On Aristotle's Politics

This slim volume includes a very short introduction on Greek history, politics, and philosophy, followed by a reproduced chapter from Ryan's "On Politics," and over 100 pages of material from Aristotle's "Nicomachean Ethics" and "Politics." The excerpts from Aristotle occupy more than half of the book. Ryan succeeds in tracing Aristotle's thinking to our time, and placing his ideas on slavery and the inferiority of women into ancient context. Where Aristotle's ideas conflict with later understandings of politics, Ryan fleshes out the differences and the philosophical consequences with care.
While this was a quick and enjoyable read, I would rather have tackled "On Politics" as a whole, rather than just sample it through this slender piece. I suspect that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.
