Trish Milburn is an author of young adult, contemporary romance, and paranormal romance novels for Bell Bridge Books and Harlequin Books. She’s a fan of road trips, hiking, visiting national parks, and sci-fi/fantasy cosplay. When she sold her first book, she bought herself a TiVo so she wouldn’t have to miss any of her favorite shows while she was busy working on writing deadlines. Two of her very unrelated dreams are to hike the Appalachian Trail and to see at least one of her books turned into a movie (and maybe even have a cameo appearance).

Good Characterization

This author obviously knows the characters and their voices. The plot was good too. I really liked it. I'd have happily read an entire novel based on that plot. Really I felt like the story was rushed.

One minor thing about the plot though. She kept saying the vampires would die in the cave from not having blood but the wouldn't have. Unless this is an alternate reality, they would have just desiccated. But that isn't a big deal.

Any who, good read. Worth what was spent.

Great story.

I loved this story. The author is clearly a fan of the show, and made the story seem like a mini episode. An interesting glimpse into what if Klaus and Caroline were to get together. Can't wait to read more from this author, and more stories from kindle worlds.

6 vampires wake to find their daylight rings gone-a witch angry at Caroline wants her friends to turn on her. Klaus's love for Caroline is palable.i wish the vampire dairies focused more on these two and their remarkable chemistry

About the Author
Paul Mercieca is a lecturer in the School of Education at Curtin University in Western Australia, where he coordinates postgraduate programs in applied linguistics. He has worked in the UK, Egypt, Oman, Australia, and Vietnam, and completed doctoral research into migrant subcultures in 2010. Currently, he is the executive editor of the English Australia Journal.

Anne Chapman is Winthrop Professor of Education in the Graduate School of Education at The University of Western Australia. She is the director of transnational programs and coordinates and teaches units in the school’s postgraduate programs.

Marnie O’Neill is a professor of education in the Graduate School of Education at The University of Western Australia, where she served as dean and head of school for five years. She was also the inaugural director of teaching for pre-service teacher education and joint coordinator of the Doctor of Education program.

About the Author
Judith Martin, born a perfect lady in an imperfect society, is the author of the “Miss Manners” columns and best-selling books, two novels, and a travel book on Venice. She and her husband live in Washington, DC.

Relevant and Enlightening

Miss Manners addresses all kinds of concerns faced by people in the workplace in her usual wise and humorous style. Sometimes I wonder how Judith Martin finds out about the things that people do -- things they would never do in her presence. She's able to discern much more than just what a Gentle Reader tells in a letter. Almost like she's been there, done that. But that's not possible...

MISS MANNERS MINDS YOUR BUSINESS is the latest in a long line of Miss Manners books. As always, Judith Martin is at the helm, this time joined by her real-life son, Nicholas Ivor Martin, GM for Chicago's Lyric Opera. An enjoyable book in the Miss Manners style; those who have read her earlier books will have a good idea what to expect. For those that haven't, each chapter is in two parts: the first, Judith Martin's (Miss Manners') thoughts on aspects of business life, particularly the inroads of privacy-destroying technology and the amount of "pseudo-socializing" that would make colleagues and co-workers into friends and buddies -- or does it? The second part consists of Q&A from beleaguered questioners and Miss Manners' sensible and often witty answers. A fine book, but I did miss the pen-and-ink drawings that have accompanied many earlier titles such as the ground-breaking Miss Manners' Guide to Excruciatingly Correct Behavior (Freshly Updated) (1978, revised 2005). Employees are frequently urged to reveal their pasts in terms of disadvantages overcome, even to the extent of mentioning 12-step-histories, ironically putting the truly strait-laced and circumspect under a cloud of suspicion for suspected, but repressed or unacknowledged sins. This was a tough row to hoe, but it came off well. I wish the book had been a little longer.

