About the Author
George H. Fried was Professor of Biology at Brooklyn College. He taught courses in general biology and animal physiology during a 30-year teaching career.

George J. Hademenos is a former college physics professor. He has published in journals such as American Scientist and Physics Today. In addition he has authored two books: The Physics of Cerebrovascular Diseases, published by Springer-Verlag, and Schaum's Outline of Physics for Biology, Allied Health, and Pre-Med Students.

About the Author
Christopher Bram is the author of nine novels, including Father of Frankenstein, which was made into the Academy Award–winning movie Gods and Monsters, starring Ian McKellen. Bram grew up outside of Norfolk, Virginia, where he was a paperboy and an Eagle Scout. He graduated from the College of William and Mary in 1974 and moved to New York City in 1978. In addition to Father of Frankenstein, he has written numerous articles and essays. His most recent book, Eminent Outlaws: The Gay Writers Who Changed America, is a literary history. Bram was a Guggenheim Fellow in 2001, and in 2003, he received Publishing Triangle’s Bill Whitehead Award for Lifetime Achievement. He lives in Greenwich Village and teaches at New York University.

Poetic Essays by a Literary Master

Christopher Bram is such a gifted story teller that it would stand to reason that his ramblings about his own life and about such varied topics as Henry James, adolescent problems of deciding sexuality, the effect of AIDS on literature, gossip novels, etc. would be rich in anecdotes and humor and philosophy. But even appreciation of his depth of literary skills does not provide the reader of MAPPING THE TERRITORY with an adequate clue as to just how fine Bram writes essays such as these.

Much of the book falls into the autobiographical zone: 'Slow Learners' is an extended 'novella' of Bram's highschool, college, and grad school days as they molded his preference for friends in general and life partners in particular - an at times hilarious tale and at times tender and supportive guide to figuring out life as a young man. He also offers a rich essay on the books that influenced his own writing, books he reviews for the reader in a way that few other reviewers can. He shares his views of life in the Village in New York, revisits Larry Kramer's notorious novel 'Faggots', and delves into Oscar Wilde with a penchant for wit and concrete criticism.

Woven throughout this endlessly entertaining book is Christopher Bram's elegant use of the English language. Reading this collection adds to his stature as one of America's finest writers. A SPLENDID COLLECTION

Once again, Bram hits the mark. A wonderful journey into the head and heart of one of today's best writers.His immersion and observations prove to be a true odyssey through the gay culture of the last thirty years. Highly recommended.

Taking the readers relationship to the next level

When I gave up on other writers of his ilk such as Mr White and Mr Leavitt long ago, Mr Bram has been a consistently solid intelligent and intriguing story teller.

With the exception of "Gossip" (his least successful work in my view)the strength of his writing has matured and the relationship the reader has with the author has as well. "Dr August" is such a rich and rewarding novel, it ranks as one of my all time favorites. So reading this book with its personal insights through a series of essays was a test of 'our' relationship.

A test of whether we still engaged after 25 years 'together'. After a rocky start the conclusion was an affirmation. The essay on straight male novelists was frankly bizarre and boring. The one on Kramer's 'Faggots' was amusing and the lament of the demise of the Oscar Wilde bookshop resonated personally because I had visited it a number of times on trips to New York (from Australia) and was a saddened in June 2009 to turn up on the doorstep of...nothing. It had gone.

Having now 'met' Mr Bram though this book, having agreed and disagreed with him throughout, I can say that I like him, not just his books. I recommend this book to Mr Bram's readers to test the relationship and get more of the sense of the man who is one of the truly great story tellers of our time.

About the Author
Christa Craven is the chair of the Women’s, Gender & Sexuality Studies program and an assistant professor of anthropology and WGSS at the College of Wooster. She is the author of Pushing for Midwives: Homebirth Mothers and the Reproductive Rights Movement. Craven has also published articles for both scholarly and popular audiences on midwifery and reproductive rights activism in journals and newsletters such as Citizens for Midwifery News, American Anthropologist, Medical Anthropology Quarterly, Feminist Studies, and Feminist Formations. She is the former co-chair of the Society of Lesbian and Gay Anthropologists (now the Association for Queer Anthropology).

Dána-Ain Davis is the associate chair of the Graduate Program in Urban Studies at Queens College, City University of New York. Her work is predominately concerned with examining how people “live policy.” The issues that interest her include neoliberalism, poverty, race, gender, reproductive justice, domestic violence, and HIV/AIDS. Additionally, she also writes on activist/feminist anthropology. Davis is the author of Battered Black Women and Welfare Reform: Between a Rock and a Hard Place (2006) and contributing author to Beyond Reproduction: Women’s Health, Activism, and Public Policy by Karen Baird with Kimberly Christensen. Davis is the co-editor with Aimee Cox of Transforming Anthropology, the journal of the Association of Black Anthropologists, and serves as chair of the New York Foundation.

