So plausible it's frightening--a thrilling, thought-provoking read

Jessica Khoury describes her sophomore novel Vitro as an "adrenaline rush on an island," and for the most part, I heartily agree.

I pre-ordered Vitro and I was not disappointed about my decision after finishing :). This novel is brilliant. Plus, it's a companion novel set in the same world as Origin, which means that readers who are new to Khoury's work can read Origin and/or Vitro in any order they want without worrying about missing anything. Some companion novels aren't really like that--like Kristin Cashore's Fire, for example. While I enjoyed Fire (my favorite of the Graceling series), I felt that I would've missed the richness of the world if I hadn't read Graceling first. This wasn't the case with Vitro. (I did, however, find the not-so-subtle references to the events in Origin that come later in Vitro hilarious. But honestly...that's probably just because I'm weird.)

Of course, like most novels, I wasn't enthused about everything. But if you're looking for a solid, thought-provoking read flavored with humor and pulsing with the thrill of sci-fi-induced terror, Vitro is a novel you don't want to miss.

*So, why don't you want to miss this novel?*

_Because The Prose._ (Was fantastic.) There are great books out there that come just shy of being extraordinary to me for one reason: the prose is mediocre. Reading Jessica Khoury's prose is a lot like taking a nice hot shower after working 8 hours in the grueling sun--it's gripping, lush, refreshing, dynamic. I lived on Skin Island with the characters as I read Vitro. Khoury is a master at weaving a multitude of "aerodynamic" concrete details into her settings to bring them alive. I say aerodynamic because her prose never drags. Few authors I've read can boast of having such skill.

_Because of LUX._ I love love loved (now that I'm reading it instead of hearing it in my mind it looks weird, but whatever) everything about this character--her personality, her existential struggles, her courage, her stubbornness. The chapters from Lux's POV were stunning, and once again demonstrated Khoury's finesse as an author.

_The science._ Was Origin believable? Sure--but it still had twinges of the fantastical. To me, immortality seems distant, out of reach for humanity despite all the research and attempts to find it. Vitro, however, feels terrifyingly close to actually happening. Like 20 years from now kind of happening. (Maybe sooner.) In other words, the issues and events presented in Vitro are frighteningly plausible.

The technology behind the scientific advancements in Vitro already exists. Think about that for a moment. *It already exists!* Khoury simply projects what could happen if a particular company decided to develop the technology...and if something went "wrong." I can't say much else because I'll give parts away, but I will say this: Vitro embodies the moral quandaries of this age in spine-chilling form.

_Vitro is a gem of a novel with few things I could reasonably 'critique'._ The one rather nebulous thing I didn't like: it felt like it was missing something. (As you can see, my specificity is unparalleled.) A subtle something, admittedly, but an important something. Sadly, I have no idea what that something is. If you read Vitro and feel the same way, let me know--maybe we can figure it out together :).

Other than that, I loved the characters, the structure of the novel, the setting, the plot....

Overall, I highly recommend Vitro (though I liked Origin more...thought it had more tension, especially in the action sequences, and that it presented more [numerically] provocative themes. Also, I really enjoyed the fantastical side)!

Fast-paced, quick action packed read for Science Fiction lovers

When I originally requested this book from Penguin I did not realize it was a companion novel. I then flipped out for a minute because I thought I had to read ORIGIN beforehand...well to those wondering YOU DON'T. :-) I was able to follow along in this book just fine without even knowing what ORIGIN was about.

I'm going to make this review somewhat shorter than my usual because I found this book really hard to put into words overall. I'm also skipping a recap since the synopsis is above and I don't want you all feeling you are reading for days with all the other words. ;-)

I enjoyed reading this book and thought it was a very good sci-fi. There was a good amount of action and suspense, and some slight romance thrown in there too. The writing was well written and made it a very quick read. The setting of Skin Island was very vividly described. I felt like I could see the island through the characters eyes, and could feel the darkness and fear from the unknown. The setting and way it was described was easily my favorite part and quickly drew me in.

Characters were not the strong suit for this book, but it did not keep me from enjoying it. The book switches point of views between Sophie, Lux, and Jim in third person. I always enjoy switching point of views because I get to see everything going on and not just something in one place. Since the three were on different parts of the island or handling different aspects it was nice seeing what all was going on at all times. I just wished we had had a little more time with Jim and Sophie to become more familiar with them before all the action started, without that it was too easy to be detached from them while reading.

