About the Author
Philippe Georget was born in 1963. In France, he resumed studies that lead to a degree in history and a master's degree in journalism in 1988. He first worked for Radio France and The Rough Guide before embarking on regional television side of Orleans. He has worked as a journalist editor, cameraman and presenter. For his first novel "Summertime All The Cats Are Bored" he received the First Novel Award 2011 and The Mystery of the Polar Price SNCF 2011.

If cats could read this book, they wouldn't be bored

As summer draws to a close, I wanted to read a summer mystery. And what's more summery than a story set in the south of France? In this case, we're in an unusual location for crime fiction: Perpignan, way down in France's Mediterranean south, almost to Spain.

It's another warm July in Perpignan, and police inspector Gilles Sebag is adjusting to changes at home. His teenage daughter and son are both away for the month, and he and his beautiful wife, Clare, are getting a taste of what it will soon be like to be full-time empty nesters. Gilles is looking forward to spending more time alone with Clare, whom he adores even more than when they fell in love at university, but he wonders if she feels the same. Is she lying to him about where she goes when he's busy at work in the evenings? Could she even be having an affair?

At work, Gilles seems to be such an astute and well-respected detective that we wonder why he's not higher-ranked. That's quickly explained. When his second child was born, Gilles took advantage of France's then-new parental-leave law and spent three years working part-time. Nothing was ever said to his face, but it was clear that this didn't go over well in the macho police world. Gilles never received any further advancement. That was alright with him, though. He just wanted to be left alone and allowed to do his job.

Now, two new cases land in Gilles's lap. A Catalan taxi driver, José Lopez, has been reported missing by his wife, and the force also receives a report of a missing young woman--a Dutch tourist named Ingrid. Are the two disappearances connected? And what of the enterprising journalist who livens up the summer torpor with a sensational story that the missing Ingrid is part of a series of attacks on beautiful young Dutch female tourists?

Author Philippe Georget is former TV news anchorman who now lives with his family in Perpignan. This is his debut novel and is a welcome introduction to an appealing new protagonist. Gilles is a thoughtful, intelligent, sensitive guy. Someone you'd like to get to know. His character and devotion to his family make a refreshing change from the usual angst-ridden misfit model (though I enjoy a few of those as well). But that's not to say that Gilles is some conventional Father Knows Best type. We know right away that he's different when we read that he bucked the cultural norm by being a half-time stay-at-home dad. Also, his musings on marriage and his children are very different from what you might expect, and made me hope to learn more about Gilles and Clare in future books.

The Perpignan setting was a bonus. I was somewhat familiar with the city from reading World War II history, because it was so often a meeting place from which refugees and downed Allied pilots escaped France with the aid of guides, who took them off by boat or over the Pyrenees to Spain. Perpignan's World War II history plays no part in this book, though. But we do get a real feel for the summer heat, the beauty of the Rousillon region and the Catalan flavor that mixes with the French. The owner of Gilles's favorite coffee shop is Catalan and Gilles works on his Catalan by conversing with him. I enjoyed learning a little about the dialect this way.

Although this book is part of the publisher's World Noir collection, and the cover blurb calls it French noir, I wouldn't call it noir at all. There are at least a dozen definitions of noir, it's true, but the general consensus is that noir is cynical, fatalistic, with a protagonist who is no hero. In noir, the atmosphere of moral ambiguity is usually thick as a London fog. This book does have a cynical tone at times, and there's a slight mist of moral ambiguity about marriage, but otherwise the story doesn't tick any of the rest of the noir boxes. Gilles is a good guy with a clear agenda to rescue the girl and get the bad guys. I'll confess that I'm not much of a fan of noir, so the fact that this isn't actually noir was a plus for me. But I think even noir fans can still enjoy this book, as long as they don't have expectations that it will fall into that genre.

Oh, finally, about that title. If you read the book, maybe you can tell me what it has to do with the story!

An outstanding mystery

Can't imagine why some reviewers were so negative. As an ardent mystery reader, I found this one to be the best I've read in 2013. It's well written, with intriguing plot twists that held my attention from start to finish. An added bonus is the southern French setting and the author's vivid descriptions of the local scenery.
I loved this book, couldn't put it down, and was sad to have finished it.

This Cat wasn't Bored

This is a police procedural and a well-written one that kept me reading late into the night. The laid back atmosphere disguises a deceptively complex narrative. The investigation is well thought through and develops at a very natural pace, but it is the characterizations that make this such an enjoyable read.

I think some of the negative reviews are from readers who are more accustomed to the North American style of mystery writing as opposed to European/French writing and as such they miss the nuances, particularly in the dialogues. I also feel the main subplot was very much resolved.

Adds little to the discussion

David Laibman's "Deep History" is yet another discussion of historical materialist principles, the nature of socialism, the Soviet experience etc. etc. from a modern Marxist perspective. I am not certain what made Laibman think that we needed another one of these.

Laibman starts out with inventing a series of acronyms for often-used phrases in discussions about historical materialism, so that productive forces becomes "PFs", production relations "PRs", modes of production "MPs", and so forth. To me, this is after a while vastly more annoying than just repeating those phrases, so I don't see the advantage. In any case this serves the purpose for Laibman of making easier to read models of the basic theses of historical materialism, which he discusses reasonably well, including a rather summary discussion of culture and symbolism. This then segues into an overview of the transition from feudalism to capitalism, also something that by now has been done many many times.

