A joy to see an Andrew Garve book available for Kindle!

Andrew Garve was a British journalist who wrote many mysteries and adventure stories. Many are set in a cold war Russia that Garve knew well. This one is set in London in the 1950s and thoroughly reflects attitudes of that time. Max Easterbrook returns to London to discover his friend George Lambert has been arrested for the murder of his wife Hilda. Max needs to track down who has killed Hilda who on the face of things had no life and no enemies. Max discovers that Hilda was a thoroughly unpleasant person to be around and wonders how his very nice friend George put up with her. Initially, the murder appears to be suicide but the police soon see through this and arrest George on what appears to be compelling evidence. Max is racing against the clock to find out who really murdered Hilda before the trial. Garve's book are plot-driven and hook you into the action. Most are more adventure than mystery, though this one is whodunnit. Fun to read but in no way deep literature. This is not Garve's best but is very entertaining.

Garve is an author I read years ago. I do not remember Hilda from then. However, good, entertaining story. Recommended.

Garve is certainly one of the best of the British mystery-crime -thriller genre

Garve is certainly one of the best of the British mystery-crime -thriller genre. All of his books hang together well with the characters well drawn and the plots consistiently interesting. However, Garve does not stick to a formula, but each book has a somewhat different structure. No Tears for Hilda shows Garve's meticulous eye for detail and psychological interest.
