So ist das mit vollmundigen Versprechungen...

... weicht das Eingehaltene vom Vesprochenen ab, wird der durch das Versprechen Motivierte ... grummelig bis ungehalten, was ich hiermit nicht infrage stellen möchte!
(Das Buch habe ich mir ausgesucht, nachdem ich einige extrem enttäuschte Leserstimmen, sprich negative Bewertungen, gelesen hatte. Will heißen: Meine Erwartungen hatte ich vor dem Lesen vornherein heruntergeschraubt... )

Ich habe mich durch die Lektüre nun auch nicht direkt an das (geliebte) Downton Abbey von Julian Fellowes erinnert gefühlt, dazu fehlten mir die liebevollen oder schrullig -intelligenten Figuren und Dialoge zu sehr. Doch an Dramatik, Intrigen und Leidenschaft zu Rivalitäten mangelt es nicht.
Mithin habe ich eine Weile benötigt um die Figuren voneinander zu trennen, bzw. kam mir alles etwas zusammenhangslos vor und die übliche Überforderung, wenn zu hastig zu viele Figuren in Erscheinung treten. Auch einige als Längen empfundene Passagen waren zu verschmerzen, denn der Ansporn (als Leser) herauszufinden, was es mit dem kleines Mädchen auf sich hat, das spurlos verschwand ist riesig.
Manchmal erscheint mir die Neugier und das Interesse an dem verschwundenen Mädchen größer als das ihrer eigenen Familie ...
Indes wird ihre größere Schwester, die zunächst etwas blasse Charlotte, zur Protagonistin, die vermutlich ein dunkles Geheimnis hütet?

Der Roman war spannend, da gibt's mal nix und wenn ein nächster Teil erscheint, bin ich wieder dabei. Und wenn ich ehrlich bin, dann sehe ich große Chancen, dass ein Roman wie dieser als Vorlage für eine BBC- oder ITV-Verfilmung dienen könnte...

About the Author
David Shubert, PhD, is Dean of the Undergraduate Studies, Professor of Chemistry, and Director of Learning Assessment at Newman University in Kansas, USA. Dr. Shubert co-teaches Chemistry and Physics course for Nurse Anesthesia with co-author Dr. Leyba. He has taught this combined course for over ten years. Dr. Shubert serves as a Peer Evaluator for the Higher Learning Commission and has served as chemical consultant to industry in a variety of capacities. He has served as an expert witness, and has consulted on topics ranging from the custom synthesis of chemicals, to the development of a recycling system. Dr. Shubert is the recipient of twelve grants including several focusing on improving science education and one large grant ($0.5 M) from the National Science Foundation. He has written a multi-media text (CD-ROM) for Organic Chemistry, which has been picked up by Cengage Learning as an on-line electronic textbook, and has published journal articles in the Journal of the American Chemical Society and the Journal of Chemical Education. Dr. Shubert's teaching and leadership has been acknowledged multiple times through awards for excellence in teaching (1984, 1995, 2004) and awards for developing outstanding institutional programmes (2007 & 2008). John Leyba, PhD, is Associate Professor of Chemistry and the Chair of the Division of Science and Math at Newman University in Wichita, KS, USA where he has taught Chemistry and Physics since 2002. In addition, Dr. Leyba teaches in the Sonography and Nurse Anesthesia Programs at Newman. Dr. Leyba previously taught at Clemson University (SC) and has worked in industry for Westinghouse Savannah River Company (SC), both as Sr. Scientist and Principal Scientist, and at Canberra Industries (CO) as Director of Operations and Data Management. He is the recipient of multiple awards, including the AAUP Academic Freedom Award (2006), the Newman University Scholarship and Publication Award (2006 & 2009), the Newman University Teaching Excellence Award (2005), the Newman University Special Institution Achievement Award (2010), the Newman University Nurse Anesthesia Program Outstanding Didactic Instructor Award (2009 & 2011), and the Pfizer Fellowship in Chemistry, among others. He has published 29 peer-reviewed articles (research) and 22 technical reports (industry).

Well written, but clearly way out of focus for the target audience - SRNAs. As the authors have certainly never delivered an anesthetic and likely never been in an OR; it is understandably difficult for them to write a book relevant to the practice of anesthesia. Nice review of math, chemistry and physics, but a student's study time could be much better used with other resources.

