Review

"The explanations are easy to understand.  Concepts are demonstrated by series of photos of the same subject with different lighting.  Diagrams supplement the written explanations.  I find the use of progressively more intriguingly lighted pictures, of the same subject, very helpful.  That technique enabled me to understand concepts better.Focus on Lighting Photos seems to be geared for readers who are somewhat familiar with photography in general.  I would say intermediate level.  However, there is a very good glossary of the photo terms used.  If you have not taken a photo class, it is fairly easy to follow along. The writing style is informal, clear and precise.  I really enjoyed Focus on Lighting Photos.  The techniques it presents are exciting and inspiring.  It is a fairly easy read."--Big Bear Computer Club

About the Author
Fil Hunter is a highly respected commercial photographer specializing in still life and special effects photographs for advertising and editorial illustration. During a career spanning over three decades, he has worked for such clients as America Online, US News, Time-Life Books, Life Magazine (27 covers), the National Science Foundation, and National Geographic. He has taught photography at the university level and has served as technical consultant on a number of photographic publications. Mr. Hunter has won the Virginia Professional Photographer's Grand Photographic Award three times. He lives in Alexandria, VA.
Robin Reid started out as a classically trained pianist. Her first year in college was on board Semester at Sea, thereby traveling to more than 28 countries. Fascinated by the diversity of cultural color, she spent much of her time making pictures. While earning a BA in International Politics and the Middle East from George Washington University, she also attended schools and lived extensively in Vienna, Austria and Berlin, Germany for extended times and further added to her photographic portfolio. After working on Capitol Hill for several years, she changed directions and danced professionally for the next 15 years, producing publicity photos for many of her fellow dancers. Finally realizing that photography was her true calling, she apprenticed at a portrait/wedding studio, starting as a custom color printer and progressing to photographer and retouching expert. At that time, she also participated in competitions for Virginia Professional Photographers, winning various awards, including Best Portrait of Children. After opening her own studio, she has gone on to shoot portraits, not only for local families, but also for various businesses and government entities (including, but not limited to the US Supreme Court, the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, the US Tax Court, Time-Life Books, McGraw-Hill, American Management Systems, and HSI). Her work also includes product photography for the US Supreme Court (gift catalog), American Diabetes Forecast, Network Marketing, and others. She has taught studio portraiture in her studio for years for the Alexandria Art League. She continues to do all her own photographic printing (both traditional darkroom and digital). She is also a graphic designer, with a special interest in book layout.

Foundation for Photography Lighting
By AmazonViner
I am best classified as a part-time professional location based shooter who shoots without use of assistants. I shoot all Nikon gear (including an SB-900 and 3 SB-700's) and typically do event, portrait, intimate, and children's sporting events. I do not do weddings due to the complexity of the event (that is a confession by the way). I love photography and would do what I do for free but I happen to get paid much of the time. Lighting is critical to everything I do to some extent; more so than others. This book has lessons for all aspects of my photography.

This book starts out by avoiding the inevitable talk of pro gear and the inherent costs associated with an extensive supply of nearly limitless commercial light modifiers. Rather, the book starts with DIY (Do It Yourself) lighting equipment that you either have, can cheaply buy (Home Depot is a great resource), or simply build. This is welcome approach as I loathe having to spend $400 on a scrim. In fact, the author recommends not buying expensive lighting gear to start off, though many will find such expenditures "necessary." Either way, DIY lighting is a movement gaining popularity and you may want to research it further. This book does a great job of introducing the DIY concept.

Beyond the DIY aspect, you will find explanations of advanced techniques involving softboxes, multiple flash, reflectors, etc.. Granted, you will need access to that equipment to really engage the book at some point. However, the concepts are pretty much the same and serve as a foundation for application. I typically recommend finding a local photography club for possibly sharing gear, especially lighting gear. The book will provide great examples and outcomes that can be replicated. This will build a foundation from which you can explore additional lighting options.

Clearly this book is for beginners and serves as an incredible resource. If you are one of those prosumers who bought a low-end DSLR and are considering taking your photography to the next level, do not buy a new camera. Instead, buy this book first and take up lighting, which is how awesome images are really made. Also, simple lighting techniques with DIY gear will provide a far greater return of investment than buying the latest Nikon pro camera. Too often I see people using these cameras in the program mode. You can do the same with a compact camera. It's called "Scene" mode.

It is also worth noting that the layout of this book including font's and callouts is very impressive and really assists in grasping the information. Very professionally done.

A Snapshot At Making Great Photos! FOCUS ON-LIGHTING PHOTOS: A Critical Review.
By Andre Lawrence
[[VIDEOID:mo14ENJU081BJLG]]A spotlight series based on a single subject, "Lighting Photos" by Fil Hunter and Robin Reid takes a look at different ways lighting can affect a shot.

The book's size is roughly about 75-80% of a normal sized book. The layout is impressive as the text is punctuated with hints, interspersed as "post-it" notes, where appropriate.

The book covers a broad range of subjects from profiles, to outdoor lighting, to fruits, to professional shoots. There's something in here for everyone who likes taking pictures.

Book Highlights:

Ch. 1 "Light Modification," pp.'s 6-12
"Controlling the Size of The Light," pp.'s 13, 14

Ch. 2 "Off-Camera Flash," pp.'s 25, 26
"How To Trigger Flash," pp.'s 27-31, 35-59

Ch. 3 "The Color of Light"

Ch. 4 "Light & Shadow"

Ch. 5 "Sunlight"

Ch. 6 "Where Do We Put The Light?"
* "Broad Light vs. Hair Light vs. Background Light," pp's 112-115
* "Feminine vs. Masculine Pose," pg. 115
* "Rim Lighting/ Kicker," pp's 116, 117
* "Butterfly/ Beauty Lighting," pp's 118-127

I have so many books on photography and not a single one emphasize lighting as an "art," the way this book does. Knowing how to light, not just having a flash bulb ready is really knowing to capture the vision of the moment. I've really learned a lot from this relatively small book.

I can't help but to think about another recent book I got on lighting as I went through this book. In that book, the publisher was celebrating 20 years of the author/subject's lighting designs from celebrity weddings, to political events to concert after-parties to private, estate affairs. It was a book on a master of lighting rooms and banquet halls, small intimate table for 2 and I couldn't help commenting that the pictures (although broad enough to show the depth of the author's work) was so poorly developed that most of the pictures were washed out. In too many of the photos, you weren't able to distinguish, for instance, where the wall began from the back of the couch. This book would have been very helpful.

This is a great title.

Smart Camera + Lighting = Excellent Photos
By Ginny Mapes
With modern digital cameras that focus accurately, good exposure every time is a given--or is it? Even with sun or flash, there is a lot more to learn about lighting, and it does not involve a lot of expensive equipment. Smart cameras and smart flashes let us concentrate on our art. A little knowledge about lighting will help create even better photos. How light works and how to get it where you want it and with the quality of light you need is beautifully explained and demonstrated in this book. Knowledge of lighting--whatever source--is the goal of the book and the photographers who contributed to Lighting Photos. You will not need a ton of gear or expensive strobes to get exciting results. This is an introductory book, but a few terms go beyond an introductory explanation. A handy glossary is included. Book is organized into chapters for example: Color of Light; Light and Shadow; Sunlight; Pets; and Portraits. Each chapter is written clearly and concisely with artistic photos, diagrams, and little "post-it notes," or colorful captions. Three column layout is accented with photos (what to do--and -- what not to do.) The font sometimes changes to a hand-written look for appeal. The entire book invites the reader to learn about lighting and try the techniques. The authors make learning about light fun and easy--a lighting class in a neat little book! Highly recommended!
