Three, Imperfect Number, by Patrizia Rinaldi

The report that lands on Commissario Martusciello’s desk is unlike any other. The lifeless body of the Neapolitan singer Jerry Vialdi, a.k.a. Gennaro Mangiavento, has been found at the Naples football stadium; another corpse, this time a Jane Doe, has been discovered in the Bentegodi Stadium in Verona, hundreds of miles away. The bodies were left in a fetal position, there are no signs of physical violence, the method and the madness behind it appear to hide some unutterable secret. Conclusion: a daring challenge left by a psychopath for the police. who are stabbing in the dark with no idea where to begin. All except for superintendent Blanca Occhiuzzi: beautiful, blind from birth, forced by the dark that envelops her to perceive the world through only four senses, she feels the fear in people; she feels their guilt and their innocence. It is she who takes Martusciello by the hand, guiding him into the mind of a murderer with her sensual intuition. It is as if he were the blind one. Allusive, mysterious, rife with double-meanings, saturated with an exotic almost esoteric musicality, Patrizia Rinaldi’s radically new way of writing recounts a captivating story.

Review
Three, Imperfect Number is written in language that is sinuous, equivocal, full of allusions and double meanings, so that readers find themselves negotiating a narrative space that is as mysterious and unknown as the world surrounding Blanca.  A world where things are not seen but merely glimpsed, a world where the truth does not manifest itself in boldly lit block letters, but must be reached by scent, sound and touch alone. Three, Imperfect Number is a beautiful, unusual read that claims the reader's undivided attention. - shotsmag.co.uk/feature_view.aspx?FEATURE_ID=228

“The Rinaldi thrills us with a transgressive writing full of allusions and puns that make it intriguing” —The Daily Mirror

“There are books that can pull the reader into their world from the first pages; such is the case of Three, Imperfect Number” — La Gazzetta del Mezzogiorno

“Rinaldi takes the reader into the heart of Naples, one of the western suburbs dear to her, and into the heart of the characters that fill the scene of the novel.” —La Repubblica

“A Neapolitan writer, writing blood and full of surprises, a mystery, a Naples with strong color” — Donna Moderna

An Imperfect Number-A Perfect Crime
By propertius
This is a thinking man's mystery. It is not a "who done it," but a "why was it done." We have three murders, a popular singer, one of his fans and former paramour, and a night watchman. Dealing with these cases is a self-serving inspector Captain Malano who is convinced these murders were the work of a serial killer. More importantly are the three officers who disagree with him, Martusciello a tired jaded inspector, his partner Liguori with whom he constantly trades highly entertaining banter, and the ethereal, blind inspector Blanca Occhiuzzi, who herself is a fascinating creation.

The list of suspects is too numerous to mention but before anyone of them becomes tedious or too obviously guilty or innocent, they are rotated in a intriguing dance almost as if the author Patrizia Rinaldi is attempting to turn an imperfect number into a perfect one.

On the first reading of the book, I found the sections of the book that are few but disconcerting are the interior monologue
of the murderer, but I found on second reading they are intrinsic to the story. I am surprised that the publisher's description of the book mentions the atmosphere of Naples. I beg to differ because there is nothing to distinguish this book from being placed in Naples or some other seaside municipality.

That being the one fault, if that what is is, which I doubt it is, I recommend this mystery to any reader who wants to be surprised in a unique manner.

Not the usual police procedural
By litlover77
I enjoyed the author's voice, and I particularly liked the characters and their development. Each character has his or her own secrets, fears, and troubles, including the police. It is a very thought provoking and philosophical work.

Had Possibilities
By Virginia E. Johnson
In Naples, a famous singer is found murdered. Captain Malano calls it a serial killing and assigns the case to Captain Vincenzo Martusciello’s office. With Detective Arcengelo Liguari and Sergeant Blanca Occhiuzzi, they interview witnesses and act like policemen. Blanca is blind, and sees more through voices than her partners. Half way through the book a second murder is discovered with the same MO, proving the case to be a serial killer. But is it a false trail?

The characters were cardboard while the dialogue did not feel real, and the police investigation meaningless. One murder might have been a ritual killing, but I’m not sure it would constitute a serial killing until more than one was murdered.

The story had possibilities. Perhaps if better written with more believable characters and dialogue, it would hold readers’ interest. Liguari is a rich playboy, working as a detective for who knows what reason. He certainly doesn’t need a job or money. Blanca could have overshadowed her partners, but wasn’t used properly. Even the killer didn’t stand out as true. A shame.