The middle part of the book concerns itself with capitalism as such. Laibman makes the point that given productive forces can be embedded in various relations of production, from laissez-faire to heavy interventionism, and that it is hard to form a useful 'abstract' theory of capitalism. This is accompanied by, alas, an explanation of the Marxist theory of capital and accumulation - again wholly superfluous. There is also a chapter on stages theory with regard to capitalism itself, a mildly useful overview of the debate on this subject, but rather short.

The main interesting part of this book is the end part, where Laibman goes into socialism and its political economy. He engages several criticisms of traditional socialist plan models, mainly the Hayekian and the Pareconian. His points about Parecon are well-made, and also should satisfy Michael Albert's complaints that no-one is willing to argue against it publicly. The chapter on the Soviet experience discusses a neo-Stalinist history of the USSR by Keeran & Kenny, as well as a 'market socialist' view of Erwin Marquit, which is of some interest since none of these authors are well-known. Laibman also posits what he calls the "Cherry Esplanade Conjecture", which entails that it is possible that moving towards socialism causes inefficiencies and lower productivity at first, but over time, as the whole of society is 'socialized', this situation may reverse and efficiency and productivity may be superior. An interesting, almost Koestlerian thesis, and it leads to his advice to Cuba and similar countries to "hang in there". It would be interesting to see if Laibman is going to make more of this Conjecture in future works, as it might be promising as an avenue of research.

Overall though, this book is pretty poorly done. The vast majority of the content contains absolutely nothing new to people informed about the mainstream socialist theoretical discussions, while the complete concentration on Marxist theory and the high degree of jargon use in the book also precludes it from being useful as introduction, which is why the redundancy is so annoying. Laibman's own innovations, such as the acronyms, only add to the confusion, and many of the chapters are little more than literature review. The book is also overall rather confused and meandering - the precise point is not clear at all, and "social evolution" really plays no role in the discussion at all, despite the title.
What can be said in its favor is that the bibliography is quite extensive and useful as reference for people interested in reading more about Marxist theory; maybe this book can serve some use as an undergrad college textbook. But for most purposes it adds nothing new.

Starting with “A is for alphabet”—to set the stage—and finishing with “Z is for zany . . . because it was that kind of day,” the familiar fairy tale is strung along from letter to letter. The format works reasonably well. Maccarone is able to fit the story within the parameters of an alphabet book without including too many connections that feel like placeholders (one such placeholder: “I is for inside, where Goldilocks goes”) until she reaches a more suitable letter. The cartoonlike illustrations have the appearance of animation stills and reinforce the text, telling the story from the point of view of the bears, who are more bemused than angry. While this book neither revolutionizes the alphabet book nor turns the fairy tale on its head, it straddles the two genres with enough success that it should appeal to fans of both. Preschool-Grade 1. --Kara Dean

This is a cute alphabet book telling the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears.

This is a cute alphabet book telling the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. The letters are woven in so well it almost seems as the original story were meant to be highlighted by letter. The illustrations are bright, fun and funny while Goldilocks appears a little odd to me as her hair is bigger than she is and her skin is definitely darker than any golden blonde I've ever seen but all in all it's vibrant and interesting to look at. This is a neat way to work on a fairy tale and the alphabet for early learners.

One of the funniest parts was the recurring character of Mrs. White, she runs the B & B, starts telling the Vampires and Witches whose head goes with which body.... You'll love finding out for yourselves how this whole Witches, Vampires against Zombies and a Demon came about in a clash of good vs. not so good.
They're better read in order because where one leaves off the next picks right up. Or soon after.
The writing, characters and dialogue make this another of Anita's worth reading more than once series'.
Its for any and every one that likes a good read!

I have a copy of this book and purchased the one from Amazon.com and sent it to a friend. The book is excellent! I was born and raised in the Noe Valley and it's so nice to have the book for history and photos of the places I remember while growing up. Also, I the author Bill Yenne and he has been doing a wide variety of books for years. I would say any native of San Francisco would enjoy this book.

Beautifully Written

It seems unfair to give this book such a low rating due to a lack of illustrations. If you have any curiosity toward insects, I highly recommend this book. While some insect books come from more of an anatomical point of view (and yes, with many illustrations), this book takes you through an intimate and fascinating account of the lives of these amazing creatures, such as: the sacred beetle, praying mantis, psyches, locusts and more. The author will open up a whole other world to you with a gentle view toward insects and with vivid and illustrative language.

Personal tribute to Henri Fabre

Since I was a student in the late 1940s Henri Fabre has been one of my heroes. I have had his book of collected observations on the intimate lives of insects since that time. The book was so over used that it badly needed replacing,and I was very pleased to see that it is still in print. It was my pleasure, in 1983, to visit Fabre's House and property in Provence, now a small museum. The museum retains atmosphere of a private place - I and my wife were the only visitors at the time; his desk, microscope and the big black hat remain in the room where he did many of his observations; as do, in a large glass case, the very large collection of natural objects (unrelated to insects) that he amassed in the course of his long life. In a lower floor are exhibited the many letters he received from admiring scientists, including Darwin.

A Classic.

How could anybody dislike such a charming old book? It has no need for illustrations, the intimate portraits of wonderful and industrious insects are rendered in delightful 19th century prose, by naturalist who clearly knew his subject very well indeed. Very readable and very likeable.
