Combs also critically examines four contemporary films—The Tao of Steve, A Bug’s Life, Antz, and Shrek—to amplify rhetorical Daoism, to indicate clear differences between Western and Daoist values, and to offer fresh perspectives on individuals and social action. The book argues that Daoism provides a lens for viewing limitations of current Western rhetorical theorizing, positioning Daoist rhetoric as a potent critical perspective in the contemporary, postmodern world.

A persuasive study of Daoist rhetoric

I recommend this book to any serious student of the Dao De Jing, and to any student of comparative philosophy and/or rhetoric. Combs positions himself as a scholar, but also as a follower of the Way-making described by the DDJ. He introduces us to categories of understanding of the underlying rhetoric of the DDJ, but also to what happens to the field of rhetoric when looked at through the lens of of the DDJ. We are introduced to the differences between dualistic/Western and unified/Eastern worldviews; between truth apprehended by reason and truth discerned by intuition and empathy.
Only 4 stars because the book is at times simplistic; Combs' thinking has not yet fully matured. I occasionally had difficulty sorting out the difference between genuine elucidation of conclusions that followed from his analysis of the text; and his own personal opinions.

Very Intelligentsia

This is a textbook for my Principles of Persuasion's class.It looks very difficult. We just started today (7/1/13) so I don't really know. From it I will be writing many papers regarding "forgiveness". This book arrived from the sellers in a couple days as I requested and in perfect condition.
