About the Author

Ronan McCrea, Lecturer in Law, University College London

Ronan McCrea was educated at Trinity College Dublin (LL.B.) and the London School of Economics (M.Sc., Ph.D.). He joined the School of Law at Reading University as a lecturer in 2009 from the chambers of Advocate General Poiares Maduro at the European Court of Justice where he worked as referendaire. He was called to the Bar of England and Wales in 2003 and completed pupillage at Matrix Chambers in London. He is also a former Legal Officer of the Refugee Legal Centre and a former voluntary associate counsel at the Brennan Center for Justice at NYU.

Hope and Promise for Uncertain lives

Have you ever read a book you wanted your friends to have already read so you could talk about it with them? This is one of those books. As teacher and teacher educator, I found in the lives of these children echoes of the lives of children and teachers I have taught. Robert Bullough's layered analysis gives entry into the worlds of these children without being titilating or depressing. His analysis articulates the issues of poverty, father absence, drug abuse that teachers deal with. In this way, he connects these stories,34 children's stories, to the larger issues confronting schools and society. More importantly I valued his respectful tone--his book communicates hope and respect for teachers, parents and most importantly these wonderful children whose lives are uncertain. His analysis helps each of us see ways we might make a difference in the uncertain lives of child in our own communities and shools.

Wonderfully touching

This book will truly tug at your heart. Bullough has crafted a very nice framework around several classrooms and the lives of the kids that make them up. The children have stories of physical abuse, growing up without one or both parents, surviving with little or nothing to eat, and living with and among drug users. Many of these kids have had to grow up to adulthood within the span of their eight to ten years of life. The situations that many of these kids have to live in would be enough to crush anyone's spirits. Yet many of them have soaring attitudes and the perseverance to see themselves through -- beacons of hope in the gloom.

Well-written, heart-rending and uplifting at the same time, and definitely worth reading.

Bizzaro entertaining beautifully illustrated some technique

Not a practical guide (despite the title). Learn! How to sleep without sleeping, the correct way to point your mustache, how often to have sex with your wife and when, and a little note here and there on which colors to use and how to draw.
The best thing about this book are the illustrations (mostly pen and ink) which are amazing and reveal the true mastery of technique Dali had. He idolized Valasquez and thought his fellow modern artists were hacks. Picasso (fellow Spaniard) -- talented but misguided. Realism is the goal. That and flat paintings (look at the canvas at an angle to make sure your brush strokes aren't building up any ridges of paint).
Worth $10 fursure.

Great book for just after you've gotten some basics

This is a book on oil painting which is peppered with Dalinian absurdities and illustrations.
I like Dali's writing personality. But if you don't find humor in it, then just skip to the useful parts such as underpainting. I started using his advice for under and over painting colors ('glazes') and the results are wonderful. (soon to be posted on my website) He spells out very clearly how to do this. This is information that is not really spelled out in other books. Check out the oil painting - "Galarina" - of his wife which is reproduced in the book. Hundreds of hours of work.
Amongst some humorous and impractical "secrets" - making medium out of wasps, et al - there is some really sound advice directly from a master. How much would you pay to get two or three private lessons from him?
Humor, unique illustrations, great advice: I think Dali's book is a great bargain. I almost didn't write this review so that I could keep it more to myself!

Interesting and Esoteric

A unique tome, for sure. I find myself looking for tips from time-to-time - but keep in mind this book was written over fifty years ago and many of the materials that he uses are difficult to find, prohibitively expensive, or just plain wierd. And I love wierd. "the Slumber with a Key" is something I'll have to test someday, but I wonder if I'll ever have the time, space and inclination to construct a retrospective sequence of aranariums.
Of particular amusement is his "Dalinian Analysis" system of rating painters (he even rates himself) according to categories such as Genius, Composition, Mystery, Authenticity,etc. In short, he adores Raphael, Vermeer, and Velasquez; and chaffes at Picasso, Mondrian, and (with grace) really lets Cezanne have it, so to speak. Also amusing are the descriptions of various sympathy/antipathy relationships between counterparts found in nature.
A peculiar and inspiring work.

About the Author

Blain Brown is a cinematographer, director and writer based in Los Angeles. He has been the director of photography on features, commercials, music videos, industrials and other types of projects.  He has directed and edited features and commercials, worked as a producer and has had three screenplays produced.

Educated at Long Island University, Harvard Graduate School of Design and M.I.T, he was a commercial still photographer in New York before getting into film production, which he has been doing for 26 years, starting as an electrician, gaffer, and grip and then as a cinematographer, director, writer, and producer.

