the Author

Tae-Yeon Seong received his PhD from the University of Oxford. He is a Professor of Materials Science and Engineering and currently Chair of Department of Nanophotonics at Korea University. His research focuses on the area of wide band-gap materials and devices (emitters, detectors and electronics) using GaN and ZnO and developing these materials for illumination applications.  He has authored and coauthored more than 340 peer-reviewed journal papers and holds 130 patents. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Physics (UK) and SPIE, an Associate Editor of Semiconductor Science and Technology, and an Editorial Advisory Committee Member of the Electrochemical Society Journals.

Jung Han is a Professor and currently the Chair of Electrical Engineering Department at Yale University. Before joining Yale University in 2001, he was a senior member of technical staff at Sandia National Laboratories, where he established a wide bandgap III-nitride semiconductor research effort for visible and ultraviolet LEDs. His current research activities includes the visible InGaN light emitting structures for energy-efficient solid state lighting, nano-scale synthesis of AlGaInN heterostructures, and hybrid inorganic-organic flexible optoelectronics. He has authored and coauthored more than 200 papers in peer-reviewed journals and holds 7 US patents. He is a fellow of Institute of Physics, UK. The awards he received include MRS Ribbon Award (2005) and R&D 100 (2004).

Hiroshi Amano received D.Eng from Nagoya University. He is a Professor at Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Nagoya University. In 1985, he developed low-temperature deposited buffer layers which provided the technology vendors to the development of high-quality group III semiconductor based LEDs and LDs. In 1989, he succeeded in growing p-type GaN and fabricating p-n junction LEDs for the first time in the world. He has published more than 440 technical papers. The awards he received include: 1996 IEEE/LEOS Engineering Achievement Award, 1998 Japan Society for Applied Physics C Award, 1998 Rank Award, 2001 Marubun Academic Award, and 2002 Takeda Award.

Hadis Morkoç received Ph.D. from Cornell University, NY, and Honoris Causa from University of Montpellier II. He held positions at Varian Associates, Palo Alto, CA, University of IL at Urbana-Champaign, AT&T Bell Laboratories, Caltech and JPL, and Air Force Research Laboratories. He is with School of Engineering at VCU, Richmond VA. He is among the most cited with over 1600 publications. He is a Fellow of AAAS, APS and IEEE, and member of Sigma Xi (Life member), Eta Kappa Nu, Phi Kappa Phi (Life member), Sigma Pi Sigma, Tau, Beta Pi, and International Men of Achievement, and ISI highly cited authors.
