As a teacher educator and former early childhood teacher, this book makes me exclaim, "Finally!" Why? A preservice teacher recently confronted me with the query, "We are always talking education for social justice But how do you actually *do* it?" Souto-Manning's book fills that gap by providing insights into how to *do* multicultural education in this field. While not a "how-to" guide, it presents a "critical and situated" (p.8) sampling of approaches, each of which "problematize dominant views of learning" (p. 8). This book brings scholarly, original, well-written and highly readable ideas- grounded in current theories of critical multicultural education- as well as important classroom strategies, that early childhood teachers can take to their classrooms. *Multicultural teaching in the early childhood classroom* provides teachers of young children with authentic strategies to "lift the moment[s]" when inequity or unfairness arises in our classrooms rather than shutting students down with our adult logic. It is a must read for teachers, teacher educators, and students alike!

Articulate, practical and written by an outstanding scholar in the field

Souto-Manning clearly has been a practitioner as well as an academic. This book is a reminder that teachers of young children can effectively provide developmentally appropriate activities that foster multicultural understandings. The wide ranging teaching strategies are creative and transformative, providing routes to meaningfully engaging even our littlest learners. I highly recommend this book.
