not the best book,,, just the best i found so far

the fact that the book is in black and white is a real problem.. it is hard to follow the tutorials that tell you to click on a particular point and you can't quite tell what point they are talking about. Tutorials themselves (if you can get past the B&W problem) are good -- at least until around lesson 16 and 17 where it seems like the author or editor got in a hurry and started missing steps.. at least thats what it seems to me since I couldnt get thru those particular tutorials. But, that said, this book has been a better introduction to me to Max than the Bible series which really threw me some loops. Overall, it just seems that Max doesnt have very many good learning books.

Not the complete printed book

I ordered this book because it is the Official Training Guide for 3ds Max Design 2010 and it's basically required reading if testing for the Associate or Professional certifications. Unfortunately, the physical/printed book only includes the first 4 chapters of material (Chapter 1 - Getting Started, Chapter 2 - Modeling, Chapter 3 - Lighting and Chapter 4 - Materials). Looking at the 3ds Max Exam Sections and Objectives online, I saw that there was a second part of Chapter 4 (Maps) and also a Chapter 5 - Rendering and a Chapter 6 - Animation that seemed to be missing.
After a little bit of digging, I found that these additional chapters are included on a DVD in the back of the book in PDF format along with the training files. However, if you're like any normal person and want to read these additional chapters somewhere other than in front of a computer, you will want to print these additional chapters out. I brought the DVD to Kinko's and spent an additional $30 to have the chapters printed out and and spiral bound so that I could tab out the lessons and highlight the important ideas with a marker while studying at the library/cafe/etc.
I don't understand the logic in Autodesk not printing and including these additional chapters in the book itself and am pretty disappointed in their decision. The price of the book on Amazon was about $35 but I would have gladly paid $65+ to have the complete book printed in one volume.

Good Book but it does need color

this book is great for beginners like me and it touches on all the fundementals of a very complex program(and I thought Flash CS4 was complex to learn). My only real displeasure with this book is that it does not have color in the pages so when there is a part of the image that is highlighted, you cant see it or distinguish it against other elements surrounding it. This does make it very confusing at times, but never the less you catch on to the main focus of the lesson. I tried to look for other books on the basics of 3Ds Max but this was the better of them all.
