Glacier National Park is a majestic million acres of towering mountains, ancient glaciers, and amazing biodiversity. Located astride both the Continental Divide and Hudson Bay Divide, Glacier contains Triple Divide Peak, the only point in North America from which the waters drain into three oceans. The land that George Bird Grinnell called the "Crown of the Continent" and that John Muir described as "the best care-killing scenery on the continent" has been
delighting visitors since well before it was set aside as a park in 1910. Through the years, countless people have come to Glacier to hike its nearly thousand miles of trails, marvel at its unrivalled scenery, and drive the Going-to-the-Sun Road, America's most spectacular alpine highway. Glacier is also home to remote mountain chalets and magnificent grand lodges. While most national parks have a singular signature lodge, Glacier has three.

Great pictures of Glacier NAtional Park
By Richard
I grew up in Glacier National Park and this book is full of pictures which reminded me of what a wonderful place it was to spend my childhood. My great grandfather was in charge of construction of the Great Northern Railway through Marias Pass in the 1890s and our family has lived in Browning, 15 miles west of the park ever since. We had a cabin just off the ninth hole of the East Glacier Park Hotel and used to search for golf balls to sell back to the club house.

San Francisco, California (Images of America), by Patricia Kennedy

On January 30, 1847, the small harbor village of Yerba Buena was rechristened "San Francisco." As the Gold Rush quickly propelled the population to over 50,000, fortunes made in the silver Comstock lode and the railroad transformed the area into the financial and cultural center of the West. Captured here in over 200 vintage images are the life and times of the city's earliest residents and their livelihoods. Spanning the mid-1800s through the early decades of the 20th century, this book offers a visual account of early life in San Francisco, from family outings at Golden Gate Park, to the images of San Franciscans rebuilding their city after the devastating Earthquake and Fire of 1906. Also pictured are the joyous occasions, including the Panama-Pacific Exposition of 1915, the openings of the Bay and Golden Gate Bridges, and the 1939 World's Fair. Early views of the city's landmarks capture the magic of the Bay area, such as the Ferry Depot, Nob Hill, turn of the century Chinatown, and Fisherman's Wharf.

This Book Has Interesting Historic Information Of San Francisco.
By William
This book has interesting information and interesting historic photos. Here is some of the interesting information that the book mentions: The tiny village of Yerba Buena was renamed San Francisco in 1847. The Flood Building was designed in 1906 at the corner of Market & Powell Street and named for James C. Flood. There are pictures of the 1906 Earthquake. There is a picture of deep fissures opened in a street. The San Francisco City Hall building crumbled in less than a minute. Many survived the earthquake, but found their homes uninhabitable. Nearly half of the city's population was left homeless. The city parks provided refugee camps where tents and shelters were erected. The Bank of Italy was the first bank to reopen after the disaster. The Fairmont Hotel was named for U.S. Senator James G. Fair. The Clift Hotel was built by lawyer Fred Clift in 1915. There are pictures of the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco.

Review
"A charming story of magical realism. Well-sketched characters and short chapters that often end on ambiguous notes will engage readers. While period and setting are left vague, the narrator's elegant asides and wry commentary imbue the novel with an old-fashioned air reminiscent of Lemony Snicket's 'A Series of Unfortunate Events.' The Trogens breathe new life into the old trope of the plucky orphan in dire straits." --School Library Journal

A good read
By Cathy
Very nice story about a young orphan girl who finds herself in an orphanage that looks lovely on the outside, but is quite different within. Not a scary tale, just a good adventure. Teaching girls and boys to have faith in themselves and to work together to change their situation for the better.

Perfect First Novel for Children
By Emily Anne
This is a beautiful book, full of suspense and adventure and danger on every page, but also moments of mystifying quiet. It's a story in which the fate of everything rests on the wings of moths. Original, captivating, revolving around a struggle against absolute cruelty in a place that feels at once incredibly real and familiar, and also fantastical, with a narrator whose voice at times carries the same humorous and delightful qualities of J.M. Barrie. Even the villain, The Switch as they call her, has moments of sympathy and understanding. I hope this will be the first chapter book that my son or daughter reads. It is told with a sincerity and simplicity and attention to language that sometimes I find is lacking in other children's novels. It does not talk down to its readers even though many chapters begin with a straightforward lesson on vocabulary; this story was written with a definite respect for the intuitive knowledge of its young audience. I read it in one sitting, gripped by the turns in plot. It's the most original orphan story I have read since Anne of Green Gables.

