The Hip Hop Movement: From R&B and the Civil Rights Movement to Rap and the Hip Hop Generation, by Reiland Rabaka

The Hip Hop Movement offers a critical theory and alternative history of rap music and hip hop culture by examining their roots in the popular musics and popular cultures of the Civil Rights Movement and Black Power Movement. Connecting classic rhythm & blues and rock & roll to the Civil Rights Movement, and classic soul and funk to the Black Power Movement, The Hip Hop Movement explores what each of these musics and movements contributed to rap, neo-soul, hip hop culture, and the broader Hip Hop Movement. Ultimately, this book’s remixes (as opposed to chapters) reveal that black popular music and black popular culture have always been more than merely “popular music” and “popular culture” in the conventional sense and reflect a broader social, political, and cultural movement. With this in mind, sociologist and musicologist Reiland Rabaka critically reinterprets rap and neo-soul as popular expressions of the politics, social visions, and cultural values of a contemporary multi-issue movement: the Hip Hop Movement.

Rabaka argues that rap music, hip hop culture, and the Hip Hop Movement are as deserving of critical scholarly inquiry as previous black popular musics, such as the spirituals, blues, ragtime, jazz, rhythm & blues, rock & roll, soul, and funk, and previous black popular movements, such as the Black Women’s Club Movement, New Negro Movement, Harlem Renaissance, Civil Rights Movement, Black Power Movement, Black Arts Movement, and Black Women’s Liberation Movement. This volume, equal parts alternative history of hip hop and critical theory of hip hop, challenges those scholars, critics, and fans of hip hop who lopsidedly over-focus on commercial rap, pop rap, and gangsta rap while failing to acknowledge that there are more than three dozen genres of rap music and many other socially and politically progressive forms of hip hop culture beyond DJing, MCing, rapping, beat-making, break-dancing, and graffiti-writing.

Review
Persuasively argued, carefully researched, The Hip Hop Movement places hip hop in the tradition of previous Black political moments. Reiland Rabaka presents a bold challenge to hip hop scholars, Black Studies practitioners, Civil Rights historians and youth politics pundits alike….One of the most important analyses of hip hop and hip hop scholarship to date, Reiland Rabaka’s The Hip Hop Movement is a major contribution to our understanding of post-civil rights era politics and movement building. (Bakari Kitwana, author of Why White Kids Love Hip-Hop: Wankstas, Wiggers, Wannabes and the New Reality of Race in America)

Rabaka (Africana studies, Univ. of Colorado, Boulder) begins not only by arguing the existence of a hip-hop movement, but also by defining its parameters and identifying the hip-hop generation. He also examines hip-hop's links to other music genres (rhythm and blues, rock 'n' roll, soul, and funk), as well as to black political movements. The author provides a rich look at the evolutions of these music genres and then their impacts on hip-hop. Rabaka examines fusions and samplings in which hip-hop artists have, for example, produced rock 'n' roll tracks or infused funk into their sound. The book is somewhat awkward in places in its effort to survey important music genres between 1945 and 1980 and link them to hip-hop. The author only secondarily mentions the influences of African and Caribbean music on hip-hop. Given their importance to hip-hop's development, an explanation for their omission would have sufficed. Overall, the book provides a depth of information, recalling many artists and music from hip-hop's old school and golden age. Rabaka analyzes hip-hop's complexity and various dialogues over the direction and presence of the hip-hop movement. Summing Up: Recommended. All levels/libraries. (CHOICE)

Connecting classic rhythm & blues and rock & roll to the Civil Rights Movement, and classic soul and funk to the Black Power Movement, The Hip Hop Movement critically explores what each of these musics and movements’ contributed to rap, neo-soul, hip hop culture, and the broader Hip Hop Movement. Ultimately, The Hip Hop Movement reveals that black popular music and black popular culture have always been more than merely “popular music” and “popular culture” in the conventional sense and most often reflect a broader social, political, and cultural movement.