With that being said, my favorite character point of view was Lux. It was mainly because I never really knew what she would do or say so it gave me some angst. Sophie was my next okay; I liked seeing her outlook on the entire situation since it was so close to her emotionally. She was brave also so that made me like her even more. She was however a little naive to some situations and I wanted to reach in and shake her several times. Jim was my least favorite character. I never could connect with him through the entire book. I just felt no real emotions from him or anything to make me connect. I felt he used the same "tone" through the entire book and those chapters made me want to step back from the book a few times. Thankfully Lux and Sophie's chapters were much longer and took over most of the book as a whole.

The plot flowed easily and while I could see a lot of the twists coming I still enjoyed seeing everything happen. I hated some of the things that happened but I find that to be a good thing because that means I was emotionally wrapped in the book. I found myself really disturbed by things that happened on Skin Island with the Vitros. The science lab and Vitros were really interesting in the scientific aspect of things. While not all questions were answered or tied up for you in a pretty little bow, I still felt it was a solid plot and gave me all the answers I NEEDed.

Overall I would recommend this book to fans of ORIGIN and a quick-paced science fiction read. I think there will be many readers that completely love this book! This is one book I think I would enjoy better as an audiobook. Simply because I feel like the narration would possibly make it feel like there is more emotion when it lacks emotion from characters in scenes. I'm considering getting the audio just to test this theory.

Things are not what they seem on Skin Island....

Sophie Crue lives with her father & stepmother and only gets to see her mother on rare occasions. Her mother is kept very busy working on an island off of Guam doing top-secret research regarding mental diseases. Since Sophie has never been allowed to set food on Skin Island, she’s not entirely sure what it is that her mother does, except for what she’s been told all her life. Until one day, when everything changes. She gets an urgent e-mail from her mother requesting her help with an emergency on the Island. Sophie immediately travels back to her hometown, enlists the help of her childhood friend, and heads to the mysterious Skin Island. Soon upon arriving, Sophie realizes things aren’t quite right and what she’s been led to believe all her life isn’t true in so many ways. Things are DEFINITELY not what they seem regarding Skin Island.

This book is filled with fast-paced adventure almost from the beginning. The majority of the book actually covers about a 48-hour time period, so there’s a lot of action and excitement along the way. Vitro raises some really great moral and ethical questions and it’s interesting to read about the different characters’ struggles and how they deal with these scenarios. This story is filled with courage, the value of human life, and what it means to truly care for somebody. Repeatedly, I felt like I figured out exactly what was going on, but then there was a new twist each time! This was a really fun, entertaining book to read while at the same time being a really great thought-provoking book regarding human life.

The dramatic increase in global trade confronts service firms with the challenge of adapting their services to the varying requirements of customers in different cultures. Jan H. Schumann focuses on three relationship marketing issues that are of relevance for both academics and practitioners: the establishment of trusting customer relationships, customer co-production, and the effect of word-of-mouth referrals. The results of the study, conducted on banking customers in 11 countries, show that differences in cultural values impact consumers’ behavior and cognitions. Overall, the findings from this doctoral study highlight the need for culture-specific relationship marketing in services that considers the values of specific target groups. The author outlines ways to cope with this challenge and derives implications for research and practice.

Dr. Jan H. Schumann obtained his doctorate with Prof. Dr. Florian v. Wangenheim at the Technische Universität München.

A real mixed bag

My husband and I read from a daily book every morning over breakfast, and this year -- avid amateur photographers that we are -- we chose this one in addition to one with more traditional 'thoughts for the day.'

It's a total mixed bag of little bios about various photographers, simplistic how-tos for various techniques, descriptions of different kinds of photography, photojournalism hints, historical photography factoids, inspirations, and usually a sample photograph illustrating the day's message. It's interesting and different from the usual meditative daily readers.

There are no dates, just numbers -- "Day 60." Little symbols at the top of each page tell you what category the day's messages fall into, not that it matters to us -- we enjoy the ritual and the informative reading.

It keeps us thinking of new ways to take photos or of looking at our world, and that's a good thing for a daily reader to do.

Love this little book. Whether you're a hobby photographer like me or a professional, you'll enjoy the quick little daily reads. There's a little wit, snippets of wisdom and insight. All together, just a very enjoyable book that you'll always have time for.

About the Author
Rudolf Steiner (1861–1925) was born in the small village of Kraljevec, Austro-Hungarian Empire (now in Croatia), where he grew up. As a young man, he lived in Weimar and Berlin, where he became a well-published scientific, literary, and philosophical scholar, known especially for his work with Goethe’s scientific writings. At the beginning of the twentieth century, he began to develop his early philosophical principles into an approach to systematic research into psychological and spiritual phenomena. Formally beginning his spiritual teaching career under the auspices of the Theosophical Society, Steiner came to use the term Anthroposophy (and spiritual science) for his philosophy, spiritual research, and findings. The influence of Steiner’s multifaceted genius has led to innovative and holistic approaches in medicine, various therapies, philosophy, religious renewal, Waldorf education, education for special needs, threefold economics, biodynamic agriculture, Goethean science, architecture, and the arts of drama, speech, and eurythmy. In 1924, Rudolf Steiner founded the General Anthroposophical Society, which today has branches throughout the world. He died in Dornach, Switzerland.