Margaret and the Moth Tree
By Maxine Holmes
Margaret and the Moth Tree by Kari Trogen and Brit Trogen

Kari and Brit Trogen created a story for children that is pregnant with life lessons. In my opinion every child should be exposed to Margaret and the Moth Tree before the age of 10 as a fantastic read-aloud book. In Margaret and the Moth Tree these two talented authors paint a crystal clear picture of the world through the eyes, the emotions of a little girl named Margaret Grey.
Margaret and the Moth Tree will engage every reader or listener perhaps giving them a sense of gratefulness for the things they have. Margaret's life from being a toddler to third grade was traumatic. It is a page turner and I could not put this book down. Margaret and the Moth Tree touches the heart and lends itself to many discussions of pain, sorrow, happiness, evil and loving people and the important influence these issues shaped Margaret and shape all humans.

Margaret Grey's life starts out not being wanted but tolerated by adults in her family however as she grows Margaret develops into a imaginative, sensitive, intelligent girl. I appreciate the collaborative effort making Margaret a strong girl with the tenacity of a warrior.

Thank you, Kari and Brit Trogen for cultivating Margaret's complex life and putting it on the printed page for all readers or listeners to enjoy, bond with and adore. There aren't enough adjectives for me to clearly convey how this story changed my outlook on life's bumps in the road. Margaret and the Moth Tree speaks to the development of one's character regardless of age, heritage and location.

The role of government in the demise of streetcars.
By akos@best.com
An excellent treatise on the demise of privately owned transit companies is The Motorization of American Cities by David St. Clair, a professor of economics. Mr. St. Clair details how government was largely responsible for the streetcars demise: large taxes (percent of revenue and others); requirements for street paving (6% of revenue in LA) that only benefited the competition; snow removal from street (where applicable); hostility of public staff to private companies; regulation that required uniform fares (could not lower it for heavily used lines), often forced streetcars to subsidize buses, proscribed routes and service, and sometimes even specified inefficient 2-man operation (one man to collect tickets) for streetcars (but not for buses); government subsidized freeways that severed many streetcar lines without compensation for rerouting; the pro-automobile bias of government in street usage (e.g., one-way streets that discourage bicycle and transit usage, including buses); the terms of a renewed franchise (many expired in 1930s) often specified cancellation by government on short (sometimes 90 day) notice (and made risky further investment in streetcar tracks); the Public Holding Company Act (became effective in 1938) forced the sale of many transit companies (for example, the Sacramento transit company which was then bought by Pacific City Lines, a GM "front", in 1938); and finally, the franchise itself prevented another transit company from competing and enabled National City Lines and other GM "front" companies to liquidate streetcar technology (by substituting inferior buses) and prevented competition by much more efficient electric technology that then (after the takeovers) was not allowed to compete. The highest price offered for this legal right to exclusively provide transit (the franchise) was by the one that would profit the most: GM.
The author also details and documents how the interstate highway system (that has primarily an urban purpose in terms of usage), and laws involving government with the highway business, were primarily planned by and lobbied for by the automobile manufacturers, who faced a saturating car market (most car sales were replacements in the 1930s), and wanted to expand into the urban market (where most families did not own cars). The author laments the amount of leverage that business groups can exert on government.
The book is extensively documented by footnotes.

The Man Everybody Was Afraid Of (The Dave Brandstetter Mysteries Book 4), by Joseph Hansen

In the small town of La Caleta, Dave Brandstetter investigates the murder of a very unpopular cop
When Ben Orton’s head is found bludgeoned by a heavy flower pot, the people of La Caleta are stunned—not because their police chief has been murdered, but because no one thought to do it sooner. A bruising, violent man, Ben had a commitment to order that did not always take the law into account. But as insurance investigator Dave Brandstetter is about to find out, the corruption in Ben’s police force did not die with him. By the time Dave arrives in the fading fishing town, a young activist has already been arrested for the murder. Only Dave seems to care that the evidence against the accused is laughably thin. As the people of La Caleta try their best to thwart his investigation, Dave must do whatever it takes to catch Ben’s killer.  The Man Everybody Was Afraid Of is book four in the Dave Brandstetter Mystery series, which also includes Troublemaker and Skinflick.

“A fine introduction to the work of Joseph Hansen.” —The New York Times “After forty years, Hammett has a worthy successor.” —The Times (London) “An excellent craftsman, a compelling writer.” —The New Yorker

About the Author
Joseph Hansen (1923–2004) was an American author of mysteries. The son of a South Dakota shoemaker, he moved to a California citrus farm with his family in 1936. He began publishing poetry in the New Yorker in the 1950s, and joined the editorial teams of gay magazines ONE and Tangents in the 1960s. Using the pseudonyms Rose Brock and James Colton, Hansen published five novels and a collection of short stories before the appearance of Fadeout (1970), the first novel published under his own name.    The book introduced street-smart insurance investigator Dave Brandstetter, a complex, openly gay hero who grew and changed over the series’s twelve novels. By the time Hansen concluded the series with A Country of Old Men (1990), Brandstetter was older, melancholy, and ready for retirement. The 1992 recipient of the Private Eye Writers of America’s Lifetime Achievement Award, Hansen published several more novels before his death in 2004.