European comics artist Miguelanxo Prado describes his two life passions as "listening to and inventing stores, as well as painting." In this adaptation of the classic folk tale by Sergei Prokofiev, Prado combines these passions into a glorious work of art. The soft, shadowy colors give this redition of Peter and the Wolf the look of something from another time and place. The book begins with two full-page paintings. The first is Peter, the duck, the cat, and the bird staring into the dark woods; the point of view is from behind them, with the reader staring into the woods with them. Turn the page and you'll see the same scene from the opposite point of view, from within the woods, looking out at them. The depiction is powerfully stirring, and as Prado himself says in his introduction: "While folk tales are usually meant for children, they nonetheless possess a fascinating, evocative power for adults." Whether Peter and the Wolf is for you or your child, Prado's version is a great addition to your bookshelf.

Prokofiev's orchestral tale, also retold this season by Selena Hastings (Forecasts, Sept. 11), here has a simple text and provocative illustrations that seem perfectly directed to the temperament and perception of young readers. As Peter steps out of the garden gate, the bird is introduced to the story, then the duck, the cat, the grandfather and,finally, the wolf. Of course, it is Peter's fearless feat brings this tale to its heroic finale. Portraying the action are Palecek's primitive formsbold shapes, odd perspectives and boisterous colorswhich give this an upbeat appeal. Ages 4-8.

Grade 1-6 Five mechanical tableaux dramatize Peter's adventure with the wolf. The first shows Peter's cabin in the forest; the second, the capture of the duck by the wolf; the third, the wolf's capture by Peter; the fourth, the procession of the townspeople back to town with the wolf; and fifth, the wolf in the zoo. The thinness of the story is evident in that a very small amount of page space is alotted to text. The full-color scenes in what appear to be watercolors or acrylics remain theatrical backdrops for the story and lack sufficient detail to encourage close scrutiny by children. The two well-engineered "capture" scenes are entertaining because they help advance the plot. Curiously, no mention is ever made of a musical accompaniment to the story. I grew up on this illustration and it has been very difficult to find but it was worth all the trouble for my son to be able to grow up with THIS version! Illustration does not get better than this, it is both classic and easy for a child to relate with without being "cartoony". Magnificent!

Peter and the Wolf connects!

A spectacular visual accompaniment to the music and narration! Beautiful pictures. My 2-year-old daughter asks for the music by name and sits down looking at the book while she listens to the instruments, pointing out the different animals/characters when she hears the different instruments appear. I never imagined she'd be learning words for "oboe" and "clarinet" at this point, never mind their sounds, but she is entranced and easily goes back and forth between the music, the story, and the different instruments and characters.

A great book for little people who love music!

Our children, 3 year old twins, love the music of Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf. In searching for an age appropriate book to show them the musical instruments that play each of the characters, we found this one illustrated by Ian Beck. Not only are the illustrations lovely, the colors and clothing of Peter, the hunters and the grandfather are interesting to a child. Also, each page shows the instrument played for that part of the story (find it in the box around the text), and in the back a page illustrates each instrument. We cannot recommend this lovely book enough to parents of young children discovering the beauty of music!

Reading for Liberalism argues that Harte, the magazine’s founding editor, and the other members of the Overland group critiqued and reimagined the often invisible fabric of American freedom. Reading for Liberalism uncovers and examines in the text of the Overland Monthly the relationship between wilderness, literature, race, and the production of individual freedom in late nineteenth-century California.

Although "apathetic" or "unenthusiastic" may be the first definitions that come to mind, in a juridical context the notion of "disinterest" is positive, a guarantee that the decision maker in a dispute is unbiased and not slanting rulings or playing favorites. Without this virtuous form of disinterest, a truly just system of dispute resolution is not possible. Kasper, who also serves as a municipal judge, has written a multifaceted study of the various settings in which impartiality is a core value in Anglo-American law. After a brief introduction tracking the evolution of impartiality from the 1215 adoption of the Magna Carta, Kasper explores the concept of unbiased decision making by juries, judges, and quasi-judicial actors or bodies. The next 13 chapters are organized as examinations of forums for impartiality--some examples are "death-qualified" juries, judges with financial stakes in the outcomes of cases, and medical license reviews--each viewed through the prism of a specific US Supreme Court decision. Kasper is an associate professor of political science for the University of Wisconsin Colleges and serves as the municipal judge in Rice Lake, Wisconsin, where he lives with his wife Julie and their two children, Madison and Jackson.