The whole world revolves around hiphop..
By topofthecity
Wow, I guess the only way those freakin millennials can know that anything existed (musically) before hiphop is to write a book connecting everything to hiphop. That's typical! Searching through amazon, I find more books with the term HipHop in the title, then say Funk, and the ones that are supposedly about Funk, still spend way too many pages connecting it to hiphop, because of the damn sampling (see Rickey Vincent, etc.) .
How about write a book (or two) about JUST R&B, & Funk - its important enough to stand on its own, without ALWAYS having to share the spotlight with hiphop? Millennials & future generations will ONLY know about hiphop (cause that's all that people write about or talk about in the media) , they won't know about the beautiful sounds/arrangements/grooves/riffs/solos on P-FUNK, Prince, Earth, Wind & Fire, Ohio Players, Cameo, Stevie Wonder, Teena Marie, James Brown, & Rufus ALBUMS, cause not enough people write about them. In fact, they won't know what a groove or solo is.
Now, simpletons are walking around with headphones called beats(!) and this "obey your verse" nonsense on Sprite cans, & we have to have "hiphop" abs? Sick of it all.

Identity and Difference: Studies in Hegel's Logic, Philosophy of Spirit, and PoliticsFrom SUNY Press

Contributors draw on Hegel’s account of identity and difference to challenge conventional theories of identity.

Identity and difference (or sameness and otherness) are contrasting but interrelated terms that have played an explicit role in the development of Western philosophy at least since Plato wrote the Sophist. As Plato pointed out then, and Hegel reiterated more recently in his Science of Logic, the proper comprehension of these terms, and particularly of their interrelation, plays a fundamental role in shaping our conception of philosophical reason itself. The contributors in this book examine Hegel’s treatment of these terms, and the role they play in structuring his philosophical system as a whole and also in shaping his conception of dialectical reasoning.

“Identity in and through difference is the pervading principle of Hegel’s philosophical system. The essays in this book will do much both to explain and clarify Hegel’s argument and to counteract unfounded criticisms that have been made even by some otherwise competent Hegelian scholars. The chapters cover the entire scope of Hegel’s writing: Logic, Philosophy of Mind, Philosophy of Right, and World History, giving a comprehensive view of the way in which Hegel treats the interrelation of identity and difference in these various fields.” — Errol E. Harris, author of Apocalypse and Paradigm: Science and Everyday Thinking

“This challenging and exciting book covers a unified conceptual theme applied both abstractly and concretely in important areas.” — David Kolb, editor of New Perspectives on Hegel’s Philosophy of Religion

“The majority of the contributors to this book are prominent Hegel scholars known for their previous rigorous work, joined by some newer names, all demonstrating mastery of the topic. This collection will be essential reading for those seeking clarification about some of the most challenging issues and problems in Hegelian thought, for scholars who wish to keep abreast of cutting edge work in Hegelian studies, and for any philosopher grappling with the issues of identity and difference.” — David Duquette, editor of Hegel’s History of Philosophy: New Interpretations

With retirement just out of reach, Dave Brandstetter investigates the killing of a Vietnamese immigrant
As an insurance investigator, Dave Brandstetter has spent his life unraveling suspicious deaths. Now, well into middle age, he has decided to retire for the sake of Cecil, the young TV reporter who loves and cherishes him, and has too often risked his own life for Dave’s work. But retirement does not come easily. An old friend in the public defender’s office asks Dave to help Andy Flanagan, a shiftless young man accused of murdering a Vietnamese businessman to defend the Old Fleet—a shantytown of houseboats that has been earmarked for development. Unable to resist the case, Dave heads to the Old Fleet and begins asking questions. Beneath the surface of this oil-slicked slum lurks an international conspiracy so appalling that Dave will regret postponing his retirement. Obedience is book ten in the Dave Brandstetter Mystery series, which also includes Troublemaker and The Man Everybody Was Afraid Of.

“Fast paced and literate . . . Hansen fans should delight in this latest caper.” —Publishers Weekly “First-rate . . . No mystery writer is better at evoking the landscape, the light, the architecture and the ethnic diversity of Los Angeles.” —Time “As always, Hansen continues to write like Ernest Hemingway as filtered through a witty English sensibility.” —Washington Blade

About the Author
Joseph Hansen (1923–2004) was an American author of mysteries. The son of a South Dakota shoemaker, he moved to a California citrus farm with his family in 1936. He began publishing poetry in the New Yorker in the 1950s, and joined the editorial teams of gay magazines ONE and Tangents in the 1960s. Using the pseudonyms Rose Brock and James Colton, Hansen published five novels and a collection of short stories before the appearance of Fadeout (1970), the first novel published under his own name.    The book introduced street-smart insurance investigator Dave Brandstetter, a complex, openly gay hero who grew and changed over the series’s twelve novels. By the time Hansen concluded the series with A Country of Old Men (1990), Brandstetter was older, melancholy, and ready for retirement. The 1992 recipient of the Private Eye Writers of America’s Lifetime Achievement Award, Hansen published several more novels before his death in 2004.