Wordy and Confusing

Wordy and confusing. Not a good book for students. There are exercise questions at the end of each chapter which are good, and the answerws are in the back of the book for you to check your work. But the content itself is not explained very well at all. There are videos on line that are referenced in the book, but they are mostly useless to the content and very unprofessional looking. Very disappointed in this book.

About the Author
Joseph Hansen (1923–2004) was an American author of mysteries. The son of a South Dakota shoemaker, he moved to a California citrus farm with his family in 1936. He began publishing poetry in the New Yorker in the 1950s, and joined the editorial teams of gay magazines ONE and Tangents in the 1960s. Using the pseudonyms Rose Brock and James Colton, Hansen published five novels and a collection of short stories before the appearance of Fadeout (1970), the first novel published under his own name.    The book introduced street-smart insurance investigator Dave Brandstetter, a complex, openly gay hero who grew and changed over the series’s twelve novels. By the time Hansen concluded the series with A Country of Old Men (1990), Brandstetter was older, melancholy, and ready for retirement. The 1992 recipient of the Private Eye Writers of America’s Lifetime Achievement Award, Hansen published several more novels before his death in 2004.

One of Hansen's Most Memorable Titles

At one time The Los Angels Times described Joseph Hasen (1923-2004) as "the most exciting and effective writer of the classic California private-eye novel working today." Hansen's best-known works are a series of twelve novels written between 1970 and 1992 that feature insurance claims investigator Dave Brandstetter, a tough, no-nonsense detective--who also happens to be homosexual and is utterly unconcerned about that fact.

All Hansen novels possess a lean, driving prose, meticulously rendered characters, and plots that are a shade too plausible for comfort, and SKINFLICK is among the best. Originally published in 1979, the book finds Brandstetter investigating the death of Gerald Dawson, a holier-than-thou Christian who doesn't stint at delivering "God's Justice" in vigilante style--and who is found with his neck broken in his own drive way.

Pornography store owner Lon Tooker, whose shop was vandalized by Dawson and his cohorts, is the obvious suspect, but Brandstetter has his doubts, and his investigation runs the gamut from pornographers to preachers as he searches for a sixteen year old named Charleen who just might have all the answers. Along the way he receives assistance from a very unlikely source: Randy Van, a sometimes porno performer with a gender-bending style. Hansen's novels are often witty in covert ways, and this may well outrank his other works on that particular score--but its the detective work of this knock-you-flat tough book that keeps the pages turning. Strongly recommended.

A brisk, hardboiled mystery populated by a cast of caricatures

This is my first Joseph Hansen mystery and it was published in 1979; I read it as 2015 drew to a close. I’m of an age that can recognize the issues that the author found personally compelling as the ‘70s drew to a close: the 10th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, the emergence of a militant religious right, anti-gay legislation in Florida – and as a subtext, the soon-to-expand film-based “poor-gnaw-gru-fee” industry, with video waiting in the wings. The misspelling is deliberate so my review can escape being non-posted for use of the "P" - word.

THE GOOD: Joseph Hansen is an accomplished plotter, moving from one Southern California setting (and into the Central Valley) to the next as he enters the world(s) – people and places – that become the realm in which P.I. Dave Brandstetter will find the culprit and motive for two murders.

Hansen is adept at quickly establishing vivid caricatures of his dramatis personae and they register immediately in the reader’s mind. His various locales – seedy Hollywood, the Sunset Strip, and Marina del Rey – come to life in bold sketchy strokes. If you like the hard-boiled detective genre, Hansen knows how to set the tone and move it along. Personally, my appreciation for hard-boiled mysteries is rather mixed.

THE NOT SO GOOD: This reader came away from the 192 pages not sure he really knew who Dave Brandstetter was. And for me this was a weakness in the book. I want more humanity in my characters and found very little of it to move the needle in the novel’s emotional register. Yes, the dialogue is smart, salty and sardonically witty, but who are the people that speak it? This may mean the reader might not care enough about Brandstetter as the danger to him mounts at the book’s close. It was hard to sympathize with this character, though I wanted to. The way too occasional elements of backstory certainly could be filled in for a more empathetic character.