COMPREHENSIVE

I bought this book because of the glowing review it received in American Cinematographer and then soon after it was the requred book for my cinematography course at USC Film School. I have dozens of books about cinematography, and this is the only one I've ever seen that covers every aspect of cinematography.
Most books are either sort of airy, light-weight musings about aesthetics and philosophy and the other kind is strictly technical: lenses, exposure, etc. This is the one book that covers just about everything you need to know in order to be a professional cinematographer (or an amateur who knows as much as a pro).
It covers everthing from the basics to very advanced stuff and the one thing that most of my camera assistant and camera apprentice friends really like is that it covers "professional practice": the way things are done on real sets, including things like what are the responsibilties of each person: the AC, the gaffer, the grip, etc.
It has a chapter on lighting and one on creating the "look" of a film, but the one thing it doesn't go into heavily is set lighting. That is, I guess, because this author has another book about lighting (which was also a textbook in a film school course I took.) He (or she?) also says in introduction that lighting is a vast subject and there is no way to fit it into one or two chapters - it has to have it's own book.
Anyway, this book is so good, I bought some to give as Christmas presents to friends. Even the ones who are already working professional DP's enjoyed it and said they loved it. I think it is also used in some of the directing courses here at USC. The first half of the book is about the kinds of things a director needs to know as well as the DP: coverage, editorial, crossing the line, that kind of stuff.

Excellent overall cinematography book

When I first read this book, I already knew quite a bit about cinematography. This book filled in a large number of gaps in my knowledge. It did a rare thing for a cinematography book - it provided information on the actual lights that are used to create cinematic magic (HMIs, Fresnel lenses, PARs, etc.).

The author makes extensive use of computer design (Poser) to show actors, their positioning to the camera, and various lighting scenarios. Using these graphics, the book shows blocking from various angles - all very helpful to the beginning filmmaker.

The book also includes up-to-date information relating to problems faced by current filmmakers (video-to-film transfer, aspects of HD photography, processes such as ENR, etc.). While only described in overview, the explanations were clear and provide a good foundation for these moving targets.

The only topic I thought should have been covered in more detail was blue screen/green screen photography. As anyone who has done compositing with some sort of chroma key knows, the technical aspects alone are difficult. However, that's nothing compared to the problems of achieving artistic cinematography around/with these chroma key shots. It would have been great if some sense of the challenges and solutions of the cinematography of chroma keying would have been included.

Great book, though.

Not sure what all the fuss is about...

...despite the hype, this book is NOT a "great reference book" of cinematography. Instead of a thorough explanation of the craft & art of cinematography, it is instead a slim text which cursorily navigates the dual topics of technical/hardware requirements, and then briefly gestures at some of the aesthetic decisions required of good cinematography.

If you want technicals, books which cover similar territory are "Matters of Light & Depth" (Lowell), "Cinematography" & "Film Lighting" (Malkiewicz), "Placing Shadows" (Gloman/Letourneau), or even "Bare-Bones Guide" (Schroeppel -- which includes a very practical description of the 'Rule of Thirds', ie. the "Golden Mean").

If you're on a 'classical' kick, you could do a whole lot worse than "5 C's" (Mascelli), "Painting with Light" (Alton), or even "The Visual Story" (Block), which explores new media thru the lens[sic] of Eisenstein. Actually, you probably should buy "5 C's" & "Painting" anyway; they're very old, & just-recently returned to print... & in this age of accelerated obsolescence, these books might vanish again, forever.

But if you are interested in the aesthetics of cinematography, you'd do *much* better with texts such as "Cinematography: Screencraft" (Ettedgui), or with the classic "Film Art: An Introduction" (Bordwell/Thompson). In fact, after all the great reviews for "Cinematography: Image Making", I was expecting some sort of full-color/high-quality updated version of "Film Art". Nope... not even close.

IMHO, the book which best combines both worlds (technical + aesthetic) is Viera's "Lighting for Film & Electronic Cinematography". He starts with basic principles, & then quickly moves to famous shots, breaking each one down in terms of what the cinematographer was thinking, what they were 'aiming' for, & how [specifically] to put your lights to duplicate that setup. Wow.

So perhaps the title ("Cinematography: Image Making") is a misnomer, & should be "Technical Image Making". No wait-- there are some shots of beautiful cinematography in the text, right? Um, yes, but... with one terrible caveat: the majority of the images in this book which do come from great films -- are DIGITAL SCREEN-CAPTURES FROM VIDEO(?!!!) Interlaced, blurry, artifacted, awful. Unconscionable.

What a waste of potential, & of good photo-stock paper. Save your $$ for Viera's book, or Lowell's. Or you could do a whole lot worse than "5 C's" or Alton's book... which are old, but classics, describing theory & techniques as appropriate today as they were 100 years ago.

"3 Stars" for "Not-Bad"; "1 Star" for "Crushing Disappointment".