This book breaks my heart

This book breaks my heart. I was excited to see that someone was still aware of the problems of children in the wake of working mothers. I was particularly excited to see that T. Berry Brazelton had contributed to the Foreward. Having worked in Child Care Resource and Referral I was familiar with his work. I had heard him speak. He is impressive as an advocate for children. I have also been a single mother, and a working mother, given that child support is not really an option any more and welfare has its ups and downs. I had also been the firstborn of 7 siblings and from the time I was 12 I was really their primary caretaker as my mother took up volunteer work and then paid work. My father was around, and he worked as well. With 7 children you kind of have to. I resented the loss of my mother at that time. I pivoted around the time she had always been home, cooking, cleaning, baking, folding diapers, and I was her little helper. And then, she was, for all intents and purposes to my mind, gone. I was born in 1953, when most mothers were home. By the 1960s and early 70s things had changed, the female labor force rose by a remarkable 34 percent. Now, most mothers are expected to work, which leaves infants, toddlers, preschoolers, youngsters, and teenagers pretty much in a catch as catch can environment of either expensive or cheap, low quality child care; unless they are fortunate enough to have relatives who will help for free. By the time they are twelve they are, like I was, like my children were, latchkey children. I see all around me the debris of a society that gives their children short shrift, whether they mean to or not. The US has one of the highest rates of infant mortality in the world. I would venture to guess that many women have abortions because they can't afford children ... and the fact is, the population is growing faster than we can keep up. The book states the problem succinctly...and then. And then we get into what children need in their various stages of development, and what we, as a society, lose when those needs are not met. And then we are handed what is basically a government plan that requires more funding so that children get the care they need from better qualified child care providers, better intervention for mothers who are poor or depressed (always easier to target the mothers), better prenatal care and better education and care even before pregnancy; smoking cessation (for mother, I'm sure), intervention for alcoholism ... and I wonder who the writer thinks these mothers are? Are they just going to walk passively along because the government is here to help them? Is it so easy to intervene in a domestic violence situation? Is the answer more power for CPS? I shudder to think so. That's not what children need. Children need their mothers. And mothers, even working mothers, need to make their own decisions, especially at a time when our government is far from trustworthy, and Big Pharma is all about Big Profit. That said, read the book for yourself. If you are in the field, I'm sure you will find it helpful. I was sadly disappointed.

The appendix list other countries that provide far better supportive services for working mothers than we do. Be that as it may, it is also not so easy for those mothers to get hired when hiring them means they are less likely to be present and more expensive to hire. The solution is not an easy one. Dis-empowering mothers is not the answer.

A cry from the heart - what can be done to help our smallest citizens?

What an important book!

Lally investigates the latest research on the social and cognitive growth of newborns. Today we know "babies are 'programmed' to expect and depend on certain kinds of experiences happening at particular times in their developments. These...critical periods" (p 20) if not developed can result in lifelong impairment to the children.

For example, eyes will never develop the ability to work together if the baby has no visual experiences between 3 and 8 months.

Of all the research Lally uncovers, here is the most astounding fact: "Orphans placed in foster homes before their second birthday often recovered from serious developmental problems, diminished IQ...and emotional attachments" (p 21), whereas those kept in orphanages past their second birthday never really recovered. This is a shocking and frightening finding.

Babies under two can recover; babies older than that may be so damaged they can never fully recover. Given that fact, how can we make certain that all infants receive the care they so desperately need?

But it isn't simply physical and cognitive grown we are discussing. Empathy, the ability to love and to trust all begin with the earliest experiences of a newborn. "What babies need at this period of development is caring and predictable interactions" (p 44) with their loving mothers.

Depressed or absent mothers can endanger a baby's future. "Depressed mothers tend to be less responsive, more negative, and emotionally more subdued during social play with their infants. Their children, as early as 2 to 3 months of age, reflected this diminished responsiveness" (p 47) even when being held by someone other than the mother.

"Language pathways in the brain" are activated even before infants begin to speak.

These are all crucial skills, that will bring success in later school, or skills that will languish and perhaps never develop fully.

This is why it is so devastating to learn that only one in four infant care situation is adequate. Think of that. Only one in four. Few poor women can find good preschools for their babies. It is these infants who are placed in the most precarious position, given over to poorly paid and poorly trained staff, caregivers who are too overworked or too lacking in caring to provide good care for infants.

Sixty years ago families were stable and babies were raised and nurtured by their mothers. Fast forward through titanic social changes, through feminism, through the gradual erosion of marriage, through a broken economy, and the majority of our babies are not being raised in stable families.

Far from it. The majority - yes, over fifty percent - of mothers under the age of thirty are not married when they give birth to a child. How many of these women can find decent childcare?

Lally is right on target with this book. It is vital that the situation in the US change with regards to the raising of our children.

A Must Have Tool in Childhood Development Professions

This 169 page book has to be on e the best professional resources I have ever read. I'm glad it is now in my personal, professional library. Any Social Worker, teacher, Childhood/Early Childhood Development worker, Parent Educator and other professions that have contact with children - this book is a must have. Also should be placed on the syllabus as required reading in college courses. Why am I saying this?

"For Our Babies" is the most precise and concise opportunity of information in understanding the dynamic of understanding children in America today. Want to understand the education system? Begin here. Want to understand why American children are not doing as well as children in other countries? Begin here. Have any doubts about the necessity for prenatal care? Begin here. Mr. Lally really embraces his 40 years plus in working with children.

The chapters are chronological in both organization and facts making the read easy and understandable - no large medical terms here. I strongly recommend this book for any parent or professional.