Further, as the climax unfolds, it does so at a rapid and delirious pace; the reader will find Brandstetter’s capacity to arise from very serious and recent injuries to pursue the killer across 200 miles a straining of credulity. This also contributed to making the ending seem forced and abrupt.

THE UGLY: Fundamentalist Christians are the only religiously-motivated characters in this story, and they are either hypocritical, sexually troubled, or violently psychopathic. At the time of his writing the novel, no doubt the once-closeted Hansen was infuriated by the homophobia of Anita Bryant and her Florida-based activism and the rise of moralizing televangelists like Jerry Falwell and Jimmy Swaggart. While his animus is understandable, his penchant for gross caricature doesn't help when he depicts the widow of a murdered preacher as a stern matriarch who grimly lurches about because of a stroke disability. Her murdered husband, a Hollywood movie equipment supplier, vandalized a “poor-gnaw-gru-fee” bookstore as a kind of masked avenger -- all the while being secretly attracted to “nymphets” and child “poor-gnaw-gru-fee”.

In addition, Hansen seems to have a special contempt for attractive straight adolescents and young adults who he routinely portrays as tanned, lithe, promiscuous and empty-headed. The author appears to resent them for wasting their vigorous youth, and therefore they must be callow, undeserving of their "unearned" physical robustness and beauty. Did the middle-aged Hansen - he was 55 when this was published - become a souring queen as he aged? One wonders.

a competent and different kind of mystery novel..

'Skinflick' is my first foray into the world of Joseph Hansen and his Dave Brandstetter series. From the back jacket I expected an L.A.-based crime story with the lead character being an insurance investigator. Yes, I got this. But I didn't realize until I was way into the book that Dave Brandstetter is a gay insurance investigator, a tough guy no less. What I like is the way the author doesn't turn this element of the character into a major element of the story. No stereotypes, nothing cheap or taudry. And the story, about the death of a self-righteous and hypocritical family man, was also quite decent. Enthralling? Well, no. But quite alright, certainly in line with what the more popular authors pump out.

Bottom line: a good read. I look forward to reading other installments of the Dave Brandstetter series.

Great lesson on playing together nicely - adorably presented.

It is quite the sour little pig and rabbit on the front cover, pouting just like a couple of kids who haven't yet learned how to iron out their differences while playing together. Is there a more perfect book for a couple of squabbling siblings? Probably not.

Little pig careens across the grass with the wagon, toys spilling from the sides. His rabbit friend cautions him that he's going too fast, but pig doesn't care. After some heated back and forth shouting, the friends decide they are better off not playing together at all.

Each thinks he will be happier on his own, and they make a point of stating all the fun activities that can be done solo. Rabbit can read alone, and pig can cook just fine with no help at all.You don't need a partner for dress-up and it's perfectly fine to play a musical instrument solo or go to the park alone.

There are tons of things you can do by yourself .... but aren't those things more fun with your best friend? Pig and rabbit are struck by this realization at the same time. Books are funnier when you can share the humor, and cookies taste better with a friend enjoying them by your side. Best of all, made up games the require imagination are double the fun when fueled by two brains.

This is a perfect book for young children. The words are very simple, as are the illustrations. The lesson is clear cut and easy to understand. Fight, fight, fight ... sad pig, sad rabbit. But look at those broad smiles and the fun they have when they both make an effort to get along.

Don't Go "Without" This Lovely Book...

This is a deceptively simple story. After my first read through I thought, "Hmmmm, that wasn't too exciting." But then I read it with my six year old and realized what a pitch perfect story it is for that age group. The author has zeroed in on an entirely age-appropriate way to model conflict resolution. The fact that the illustrations are enormously appealing, is just a great, big bonus.

The pig and the bunny are the best of friends and love to do everything together, but they have exact opposite personalities. The pig is apparently carefree and the bunny is very careful. (Note: the bunny and the pig are never named in the story) At the start, the bunny can't take the pig's carelessness and doesn't want to play anymore. The pig says that's quite all right, I won't even miss you. The next few pages are about all the things they can do without each other, until they both realize all the activities are better shared together. They reconcile that they are very different, but that is what makes their friendship so special. A heady message for young children, but a crucial one as they are navigating the social scene that is pre-school and kindergarten.

This book is simply adorable! I love the interaction between bunny and piggy, both making expressions and acting out in ways all children will relate to when they're having a tiff with a best friend.