UPDATE 9/1/11: New recommendation for a modern version of "Film Art": "The Filmmaker's Eye", by Mercado. Magnificent choice of imagery from modern films, & excellent shot breakdowns, all organized by shot-type. Too bad it isn't 3x as thick...

As a teacher educator and former early childhood teacher, this book makes me exclaim, "Finally!" Why? A preservice teacher recently confronted me with the query, "We are always talking education for social justice But how do you actually *do* it?" Souto-Manning's book fills that gap by providing insights into how to *do* multicultural education in this field. While not a "how-to" guide, it presents a "critical and situated" (p.8) sampling of approaches, each of which "problematize dominant views of learning" (p. 8). This book brings scholarly, original, well-written and highly readable ideas- grounded in current theories of critical multicultural education- as well as important classroom strategies, that early childhood teachers can take to their classrooms. *Multicultural teaching in the early childhood classroom* provides teachers of young children with authentic strategies to "lift the moment[s]" when inequity or unfairness arises in our classrooms rather than shutting students down with our adult logic. It is a must read for teachers, teacher educators, and students alike!

Souto-Manning clearly has been a practitioner as well as an academic. This book is a reminder that teachers of young children can effectively provide developmentally appropriate activities that foster multicultural understandings. The wide ranging teaching strategies are creative and transformative, providing routes to meaningfully engaging even our littlest learners. I highly recommend this book.

Errors still not fixed...still a piece of ****

I was hoping a 3rd edition meant the errors were fixed. Nope. It looks like this new edition is just to plug some online video crap. All the errors that everyone has complained about in the reviews of the earlier editions are still there. As an example look at page 72 (you can get there by searching for the term "angular velocity"). The first sentence reads "One revolution is 2 radians." Oh really? I always thought one revolution is 2*pi radians. Next scroll down and try to do problem 6.1. In the problem he gives the frequency of 10 rev/s, but in his "solution" he plugs in 0.1 as the frequency. If that weren't enough he can't even calculate the correct WRONG answer! The answer using the wrong frequency should be 0.0355N and with the right frequency 355N. But somehow he comes up with 14N. (Am I doing something wrong? Can someone else check that?).

If this were an isolated problem it would be no big deal but there are problems like this on practically EVERY OTHER PAGE! Stay away from this book. It's a piece of ****!

EDIT: I have to say that after picking this up again I finally couldn't take it anymore. I thought I'd try the chapter on electric force/fields and only the second problem had a ridiculous error: With a +4 charge at the origin and a +9 charge at x=4, clearly the point on the x axis at which a neg test charge experiences zero net force is going to be closer to the +4 charge. But prof Browne says it's at x=2.4! WTF???

And on the topic of subatomic particles good ole' prof Browne is here to teach us that although "postulated to have a charge of e/3, individual quarts have never been detected."

As cute as that last one was, I couldn't take it anymore and so, not having a cat's litterbox or a bird cage to give this book the home it truly deserves, I did the next best thing and tossed it in the recycle bin.

I've only been using this book for a day and ...

I've only been using this book for a day and have already been plagued by typos and errors. For example: page 57, the books states that 56,000x0.05 is 2300. Anyone who has a calculator can confirm that the correct answer is 2800. There was also a worked out solution on page 55 which misses a variable T in the explanation. I spent a solid amount of time trying to figure out how they solved that problem before I realized it was a typo. It makes for a very frustrating studying experience when you are trying to figure out what your study material did wrong in solving the problem instead of trying to figure out what you did wrong in solving the problem.

logical derivations but sometimes unclear, good example problems, needs better practice problems

I am a community college instructor and was looking for a succinct physics text that the students would be more willing to read than the 100-mile-long primary text.
Pros:
- unlike many outline texts, Browne's shows short derivations of the formulas that makes the logical structure easy to trace
- the example problems with solutions often coincide with the essential problems I select for community college physics
- all practice problems have solutions, not only answers like other books
Cons:
- many typos in the theoretical summaries and problem solutions that may confuse a beginner reader
- some theoretical explanations are sloppy and will definitely confuse a beginner reader: "work against friction" (contemporary: mechanical energy converted to heat by frictional forces); potential energy defined through work of "the force" (which force? gravity or the hand moving the object); not very clear conceptual difference between static and kinetic coefficient of friction - the first just limits the static friction force, while the second determines the kinetic friction force, etc.
- practice problems are interesting but sometimes too complicated or not similar to the typical problems in college physics textbooks. Most notable example are the practice problems in Newton's Laws section which are inadequate in number and difficulty variations.
- solutions are sometimes not clearly explained, which will leave the reader wonder

I like the logical derivations of the formulas but some require better rewording and the practice problems need update to contemporary textbooks.

The ideal outline would be a re-write of Browne's derivations and example problems with the Shaum's College Physics Outline by Bueche example and practice prolems, which are better correlated with the level and content of contemporary college physics textbooks.