Still love these books
By Sirius
So I finally made it to the tenth book of these series. I was reading these books very slowly, because they were so good and not planning to read the last two soon. I do not agree with another reviewer that this is the worst book of the series of course, but this was actually the first book where I had to pay a little more attention than usual because the writing felt a little dense. But it all paid off for me, the motivations of all the parties came together, the foreshadowing was there, and red herrings were there too. And I always love Dave and Cecil together, so four solid stars from me.

Hansen/Brandstetter is Back in Top Form.
By Tex Reader
4.5 of 5 stars –
I love gay mysteries and romances, and this has been one of the best series combining both, and in the process rightfully became for Joseph Hansen a classic in gay literature. After only a slight lull with the last couple books (but still good), this tenth in the series was just as good as the earlier high-quality ones and continued to build the story.

I liked this for the same reasons I liked each in the series. First off, for those interested, it worked well as a standalone, with its own self-contained mystery, while also further developing the character and life of the MC, his boyfriend and other supporting characters, and smoothly providing any explanations needed to bring a first-time reader up on previous happenings.

Also, it was a nice, short, easy read, with a good, well-paced plot and character development. I enjoyed the walk back in time to my earlier years, with moments of what was then current situations and culture vividly described by Hansen in a way that helped me remember those times. And I liked that the main focus was on the mystery, with the gay aspect and any romance as a major subplot. The mystery itself was engaging and suspenseful, with the investigation having realistic twists and turns. It had a refreshing approach of not featuring your typical detective or PI but an insurance investigator pursuing the clues. I liked Hansen again taking us into a subculture of LA, in this case the Vietnamese, doing a credible job of depicting its culture and its mantra of "obedience." The southern California environs are depicted vividly as well. And I certainly enjoyed the build up of tension, from the racism and the marina to the dangers in the Vietnamese hood.

Hansen also developed nicely the whole set of characters. Of course there was more on the MC, with Hansen really getting into the life and mindset of a hard-boiled, matter-of-fact, honorable, self-accepting, sometimes melancholy gay man who I grew to like for all his skills, heart and humanness. As for the supporting cast, I also got a good feel for who they were, with some new ones to keep things fresh. For those who read the previous books, it was nice that some characters returned; but don't worry first-time readers, they were introduced and described just as if it’s a standalone. A nice bonus has been the MC’s gay life and relationships, and I continued to appreciate the interracial, intergenerational diversity as yet another nice Hansen touch. In this one, I also liked that now sharing center stage with the relationships is the realistic and sympathetic view of someone aging in his life and profession.

I continue to be impressed with the level of quality that Hansen maintains in this series, and I look forward to the next one.

a very weak effort by Joseph Hansen
By lazza
Okay, I admit I am a fan of Joseph Hansen's Dave Brandstetter mystery series. The author does a great job in projecting a gritty feel to L.A., and I'm normally quite entertained with the mysteries our insurance investigator hero (Brandstetter) is asked to solve. However I found 'Obedience' to be very disappointing. The wharf-side shenanigans involving Vietnamese thugs were very confusing. The author threw in too many characters to keep track of, and there was too much dialog and too little action. This is by far the worst Hansen novel I've read.

Bottom line: not worth the time for even the most devote Joseph Hansen fan. Not recommended.

