to build a model city and power canal. The neighborhood emerged in the 1970s as an environmental nightmare and harbinger of the worldwide hazardous waste crisis. Photographs in Love Canal tell the story of the community's early development and the subsequent use of the canal by Hooker Electrochemical Company to discard industrial chemical waste from 1942 to 1953. In the late 1970s, the seemingly dormant dump began to leak, and residents found themselves in a slowly unfolding nightmare, learning that the waste dumped in the canal decades before was not simply garbage but actually a toxic brew of dangerous chemicals that were hazardous to life, health, and property.

Penelope Ploughman, PhD, JD, is a sociologist and attorney who has researched the Love Canal tragedy extensively. She has written several articles on the topic of Love Canal and a dissertation at SUNY Buffalo on the role of the newspaper media in the Love Canal disaster.

Nice pictorial

I like these series of books a lot. As the saying goes: "pictures or it didn't happen!" To me it's better to have pictures to go along with the story, they make it really come alive. This book portrays the story of what was to be one of the greatest technological marvels of the time, but it never came to fruition. Instead, a man's dream and legacy became one of the worst environmental disasters of our time. This book shows the early industrial use of the nigara falls area, the conceptual drawings and maps of the canal, the failure of Love's idea and subsequent purchase of his land for a waste dump all the way up to the present day. A picture is worth a thousand words, as they say, and the story portrayed here is very sad, emotional and heartbreaking. I can't even begin to imagine what it was like to have been through that.

very sad ending to it all ~~~~~~

I'm from the Buffalo N.Y. and had friends who lived on 97th. street in the middle of the "Love Canal" area....I can't find the right word's to describe this "TRAGETY"....reading the book....the sale statement from Hooker Chemical said it all....the city of Niagara Falls """"WAS"""" aware of chemicals in the ground....they sold the land to build new homes with owners not made aware of the problem....ver,very sad ending to it all ~~~~~~
