PreSchool-K—A rabbit and a pig decide they want to trade places with one another, so they use art supplies and other items at hand to transform themselves accordingly. The layout and text will help audiences keep track of who's who as the changes occur. The rabbit is always on the left side of the spread, and the pig, on the right. Each character also speaks in a distinctive typeface. These design elements underscore the story's theme that differences are what make us unique and special. Children will identify with the animals' playful, imaginative antics. For example, the rabbit covers the tips of its long ears with socks so she will resemble the pig. Meanwhile, the pig puts a pair of tights on its head so it can have long, floppy ears. Fans of dress up and creative play, especially, will relate to the story. Moreover, the mixed-media artwork evokes children's drawings and paintings. Black lines around the figures resemble crayon strokes. Broad brushstrokes also recall the vigorous efforts of young artists. Text and illustrations effectively collaborate to create a cozy, cheerful book. Geneviève Côté is a Montreal artist whose illustrations have graced the pages of publications such as the New York Times and the Boston Globe. Her books have received three nominations for the Governor General's Award for Illustration, one of which went on to win, and she has also won the the Elisabeth Mrazik-Cleaver Award.

Beautifully illustrates lesson on individuality

I give this book five stars (on Amazon) not because it's darling and makes you say "Awwww!" (it does!) but because it demonstrates so beautifully something moms try to teach their kiddos - that they are unique and wonderful just as they are. The author dedicates this book to two little girls that wished to be twins and I couldn't help but think of my own daughters who *are* twins. This is just the sort of book I would have been pleased to read to them when they were younger because it encourages kiddos to discover who they are - whether or not the look like anybody else they know.

Delightful Book -- "Me and You" would make a nice gift

"You and Me" is a sweet little book that would make a very nice gift for expectant parents. The artwork by Genevieve Cote is in soft watercolor pastels and is very appealing. (Actually its mixed media, but it's the watercolor-y elements that caught my attention.)
The story is a good read-aloud and extols the merits of both friendship and being yourself. It uses two principle actors, Pig and Rabbit, and begins with them standing at easels, sort of gazing over at each other's canvases. Then Rabbit exclaims, "I wish I were just like you". To which Pig agrees, except that Pig wishes she/he were like Rabbit.
This sets the two off on a course of pretending and dressing like each other so that they begin to actually look like each other. Pig, for example, dons a pair of stockings that are pretend Rabbit ears. And Rabbit finds a large button in order to have a pig nose.
They go on changing their appearance until they realize that they aren't happy being someone else.
Talking Points :::
o "You and Me" is a delightful little book by award winning author Genevieve Cote. (This book was sponsored by the Conseil des arts et lettres du Quebec.)
o It's a good read-a-loud for younger children and unlike some other books for small fry it actually has a message or two.
o I particular liked the language that Ms. Cote used. The words are lyrical and the metaphors are richer than you find in many books in this category. For example, at one point Rabbit exclaims, "My tail would be as curly as a lemon twist." A fun image.
o Suitable for a gift.

Powerful Message in a sweet package!

All you have to do is look at the two little friends and you'll immediately fall in love with them. They are just too cute to resist! Charming, gentle illustrations and simple text send a big message about friendship and individuality! Rabbit and Pig like each other so much they try to be more like each other. They discover that they actually like each other better just the way they are! They learn that both of them are unique and special works of art. The simple story packs a powerful message!
I use this book when introducing journal writing, self portraits and portrait drawing of others.
