Beautifully Illustrated, Kids Love It.

Beautifully illustrated in mixed media with superb detail and lots of little "hidden" things to spot. I wish more children's books were this beautiful with their illustrations, the kids love it.
The only thing I wish is that it was longer because it's such a pleasure to look at and read.
Credentials: Father of twin toddlers who get about a dozen different books read to them daily.

Insightful and engaging

An important and surprisingly engaging book. Like most other Americans, I'd bought into the idea that the 2008 crash was caused by out-of-control bankers and mortgage brokers, and elaborate, opaque financial products. Richards makes a compelling case that the blame lies elsewhere -- largely with government policy -- and therefore the legislative "solutions" thundering down on us are actually setting us up for an even worse crisis. His portraits and stories of key players in our ongoing national drama are eye-opening and fresh. He also offers some commonsense solutions to the mess we're in. Highly recommended.

A Must-Read for Defenders of the American Experiment

I have read this cover to cover and can say without reservation that this is a hugely engaging and ground-breaking book, a must-read for anyone interested in our country's slide into statism. While we've been focused on Obamacare and the runaway debt, an unholy marriage of Democrats, do-gooders and well-heeled Wall Street insiders looking to tilt the playing field unfairly in their favor are posing perhaps an even greater threat to the American Experiment.

For those who follow free market writers closely, it's well known that government interventions in the financial markets, rather than too much economic freedom, fueled the housing bubble and paved the way to the subsequent housing collapse and financial crisis. Infiltrated beautifully summarizes this important reality in a single chapter, but it's in two other areas where I find the book a must-read. The first is the book's often novel-like descriptions of the characters and tactics that led from small beginnings to the Leviathan creature that is Dodd-Frank. Understanding the opposition -- their strategies and appeal, their cynicisms and idealism -- is crucial to mounting a successful counterattack.

The second reason I find the work a must-read for defenders of American liberty is the way it explains how activists and politicians have used the financial crisis to double down on precisely the big-government hyper-regulatory "solutions" that got us into the financial crisis in the first place.

The book explains all of this with the sort of accessible, engaging prose that characterized Richards' previous bestseller, Indivisible. The new book goes on to lay out a highly practical blueprint for mounting a successful counteroffensive. Read Infiltrated and let other know about it. Ignorance is only bliss for the insiders and activists who hold the keys to kingdom of crony socialism that they are quietly building right under our noses.

Important Book!

This book is sure to become an important part of the national conversation! I expect we'll see this author arguing his perspective on major televison shows very soon, and I look forward to it. Jay Richards easy style and intense research makes this book perfect for leading us through the morass of issues surrounding the financial crisis. The intriguing stories right from the beginning make it a pleasure to read. And least we be fooled, Richards makes sure we understand that the cause of this catastrophe is still alive and well and hiding in plain sight.This is an important book for all who want to see a brighter future.

Got this for my little niece who lives in the US (my brother is Canadian, sister-in-law American and they are living in the US). They loved it! My brother wants to make sure she knows about her Canadian side and this book makes it fun for little kids to appreciate their Northern heritage.

For people working/interested in this field this is a very nice book. It covers pretty much all relevant aspects of this field. I do think that there is significant overlap between chapters, especially between chapters 3 and 4.

What the Heart Wants was a nice surprise for this reader. It took me quite a few starts before finally sitting down and committing to the story and I'm happy to have done so.

Author Alicia Dean is a self-proclaimed, obsessed Vampire Diaries' fan and that was clear throughout this novella. She treated her characters with the care one would expect from an author who didn't create them, but is highly invested in them nonetheless. She knows these characters and captures their voices so clearly that at times they jump right off the page.

Dean made the commitment following the 15th episode of season four not to watch another episode until she'd completed this story. As a huge TVD fan, that's big deal, especially as the season was rushing towards it's climax. But, in order to write her own story, Dean takes the plunge and it truly pays off. What the Heart Wants could've just as easily been the path season four took and I would've enjoyed it immensely.

Dean incorporates all of the show's characters, yet never forgets that Elena Gilbert is the heart and soul of the show. Her Elena is nicely written and actually returns to the girl we haven't seen in awhile: a young woman who doesn't allow everyone else to make decisions for her and is capable of taking charge of her life even when faced with overwhelming adversity.

I gave this four stars rather than five due to some continuity issues with the show's canon. Otherwise, I highly recommend this and look forward to the next book in the series, Divine Enemy.

Very true to what fans of the show would like

I was interested in this book because it was a full ensemble cast rewrite of Season 4, and for the most part, I really enjoyed it. The author did a good job of capturing the unique voice of each character, which is no small feat with a cast this large. She also wrote a plot that was JUST LIKE the kinds of things they do on the show- lots of shifting alliances based on the motivations of the moment, plans within plans, most of which go wrong in some way or another, more than a little double crossing. All of that was well done, and the writing was clean and undistracting.

The reason it got 4 stars rather than 5 from me is really subjective and I hesitated to say it is a universal reaction rather than just a personal quirk. Either way, I didn't feel particularly emotionally connected to the characters or the storyline. Despite clear character motivations, it felt a touch mechanical and plot driven rather than character driven. There were a lot of mistakes with detail work in comparison to the show but that didn't bother me much. I didn't particularly believe Elena's reaction at the end of the book, though. It felt like a very strange reaction to Jeremy's death when applied to her feelings for Damon and Stefan. Either way, this was a good read, well done, but not one that was close to my heart.

Vampire Diaries fans gotta read this!

What I liked about this book, is that I felt like I was watching a Vampire Diaries episode inside my head because the author nailed the characters' personality traits and dialogue perfectly.

Not only did she do a great job bringing Elena, Damon, Stefan, Caroline, Bonnie, Rebekah and the ruthless Katherine to life, but Klaus in this book is the same as he is in the TV show - sexy and dangerous! You can almost hear Klaus' accent when you are reading his dialogue!

The author explains in the foreword that her story takes place after Season 4, Episode 15, where Damon turns off Elena's humanity. The book reads like a full episode, and of course, leaves you hanging for more Vampire Diaries!

I especially enjoyed Stefan's and Rebekah's storyline in this book.