From School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 2-This book, which revisits the characters introduced in The Legend of Ninja Cowboy Bear (Kids Can, 2009), focuses on one friend who loves "thrills and adventure." The cowboy prefers to paint and the bear wants to pick flowers, but the ninja convinces them to jump on beds and climb trees. Predictably, this leads to injuries for everyone except the ninja, and he is left to play alone. He soon realizes that even hyperkinetic activity is no fun without the company of friends, and a happy ending ensues. Bruins sometimes uses vocabulary that's out of sync with young children, for example: "When they got together it usually led to merrymaking, buffoonery, and hilarity"; "The ninja thought the bear was overreacting." The story is message-driven and prosaically told, and the characters have traits rather than personalities. Leung's computer-art illustrations are reminiscent of video games and anime, and they are sure to appeal to young videophiles. Hilary Leung is a graphic artist in Burlington, Ontario, and a graduate of the illustration program at Sheridan College. His work for Kids Can Press includes the very popular Ninja Cowboy Bear series.

For Ninja Cowboy Bear fans this is a welcome new edition. Learning how to play with your friends is a must and kids will relate to Ninja as he gets carried away and then learns to play nicely with his friends. Hilary Leung illustrates this concept adorably. Good friendship book
By Amazon Customer
This is a good friendship book - especially for boys. It's about Ninja who wants to play a game and goes to find his friends. But Bear and Cowboy each want to play something different. Bear and Cowboy play Ninja's game for a little while and then decide they want to play their own games. Ninja then goes off to play by himself before realizing that he's not having fun playing alone. Ninja then decides to join his friends in their games. The illustrations are so simple but adorable and the colors are striking. I'm always looking for frienship books (especially for boys) and was excited to get this one. I think children will enjoy the book and as a school counselor I'm looking forward to using it with students in a lunchtime friendship group. The author's website also has printable activities.

Purchased for my baby niece on an early birthday. I'd bought this previously as a sort of gag gift for a friend because he likes ninjas, but after I went through it I was extremely impressed with the storytelling and lesson presented and the art style is engaging and adorable all at the same time. I would recommend this for any children's library.

Rule Breaker (Breed Book 29), by Lora Leigh

There’s a fine line between animal instinct and human desire—and in her “highly erotic saga” (Fresh Fiction), #1 New York Times bestselling author Lora Leigh crosses it.

Now, in her new novel of the Breeds, the mating heat continues…

Lion Breed and enforcer Rule Breaker has just a few rules he doesn’t break. Not for anything. Not for anyone—like never have sex with a woman outside his own breed, especially a human woman. Especially someone too helpless, too fun loving and too full of life to ever be able to protect herself, let alone help him to protect her.

If the damned animal inside him insists on a mate, then why pick her? A woman who is an easy target and who can be used as a weapon against him at any time.

But what he suspects is mating heat may not be that at all. Just his animal instincts rioting, pacing, irritated whenever he's away from her.

Okay, he can handle that.

What ensues is a fiery affair that breaks all the rules of mating heat and will eventually endanger his mate with the very rules designed to protect the Breeds—for she’s possibly been working against them…

Sometimes, it just didn’t pay a man or a Breed to make a decision, Rule decided as he lounged against the bar at yet another honky-tonk on the list of known clubs Gypsy often found herself at.

Knowing he’d finally caught up with her hadn’t helped his mood, or his irritation. She’d eluded him for a week and he was growing tired of waiting for her to get her ass back to town.

Rule was beginning to think he was going to have to actually chase her down if he was ever going to see her again.

A week between sightings was too damned long a wait, especially once he’d made up his mind to have her.

After going without the sight of her the past week, he was as antsy as an addict needing a fix and wondering if he should worry about that reaction.

And that just pissed him off.

Maybe he just had an addictive personality, he thought as he watched her and several of her friends stroll purposely onto the dance floor.

She was preparing to dance, and God bless her heart but she could turn grown men into slavering animals hungry to fuck whenever she danced. The smell of their lust never failed to cause him to glower at any male

unlucky enough to catch his gaze.

Maybe he was just too damned used to finding her whenever he wanted to.  Hell, he’d watched her practically grow up. He couldn’t count the times he’d slipped to Window Rock in the past nine years to check on the broken, traumatized child who had fought so

valiantly against those Coyotes so long ago.

And he had to say, she’d grown into a hell of a woman.

She was wary and secretive, and the effects of the night her brother died were often apparent in her too-serious gaze.

But she’d turned into a hell of a beauty.

And he was a sucker for a woman in black leather too.

Miss Gypsy Rum McQuade had adopted a penchant for black leather just after her eighteenth birthday. And she’d been driving him crazy just as long too.

