PreS—It is spring on the farm, and Kitten is out exploring and visiting the new babies. The feline sees the bees on the flowers, the redwing blackbird by its nest, a chick, a duckling hatching, and more. At the end of a busy day, the cat returns to a house and settles down for a night of sweet dreams. The text and the mixed-media illustrations are at times inconsistent with what is described and portrayed, e.g., "Frog croaks,/Tadpole glistens" shows the pair, but the tadpole does not "glisten." A few pages later, "Pig oinks,/Piglet drinks." Directly below the text, Kitten is lapping milk from a bowl, while on the left-hand side of the spread a piglet is shown nursing. The illustrations are filled with delightful images and the brief text will appeal to the very young.—Linda Staskus, Parma Regional Library, OH

Wonderful and fun book

The Easter bunny dropped this book off for my daughter in her first Easter basket several months ago. She immediately loved the book and my husband and I love reading it to her. The artwork is well done and really "jumps" off the page. There are so many animals and things for my daughter to learn about on each page. She's 14 months now and points to new things every day and quickly catches on. I love that she gets excited to learn things, like what that white, round thing is in the night sky (moon) and even small pictures of animals, like the horse off in the distance, still "pop" enough that she can recognize them. Plus this book has a great ending....the kitten goes to bed after a long day of exploring, which is why its a great one to read before a nap or bedtime. This family LOVES this book.

"Kitten's Spring" is a lovely bit of colorful freshness filled with eye-popping mixed-media page-filling illustrations and delicately rhyming text that will keep children ages 1-4 turning pages and following the story, both in text and picture. "Kitten's Spring" is the perfect early springtime gift for a young child, even if they are still a bit winter-bound. "Kitten's Spring" helps keep hope alight for the longer, lighter, warmer days of spring that are surely coming, even during the darkest days of winter.

Baby animals

Fernandes is described as a 3-D illustrator. Her characters are sculpted from Fimo-clay and added to a collage that includes painted backgrounds and natural materials. Her sweet rhyming text focuses on the baby animals of spring, piglets, tadpoles, lambs, ducklings and owlets. This is the first Fernandes book I've read. Little ones should love this.
