Getting Away with Murder: Benazir Bhutto's Assassination and the Politics of Pakistan, by Heraldo Muñoz

By the lead commissioner of the UN investigation, an authoritative account of Benazir Bhutto’s assassination.

On December 27, 2007, a suicide bomber killed Benazir Bhutto, the former prime minister of Pakistan. Brilliant and charismatic, the head of a political family as important to Pakistani history as the Gandhis in India or the Kennedys in the United States, Bhutto had recently returned from exile to challenge military dictator Pervez Musharraf in a democratic election. In the aftermath of the assassination, some blamed Musharraf; others blamed terrorists linked to the Pakistani security service, the ISI; still others pointed the finger at Bhutto’s own spouse and entourage; and some speculated that it was a lone wolf attack. Though the individuals behind the conspiracy have never been found, in Getting Away with Murder Heraldo Munoz goes further than anyone else to unravel the mystery of Bhutto’s death. Moreover, he explains the unexpected role America played in the tragic events, the byzantine relationship between Pakistan and the United States, and how Bhutto’s assassination impacted world politics. In a country ruled more often by military dictators than by elected governments, Bhutto offered a secular, democratic hope. Arguably one of Pakistan’s most iconic political figures, she became one of the world’s few female heads of government. Her assassination tore the country apart, destabilizing the entire region. Leading the United Nations’ inquiry, Munoz delved into murky world of Pakistani politics and the infamous Bhutto family, awash in charisma and power, controversy and violence. His year-long investigation frames a story of betrayals, corruption, foreign influence, and unsolved political assassinations.

Munoz provides new insight into Bhutto’s unprecedented rise and an unflinching, minute-by-minute narrative of the assassination itself. With impeccable research, Munoz also situates Bhutto in the decades-long history of U.S.-Pakistan relations and the emergence of global terrorism, pinpointing her death as the moment when those relations changed forever.

The result is a gripping narrative of Pakistan’s turbulent political realities and the death of its leading politician.

From Booklist
In 2007, in the midst of an electoral campaign, former Pakistani prime minister Bhutto, returning after her second exile, was assassinated by a suicide bomber. In 2009, Muñoz, former Chilean ambassador to the UN, was charged with investigating the assassination—a probe plagued by conspiracy theories, political machinations, and threats to the safety of the investigators. Muñoz offers historical perspective, including the contentious relationship between Pakistan and India and the way it contributed to tensions between Russia, China, and the U.S. over issues from nuclear armaments to Islamic fundamentalism. Bhutto, daughter of former prime minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, himself assassinated, was a moderate supported by the U.S. and Britain. Muñoz details her career, focusing on her last day of campaigning. He highlights questionable police actions after the assassination and concedes the unlikelihood of ever really knowing who killed Bhutto, as the list of enemies was long, from political rivals to the Pakistani Taliban. Though the UN’s final report could not identify the killers, it shone light on troubling actions of the government, intelligence services, and the military in a still tumultuous nation. --Vanessa Bush

Review
“This is a chilling account of deceit, corruption and murder at the highest levels of power in Pakistan, an American ally. A carefully researched and compelling tale of tragedy masked as a government.” (Tom Brokaw)

“Muñoz has written a brilliant, incisive and page turning book―the last word on Benazir Bhutto’s assassination. The murder of Benazir Bhutto shook a nation and the world but until now there has never been an authoritative explanation as to how and why she died. Muñoz comes closest to identifying those guilty of her untimely and tragic death, guiding us through the enigma and chaos that is Pakistan and the double dealing that sustains the tortured relationship between that country and the United States.” (Ahmed Rashid, author of Pakistan on the Brink: The Future of America, Pakistan, and Afghanistan)

“Like some of history’s other high-profile assassinations, including that of John F. Kennedy, the killing of Benazir Bhutto remains cloaked in rumor, speculation, and suspicion. Heraldo Muñoz and his colleagues found skeletons in many closets, smoking guns in many hands…The story of their search makes for a gripping read, but far more valuable are the insights Muñoz elicits about the nature of Pakistani society and its political culture.” (Zalmay Khalilzad, former U.S. ambassador to Afghanistan)

“One opens this book to learn more about what lay behind the tragic death of Benazir Bhutto and is immediately drawn into its context―the turbulence of Pakistan’s politics and international relations going back to the foundation of the state. The book is essential reading for all who want to understand more about the state of Pakistan and the fate of one of its most talented daughters.” (Helen Clark, administrator of UNDP and former prime minister of New Zealand)

Too Much But Not Enough
By Robert B. Lamm
Mr. (Ambassador?) Muñoz is a distinguished diplomat and I have absolutely no doubt that he is intelligent and sincere. However, this book is all over the place and sheds virtually no light on the assassination of Benazir Bhutto. He starts out by giving a quick summary of the assassination itself and its immediate aftermath; then he goes backwards in time and gives a brief history of the Pakistani political scene; he then goes back and gives a more robust history of Pakistan, including the assassinations of Bhutto's father and several others; then he dissects his UN-sponsored investigation of the assassination - noting several times that his mission was not to find the culprit. The last section of the book is an essay on the strange (and strained) relationship between the US and Pakistan.

While these sections are more or less interesting, the early ones are repetitive and the last one has nothing to do with what I thought the book would be about. Moreover, in most cases, the sections are too detailed to serve as the general overview he seems to seek to achieve, but not nearly detailed enough to give the full story. And the weakest section of the book is the one that discusses the investigation of the assassination, because it told me nothing that I didn't know before (aside from details that I'm not sure I needed to know). As a result, the book is choppy and inconclusive, and it's really not clear why he wrote it - or why he wrote it in this manner.

So, despite his intelligence and sincerity, the book is not what it's supposed to be about and not very good at what it is about, and not worth reading.

I learned a lot
By Dlk
This book taught me a lot about Pakistan's recent history and its political system. The author seems unbiased, without any brief from one faction or the other. The book presents a portrait of a very unstable and dangerous political environment, one where assassination is an all too common solution for political conflict.

An outstanding achievement.
By Muhammad A. Quddus
The book is a case study of how power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Everybody, in this corruption, is rotten to the core. A 'mutilated and mangled' Pakistan begins with corruption. Within five years of its birth, Pakistan had a murder in its hand. The very first prime minister is murdered. He is murdered in 1951 in exactly the same location where Ms. Bhutto was to be murdered in 2007. In 1951, there was no fanfare in the murder. No water truck was ordered to hose down the scene of the murder. And there was no quest to look for truth. What took place in 1951 took place again in 2007. The only difference was that the doctor who operated on Ms. Bhutto was not the same doctor. He was the son of the doctor. How do these people live? How do these people make their peace with themselves in the midst of lies and deceit? They say they pray to Allah. If their entire lives consist of lies, don't they lie in front their favorite deity: the Allah? Pakistan owes the writer Mr. Heraldo Munoz a standing ovation.