Watching the dainty form, leather boots over her knees, short black leather skirt clinging to her hips and luscious ass, a black leather vest that flashed her bronzed belly and the upper curves of her full breasts, he couldn’t help but grin.

He might have been drooling a little, and damn he hoped Dane Vanderale hadn’t caught him.

But hell, that woman was built to tempt, seduce and deliver, all in one package. Rule decided he was the Breed to collect on it too.

He was damned sure tired of all that lush, pretty body going unclaimed by him.

Jaw clenching, his cock throbbing, he watched as she moved. Lifting her arms and moving her hips, her legs shifting gracefully in four-inch heels, her expression becoming exotic, erotic. Sexy enough to make a Breed have to force himself not to pant.

Long, long straight hair, so dark it was almost black and framing a dusky face so delicate he couldn’t stop the hard-on straining the black mission pants he wore. Graceful and witchy, sensual and burning with a hidden fire, she made him want to burn with her, burn in her.

Fluid and graceful, hips and shoulders swaying, jade green eyes gleamed teasingly, long thick lashes at half-mast. Those eyes glittered with wicked promise—and cool distance.

A distance she’d used against him more than once in the past two months since Jonas had brought his investigation to Window Rock.

Tonight, she was just flat avoiding him, and her explanation for her disappearance was causing more than a few raised brows since she’d arrived less than an hour ago.

According to her, she had been at a spa in Broken Butte, New Mexico. The local sheriff who had mated Jonas’s sister, and a deputy, the sheriff ’s cousin who had mated another Breed, had checked into the story and reported back to Rule, mere minutes ago, that Gypsy had never been to that spa in Broken Butte. They knew, because it was no more than a front for the Bureau of Breed Affairs and every customer that came through its doors was completely vetted.

But who said she came in as a customer?

Rule refrained from shaking his head in frustrated disgust.

Gypsy was going to have to be more careful if she intended to keep doing these little odd jobs for one of her bosses, Cullen Maverick. She was going to end up getting her ass burned at this rate. And if her ass got blistered, then his would be fried.

That thought and any other fled his brain, though, as her eyes met his and locked for heated seconds, and he swore the hunger that raged inside her began to burn him hotter.

Amid a floor filled with seductive, graceful women, sexual invitation gleaming in their eyes—eyes without the distance, without the reserve that shimmered in the very air around her, she stood apart with inexplicable awareness.

She gave herself to the music and that was all she was giving herself to, her gaze seemed to warn.

She didn’t give herself to the men who attempted to draw her to them.

She didn’t give herself to the women who would have rubbed against her in sensual abandon. Nor did she give herself to the drunkenness or the drugs that flowed so freely.

She might be as secretive as hell, but purity flowed from her, even as he felt the dark, rich desire trapped within her—like a living flame.

She burned inside.

Rule swore he could see the flame burning there in the center of her eyes. Not the same flame easily glimpsed in a Breed’s or animal’s eyes in a certain light. This was a flame barely contained, burning from the center of the soul, trapped, aching to be released.

A woman aching to be touched.

Love the Breeds but Rule Breaker Story Way Too Convoluted
By Amazon Customer
I just adore Lora Leigh's Breeds and look forward to each new story being released. I don't even mind that there's a repetitive formula to the books ... angst, male resisting the mate idea, danger, passion, chase the bad guys, a few subplots and stealthy secondary characters in the mix and then happily ever after.

But this attempt at convoluted subterfuge was just bizarre. It made no sense - and at the end - it seemed everyone pretty much knew or suspected who all the other secret players were anyway. And the contradictions... I understand Rule Breaker being conflicted, resisting the idea of a mate because of the horror he saw with his mother. He lives his life with the idea of leaving immediately if a possible mate ever comes into his orbit - avoiding having a mate. Has clauses about not taking jobs involving women. Supposedly he doesn't know Gypsy is his mate, although there's a protectiveness and strong attraction since first being part of the team that saves her when she's 15. So for the next 9 years, he watches over her, pulls strings behind the scenes to involve Gypsy in covert activities, and actually finds a way to ensure she remains untouched sexually, saving her virginity for him. But - theoretically - she's not his mate. Huh??