Dive in and see the connection in it all....

Candia's story is compelling and comes straight from her heart. In her engaging style, she speaks of her own journey to heal herself of environmental illness. She also helps us reflect more on the various ways that we are affected (physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually) by our environments. I enjoyed her seeds of wisdo throughout the book that propels us to reflect on our authentic needs as whole people.

This story awakens the heart to see how a shy girl grew to become an inspiring and empowered feminine leader in the end.This book is a wonderful example of how we are asked to evolve and grow whether we feel ready or not for the challenges life presents us with.

Ms. Cole asks us to dive into our hearts and see the earth and our experiences with ourselves, one another and all living things as connected.

theorists to an English-speaking audience. He shows how thinkers in France and in English-speaking
countries have produced different strains of ecological thought and suggests that the work of French
ecological theorists could lessen pervasive tensions in Anglophone ecology.Much of the theory
written in English is shaped by the debate between anthropocentric ecologists, who contend that the
value of our nonhuman surroundings derives from their role in fulfilling human interests, and
ecocentric ecologists, who contend that the nonhuman world holds ultimate value in and of itself.
This debate is almost nonexistent among French theorists, who tend to focus on the processes linking
nature and human identity. Whiteside suggests that the insights of French theorists could help
English-language theorists to extricate themselves from endless debates over the real center of
nature's value.Among the French theorists discussed are Denis de Rougemont, Denis Duclos, René
Dumont, Luc Ferry, André Gorz, Félix Guattari, Bruno Latour, Alain Lipietz, Edgar Morin, Serge

Divided Natures Attributes (it's DNA) deserves your Undivided Attention

There is not question that this work is a serious contribution to contemporary ecological consciousness and the history of ideas and ideals. It is an elegantly balanced review of an entire body of thinking and thought that is not settled by simple labels, themes, membership and brand name communities of agreement in the crisis of global environmental movements. Every "Green" should buy this book if only to re-evaluate their own station in the all too "institutionalized" rhetoric of rationalizing counter-culture ecology as the cure all and end all of global destruction. As a cultural ecologist and researcher I found this work to be a extremely valuable research tool and review of literature that is bound to inspire thought and evoke new emergent levels of authentic independent insights to the crisis that is polarizing interests even as the politicizing economic incentives continue to degrade and destroy ecological systems in the name of progress and "sustainability" or "resistance" that have tailored and pacified the otherwise aggressive and assertive voices of reason. It is unfortunate that the previous review has slanted the ratings of this book. I encourage you to engage this book personally.
It would be interesting to see a line of serious comments that comprehensively reflects that engagement to follow. The serious intent and research provided by Kerry H. Whiteside deserves an intelligent evaluation based on thought not feelings.

In the interest of expedience, this is my reply to that previous review (posted to the comment page). Judge for yourself:
Is the PhD you list to your name the clarification of your authority to quote Whitehead's comment, or is it to lend credibility to an otherwise empty review? I'm confused by your own obscure references to Bertand Russell's lecture at Harvard, Quantum theory and your own comment that Kerry Whiteside's ecological research is simply a "natural world" inside his head...while your own admission is that this particular statement does not reside in your actual mind but from an apparently unsubstantiated emotive "feeling" that strikes you as critical assessment. I appreciated your recital of the quote (very cute contradiction in terms) but apparently your own contradictions outweigh your credibility to rate this work. IT is unfortunate that you would slam a book so casually. When I finally received my copy I was struck by its academic and intellectual integrity; and the fact perhaps that it is a wealth of authentic research in the history of ideas that are actually decisively and critically still dynamically in play today.

No less obscure

"Divided Natures: French Contributions to Political Ecology" covers a broad range of Gaulic political ecophilosophy over the past half century. While an interesting summary and exposition, the author, Kerry Whiteside, does little to hold the attention of the reader for any of several reasons.

I was particularly struck by the feeling that Whiteside has spent very little time exploring aspects of the natural world outside of his head. And therein lies the problem with his conclusions. It's like Alfred North Whitehead's comment of his friend, Bertrand Russell's first Harvard lecture on the Quantum Theory: "I'd like to thank Professor Russell for his brilliant exposition. And especially for leaving unobsecured the vast darkness of the subject."