How and why "the smallest market efforts can produce outsized sales results if you focus on the right issues"

The observation by Drew Williams and Jonathan Verney that I include in the title of this review reminds me yet again of another observation, by Peter Drucker in 1993: "There is surely nothing quite so useless as doing with great efficiency what should not be done at all." Years later, Michael Porter concurred: "The essence of strategy is choosing what not to do." Obviously, if the given objective is to create or increase demand for an offering, then the Drucker and Porter observations are especially relevant because it is also true that the largest marketing efforts can produce smaller (if not minimal) results if the focus is on the wrong issues.

I have some concerns about the "beast" metaphor but defer to Williams and Verney's preference. Beasts do indeed consume and become irritated when hungry, then desperate when starving. I guess a beast's rumblings can be correlated with early-warning signs that a company is at increasingly greater risk. On second (third?) thought, let's forget about the "beast" metaphor, OK? The program provided in this book is eminently sensible and, for startups as well as or division or departments within legacy companies, the initiatives that Williams and Verney suggest are cohesive, comprehensive, and practical if (HUGE "if") those who adopt the methodology make appropriate, albeit minor adjustments to accommodate their own organization, and, determine with ruthless rigor what must done as well as when and how to do it, and by whom.

I commend Williams and Verney on their skillful use of reader-friendly devices that include a boxed checklist of key points used as a header to introduce each chapter, dozens of Figures inserted throughout the narrative, mini-profiles of entrepreneurs and lessons to be learned from them, and a "Next Up" set of questions at the conclusion of each chapter that served, for me, as a head's up.

The seven-step process that Williams and Verney introduce and explain, they claim, will generate "BIG, HAIRY, OUTRAGEOUS Sales Growth." Whereas Jim Collins recommends a BHAG to serve as an inspiration to achieve a Big Hairy Audacious Goal, Williams and Verney promise what their multi-dimension methodology will produce. I would have included Profitable and strongly emphasized the importance of profitability that is [begin italics] sustainable [end italics]. Also, I would eliminate most of the exclamation points and use of ALL-CAP except with acronyms. These are possibilities to consider if and when there is a revised and updated edition. The Index is excellent.

All executives - not only entrepreneurs - should ask the right questions, listen to their best customers, focus on resource allocation, attract their best prospects (profile provided by their best customers), pursue those prospects, nurture prospects that are engaged, and measure success.

Drew Williams and Jonathan Verney offer a wealth of information, insights, and counsel. Some of the material is overcooked, as noted, and the presentation can sometimes seem (at least to me) awkward. On balance, however, for certain leaders in certain circumstances, this book could well be the difference between success and failure if (HUGE "if") they read and then re-read the book with appropriate care and then apply effectively the material that is most relevant to the given needs, goals, and resources. It is also imperative there is effective communication, cooperation, and (most important of all) collaboration during a process that concentrates on what is most important rather than on what is urgent.

Helpful for a college professor

One of my roles as a college professor in Communication Studies is to make sure that I am remaining updated in workforce trends. In the current economy, there is a fair chance that a percentage of my students will "go it alone" and move into entrepreneurship. Feed the Startup Beast intrigued me immediately because the steps are extremely practical and seemingly doable. I particularly appreciated that one could follow sample businesses (different genres of business, as well) to see how those businesses realistically implemented the suggestions.

One note of concern I had about the book is that it seems to presume that someone is already in business, rather than just starting out. The first chapters of Feed the Startup Beast involve business owners surveying existing customers. My question is: What if you are so new that you don't have an existing customer base? This somewhat challenged the idea of the book being truly for startups, or rather those who need to re-ignite businesses or expand reach.

Regardless, the survey themes could be transfered to a new business and then the rest of the ideas are unique. I loved the multi-layered examples of e-mail marketing and thought that many could be accomplished by beginners. I will look forward to discussing numerous elements of this book in my classes.

My recommendation is that every sales or entrepreneur mastermind group should devote two or three sessions to discussing the ideas Williams and Verney present.

My brief video review quotes selected passages, yet there are dozens of other "takeaways," such as: "Because a stunning 70 percent of B2B buyers rate how vendors engaged with them as being more important to their decisions than what those vendors were selling."

Again: "Your value proposition is the pressing business pain you solve for your Beast Prospects, in their own words. This is a pain that you consistently solve better than anyone else and that your prospects are willing to pay you money to alleviate."

A mislabeled book

Adobe Photoshop CS4 for Photographers is a grab-bag of tips, tricks, and techniques for image manipulation, especially compositing. Some chapters that aren't really about Photoshop at all made it in as well, including some surprisingly basic tips on how to shoot sharp photos to good common-sense advice on how to run a photography business, and some slightly bad advice about running a backup system. (No, making copies on DVD's really isn't worth the trouble; a properly-run backup system on magnetic media is more secure, cheaper, and much, much less work.)

This is, in fact, the book's greatest weakness -- it often loses sight of its intended readership. The meat of the book is about compositing techniques, which are of primary interest to professional photographers doing catalog or advertising work, but they will not be very interested in the basic or non-Photoshop related chapters.