It was nice (as always) to catch glimpses of the other characters and get sneak peaks into their lives, although there wasn't too much of substance. Love Baby Amber, so I'm glad some of her story got resolved even thought that particular plot line was unbelievably weak.

My biggest pet peeve: there's a point at which Rule is unbelievably stupid (don't want to add too much of a spoiler) and unwittingly leaves Gypsy, leaving her feeling totally humiliated. Lots of conflict, hurt ensues. It's a pivotal point in the book and the relationship. Ultimately (of course) they get past it - but Rule never actually explains the misunderstanding to Gypsy. I looked forward to him explaining how she misinterpreted the meaning behind his (undeniably stupid) actions.

Fair disclosure, the book was too long. Far too many pages that didn't add value. I like steamy reads, but the sex scenes were so long and monotonous, I admit to some skimming. There's a small possibility I missed the "big explanation".

Love the world; love the breeds. Will likely continue to buy any others published. But this one was a disappointment.

Getting predictable....also, where are the winged breeds?!?
By Meanbean7
I am a huge fan of Lora Leigh and really love her breed series.....except the past few books. I am finding all her recent books, including the non breed ones, are basically the same plot but with different character names. And I really dislike how she's trended towards everyone knowing who their mates are but either ignoring them or "blocking" the mating heat. This book was really convoluted and has a part where rule really hurts his mate....so much so that everyone is like "she was damaged!" Then....meh. She's over it. I didn't get that at all.
If you're a breed fan no matter what anyone rates Rule Breaker, you must read it. I felt it was slightly better then her last three...but not anywheres as good as Megan's Mark or Coyotes Mate or dawns awakening.

Also, one question that has been driving me crazy!!!!

WHERE ARE THE WINGED BREEDS,!??!?

They were mentioned more towards the beginning of the series and had their biggest appearance in Aidan's story....but since have disappeared. I've been waiting for years for Keegan!

a feel bad book: people who should be allies pointlessly hurt each other
By Margaret
"Rule Breaker" has a core idea that ought have been great. R-- is a Breed male who was traumatized by watching his mom tortured to death. He does not want to risk mating, so hides the knowledge that she is his mate even from himself. The leading lady (G--) feels guilt over her brother's death 9 years before, and has been avoiding intimacy ever since (platonic or otherwise).

Alas, that is not the main plot of the book. The main conflict is internal rivalry between the Breed organization and the Unknown. Remember Honor, the girl whose personality was mystically replaced with another's, by the super secret org "Unknown"? The Unknown help Breeds but will not share information with or talk to anyone, thus leading the Breeds to think them a hostile force. That is Leigh's dumbest plotline from prior books, and it doesn't get any better here. G-- gathers intel for the Unknown but does not know anyone in the org. R-- seems to know everyone in the org except her (or then he does due to continuity errors) but seemingly does nothing for the Unknown. A rediculous number of Breeds within the Breed ranks are Unknown spies who seemingly do not help each other, and their relative positions are never made clear. This conflict is particularly lame because it doesn't develop into anything: no building tension, no climax, nothing.

Most of the book plays out like a childish power play by teenage bullies. Half a dozen characters could easily provide desperately needed aid by speaking up, but they instead choose to "maneuver" secretly in the background, leaving the other characters in fear or mental anguish. Here are three examples. The last one is a spoiler, but I'll mark it. First, I didn't mind that G-- felt guilt, but I did mind her conviction as an adult that her brother's death resulted from her actions. Several of her friends could have proven otherwise to her years before and chose not to (e.g., R--, Jonas, her Unknown contact). For goodness sake, this comes out in the free chapters! Second, R--'s friends and brother don't help him when he is panicking over figuring out that G-- is his mate, even when they had seen this panic coming for years. [Spoiler] Third, the Unknown have knowledge that would help Jonas' sick daughter A--, and though they act upon this knowledge they leave him and his wife worried sick that A-- is dying. [End of Spoiler]

With friends like that, who needs enemies?

Here are some more complaints. The plot is unbelievably complicated, in that it isn't really clear who works for the Unknown and who doesn't and who knows about whom. There are several continuity errors, such as who did or did not know that R-- was going to mate with G--. I absolutely hated that the Breeds let two criminals go free who should have been convicted under Breed Law. This doesn't make any sense in the world schema that Leigh has developed, no matter the emotions of friends and family. We're constantly inundated with nasty threats about what the Unknown will do if someone admits their role in the Unknown, and nasty threats by the Breeds if they find out someone is an Unknown spy. No one ever follows through on these threats; it's just more hostility for no apparent reason.

On the bright side, the erotic scenes were well done. I don't think this is worth the book purchase price. The romance between R-- and G-- was sweet, what little there is of it, but this is a minor part of the book. I recommend trying out another series instead, like Tiger: 7 (New Species) by Laurann Dohner.

The Assault on Public Education: Confronting the Politics of Corporate School Reform. (Teaching for Social Justice (Paperback)), by Willia

In this timely interdisciplinary volume, William Watkins has brought together leading scholars and activists to address some of the most urgent issues facing public education. What is underneath and behind the language of choice, efficiency, and improvement in current neoliberal discourse? How will urban and poor populations be affected? Will privatization lead to increased stratification in our schools? How can public education not only be saved but re-imagined? In accessible language, renowned contributors explore and critique corporate school reform to both inform and serve as an organizing tool for teachers, parents, students, and citizens committed to genuine public education.

Book Features:

  • A comprehensive critique of how corporate power is disrupting universal public education.

  • An illumination of how corporate school reform threatens unions, racial progress, and democracy.

  • An illustration of how private wealth forges public policy.

  • A case study of the public school system in New Orleans.

William H. Watkins is a professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago and author of The White Architects of Black Education.

“As The Assault on Public Education makes so very clear. . . we are witnessing the growth of a destructive set of policies in education and the larger society. This book provides us with a set of articulate analyses of what the future will likely hold if we do not engage in the hard and committed labor of countering these dangerous tendencies today.”

—From the Foreword by Michael W. Apple, University of Wisconsin–Madison

“The Assault on Public Education is a powerful assemblage of scholars, practitioners, and activists who are willing to stand up to the entrenched interests arrayed against public education as we know it. This is a must read for thinking citizen scholars.”

—Gloria Ladson-Billings, University of Wisconsin-Madison

“Today is a pivotal moment for America and its schools. Teachers and others who envision schools that enhance democratic life will find critical theoretical and practical guidance in this book. Use it.”

—Daniel Perlstein, Graduate School of Education, University of California, Berkeley

“Watkins has produced an important and timely work—a much-needed corrective to the dumbing-down of educational policy discourse. The essays here offer a very real challenge to those who have confounded market-based policy with school reform and the well-being of children with the well-being of corporations.”

—Charles Payne, University of Chicago

Crystal clear
By awy
Wow--I have now read a number of quality books on many different facets of education in America during my time at Georgia Southern, but I don't think I have ever read a book as powerful as this one, nor a book that congealed so many of the myriad ideas and conundrums I have had difficulty verbalizing on education that have been bouncing around in my head. This book pulls no punches as on page 2 Watkins states that corporations are "fashioning a new America to conform to their economic and political ideology [by] employing the language of democracy and distress"! I don't know how many times as I read this book I read statements such as this and almost said YES! out loud. This is exactly what is happening. Furthermore, he writes, we "are now being organized around digital technology. We have moved into a new era of techno-globalism [and] the "democracy" has become a performance where the public are spectators" (pg. 8). Again, this passage reminded me of Stiegler's discussion of the impact of technology on the manipulation of the citizenry in Taking Care of Youth and the Generations. This "techno-globalism" makes the control of the citizens much easier as reality is conveyed to us in instantaneous digital format that is ever-changing and to use the words of Stiegler "short-circuiting" our young and the needed order of the generations from elder down. A bleak picture of the culminating disaster forthcoming is described by Watkins as he writes that "speculative capitalists are not re-investing in industry in North America [leading to] a disappearing entrepreneurial middle class...and declining wages" (pg. 24). The political term applied to this chain of events is neo-liberalism whereby it is required that "government withdraw[s] from much of its social service or "safety net" activity. The emergent task of the national government is to protect the new pyramided economic structure, protect private property, and control inflation, seen as the killer of an economy where financial speculation flourishes" (pg. 14). As government goes into this "protection" mode for those with power (coded whites), war must be waged against certain dangerous parts of society. Education is one of the most dangerous as it is one of the few change agents remaining. In this neoliberal world, a humanistic, socratic, interracial questioning education would be dangerous indeed. And so, as this books points out, war is being waged on universal public education and it is being done many times with the collusion of parts of society and even many teachers and teachers unions (pg. 97)! This book helped to crystallize for me many fragmented ideas I have had over the years since NCLB. I have told colleagues before that standardized tests are designed to discredit us. As a matter of fact, just last month a colleague said to me: "I think you're right about those tests, I think they just want to make us look bad". YES!!! Has it reached the point that we must put our fear behind us (as we have discussed in a number of our posts this semester) and go about the job of informing? Is it time for us to somehow become the "Paul Revere's" of our era and spread the word that something bad is coming? This book helped me to vocalize my feelings and in turn has helped me vocalize to my colleagues in a better, more cogent way and for that I am eternally greatful to Dr. He for having me read it. The work is before us and the stakes, as written is this book, could not be higher, let us truly go about the job of educating, and I don't just mean our students in our classes.