The techniques run the gamut from the simple, brilliant, and immediately useful (such as very clever ways of using Extended Photoshop's Stack editing for a variety of image manipulation tasks, or creative uses of Content Aware Scaling), to the incredibly complex (such as creating convincing drop shadows on a textured background in a multiple composite product photo). Advanced masking techniques, hair retouching, and other often difficult compositing-related techniques are also covered.

The upshot is that any individual reader will very likely find about one third of the book useful. The rest will be either not applicable to what s/he does, something s/he already knows, requires proficiences s/he does not (yet) have, or requires Adobe Photoshop CS4 Extended, which s/he has not bought.

This book should really have been called "Compositing in Adobe Photoshop CS4 Extended." That way, it would have been possible to drop the few chapters that had nothing much to do with compositing, replace some of the rather inane non-Photoshop chapters with an overview of what compositing is, and isn't, good for, with perhaps a note on the ethics of photo manipulation and a short historical overview thrown in, and rearrange the material to form a more coherent and focused whole. As it is, it's not a bad book by any means, and any "green-belt" Photoshop user will likely find something useful in it. With a more coherent vision of its readership and better focus on its core message it could have been much better.

For Sophisticated PS Users

When Martin Evening published his comprehensive "Adobe Photoshop CS4 for Photographers: A Professional Image Editor's Guide to the Creative use of Photoshop for the Macintosh and PC" he told us that he had to tell so much about Photoshop CS4 that he would come out with another book dealing with applications and here it is, written together with Photoshop guru Jeff Schewe.

The chapters include advice on what to do before you shoot; methods of improving image quality; mending and blending; masking and composting; a chapter called "cooking with Photoshop" which includes information on merging, black and white and color effects; printing; and minding your business.

I'm not always certain where the boundary is between intermediate and advanced Photoshop users, but I suspect that if you feel comfortable using the Pen tool, you will be the kind of user this book aims at. For the rest of us, some of this book will be helpful while other material will be over our heads. The chapter on compositing included a lengthy discussion describing the preparation of an image in a many-stepped process that seemed way beyond anything I would ever assay. I think of this kind of work as being in the space between photography and graphic design. Yet, for a commercial photographer, learning the skills described can certainly provide additional clients and sources of income.

On the other hand the chapter on cooking with Photoshop contained information on using photomerge that I instantly put to use and the discussion of content aware scaling seemed like old hat. Rather than describe the basic process of using an inkjet printer, the chapter on printing discussed the best way to prepare for custom profiling and the preparation of images for CMYK work. The business chapter visited archiving and setting rates, and seemed more designed to remind photographers that that these were important subjects that had better be given serious consideration.

Occasionally I was reminded that the book was more like a cook book, in that it didn't always present an integrated process but sometimes, unrelated techniques. But unlike most cook books, this book didn't lead you through a step-by-step process with settings without explanation, but rather tried to explain what the various steps were trying to accomplish. One can follow along with the images provided on the accompanying disk. (The DVD also provides movies which are substantially the same as some of written text, except that they move along pretty quickly, but some people might favor this method of learning. Also on the DVD are a few PDF's that include short sections of Evening's earlier Photoshop CS4 book, and demo versions of Photokit software which I was unable to install on my computer.)

This is not a book for beginners. To benefit you will have to know and have experience with most of the tools and panels of Photoshop. Moreover, even if you are experienced, the techniques that the authors provide may not prove of use to you. But that's the way it is with more advanced Photoshop techniques. I think it will be worth while for more advanced users to see if there is anything of value for them in this book.

Excellent Book for Understanding CS4

Martin Evening's two books on CS4, the second with Jeff Schewe, are excellent.

As a programmer with a strong technical background, but new to photography, the two books have been very helpful. Their clear explanations, both written with examples and videos to cement those concepts, excellent graphics, along with their photographer's perspective allow the reader to come into their studio and see how an accomplished professional photographer brings pictures to life.

The key, for me, was at the end of the workshop, I understood what I needed to do, why I needed to do it and how to bring it to fruition. Their sections on sharpening and printing alone are worth the price of admission. I understand much more of how (and where, when and why) to use CS4, especially Camera Raw. They give insight on how best to manage workflow, understand sharpening, handle "exceptions" in your photos and how to bring my photos out of the printer.

Having trouble getting your landscape shots out of the fog? Read page 47 of the "Raising your IQ" chapter. Having trouble understanding when and how much to sharpen your images? Watch the movie tutorials and follow their clear explanations. Try it on your own photos - don't use their examples! Having trouble matching the output color even though you've calibrated your monitor, downloaded all the profiles, bought that excellent Epson photo printer, etc., etc., read their output chapters. The proof of the pudding is in the eating - or in seeing your own pictures pop out of the print you hold in your hand.