Power and Schooling Post
By Schizo Radio
Post: Watkins - Assault on Public Education
The crux of this book lies in the statement, "One of the major reasons for the continuation of dominant discourse and policies is that the very nature of our common sense about education is constantly being altered" (Watkins, 2004, p. x). I see this with the Richmond County School System when they constantly change the curriculum before anyone can fully grasp what has been mandated for implementation. This is not only an assault on education it is an assault on the minds of students, teachers, administrators; the public as a whole. Due to the fact that "Today's world is all about profit and wealth accumulation at any cost" (Watkins, 2004, p. 16), the greedy corporations are creating a world where people are simply slaves to a system. The question we should be asking is how do we get out of this new age slavery? The first thing we have to do is regain our common sense about education and realize that the big corporations see true education as a danger to their big profits and wealth.
Reply to Anthony Young - Watkins
When Watkins states that corporations are "fashioning a new America to conform to their economic and political ideology [by] employing the language of democracy and distress" why aren't we looking and asking ourselves what is the big picture? What is the agenda? When we do ask without the information put forth in this book then we are called conspiracy theorists. I, like you, have been talking to my colleagues for years saying the same things about education and many of them respond with, "Noooooo, they would never do that. That is a conspiracy theory." I would tell them to just sit back and watch then. I'm so glad Watkins wrote this book. The thing I like most about your post is that you use the word `us' in reference to people in society who are subject to these atrocities happening in the education system. So many times I get that it is a plot against blacks and the poor but I've always said the agenda is against people in society especially those who would dare to get an education to try and become change agents. There is an attack on education because as you stated the book points out that, "Education is one of the most dangerous as it is one of the few change agents remaining. In this neoliberal world, a humanistic, Socratic, interracial questioning education would be dangerous indeed." We certainly do need to sound the alarm and inform everyone before we all become too dumb to do anything but succumb to the agenda at hand.

Eye opening.
By John P. Cook
I feel ashamed at how ignorant I was before reading this book. The push for privatization/charter schools is happening right now, under our noses. Accountability and standardized testing have provided legislators (and their wealthy backers) with the leverage they need to dismantle public education. The thing that shook me the most is that I'd always looked at charter schools with ambivalence, maybe even somewhat positively. I fear that most Americans feel like I did before reading this book. I most identified with the Lipman chapter, because there was so little proselytizing, and because she seemed to cut to the heart of the matter. What has to be done, she writes, is that we must make this fight known to our communities by drawing on "ways in which these policies resonate with people's experiences and struggles" (51).

Also, I was pretty outraged by the Buras chapter about how the school system of New Orleans was essentially privatized immediately following Katrina. This was so bad for the many teachers who lost their jobs, but was (and is) also bad for the children of New Orleans. The author writes that "7,500...teachers and school employees were informed they'd be fired and lose health insurance" (176). In their place, charter schools hired cheaper, provisionally certified (more often White) teachers to replace the largely African American veteran teachers that were fired.

What really scared me was the ease and speed with which state and federal legislators swooped in (in Katrina's aftermath, amid all the confusion) and made these sweeping changes. This book made me fearful, especially in light of recent legislation that passed in my own state of Georgia, that allows for charter schools to be established even over the objection of democratically elected local school boards.