The Man Everybody Was Afraid Of
By Ricky N.
"The Man Everybody Was Afraid Of" is the fourth novel in a series of mystery novels by Joseph Hansen featuring gay insurance investigator Dave Brandstetter. Hansen wrote 12 of these novels from 1970-1992, and they are among some of the best written books in mystery fiction. The gay issue is handled matter-of-factly and these novels are mysteries that just happen to feature a gay detective. The man in the title is Ben Orton, police chief of La Caleta, California. This man made a lot of ememies, especially hippies, homosexuals, and blacks. Ben Orton is found dead having his head bashed in by a flower pot. Gay activist Cliff Kerlee is charged with the murder, but Dave feels he did not do it. Before he can give Mrs. Orton an insurance check, he must find out who really murdered Ben Orton. Dave finds a lot of resistance in La Caleta as he tries to find the real killer. This novel is not my favorite in the series, but is important to the series as it introduces readers to Cecil Harris who becomes Dave's partner in subsequent books. It is another good novel in this ground breaking series.

Good, not great, Brandstetter
By Randall Ivey
The fourth entry in Hansen's Brandstetter series finds Dave investigating the murder of a small town sheriff,Ben Orton, hated by many and feared by all. On the face of it, it appears rabid gay activist Cliff Kurlee is responsible for Orton's death, but Brandstetter's continuing probe leads him to other ideas.
This isn't as compelling as the four previous books in the series, but compared to the competition in the gay mystery field, it is pure champagne. All the trademarks are there: scalpel-sharp characterization and dialogue, perfect renderings of place and atmosphere, and Dave Brandstetter himself, of course, a solid character by any standard of detective fiction. This book also introduces Dave's new love interest, Cecil Harris, a young black student and TV newsworker who helps Dave crack the case.

Lively and exciting read.

Brandstetter, a gay middle-aged insurance investigator, doesn't believe a gay activist in Southern California killed a "red-neck" sheriff. Turning over stones, he tracks down the real murderer.

The Stories of Frederick Busch, by Frederick Busch

A selection of short stories from a twentieth-century “American master” (Dan Cryer, Newsday).

A contemporary of Ann Beattie and Tobias Wolff, Frederick Busch was a master craftsman of the form; his subjects were single-event moments in so-called ordinary life. The stories in this volume, selected by Pulitzer Prize winner Elizabeth Strout, are tales of families trying to heal their wounds, save their marriages, and rescue their children. In "Ralph the Duck," a security guard struggles to hang on to his marriage. In "Name the Name," a traveling teacher attends to students outside the school, including his own son, locked in a country jail. In Busch's work, we are reminded that we have no idea what goes on behind closed doors or in the mind of another. In the words of Raymond Carver, "With astonishing felicity of detail, Busch presents us with a world where real things are at stake—and sometimes, as in the real world, everything is risked."

From his first volume, Hardwater Country (1974), to his most recent, Rescue Missions (2006), this volume selects thirty stories from an "American master" (Dan Cryer, Newsday), showcasing a body of work that is sure to shape American fiction for generations to come.

From Booklist
Busch wrote 27 books during his short lifetime, 7 of them short story collections. It was a format he loved and used to great effect to expose, honor, and explain the unforgettable people and unforgiving landscape of upstate New York that was his home and inspiration. He was a master of the killer first line, delivering a hook so intriguing, so shocking, so seductive that readers couldn’t help but follow it all the way in. What they encountered next were crystalline tales of domesticity, steeped in betrayal and populated by the disillusioned and wounded. Fathers, sons, lawyers, judges, teachers, coaches, the divorced or soon-to-be—Busch’s characters navigate a tentative terrain. A supple and nuanced writer, Busch placed them within fully realized worlds, where failure abounds but the search for redemption prevails. Pulitzer Prize winner Strout (The Burgess Boys, 2013), who served as editor of this posthumous volume, knows a good story when she sees it, and she has flawlessly selected Busch’s best for a collection that honors the humanity and vision of a master storyteller. --Carol Haggas

Review
“Frederick Busch’s short stories are wonderful things, composed by a fine and far-seeing intelligence that never averts its eyes. His is a first-rate inquirer into the sorrows of ordinary people living ordinary lives and all of it in stripped-down prose―not minimalist but nuclear. Any reader coming to these stories for the first time is in for a revelation: the work of one of the great storytellers of our time.” (Ward Just)

“These luminous, risky stories by Frederick Busch make art out of the complications of everyday life. They come from a brilliant mind and a large heart, and their many pleasures and insights resonate long after the reading.” (Hilma Wolitzer)

“Frederick Busch faced every emotion with an open heart and tirelessly energetic language. Never unkind to his characters, he forgave inadequacy if it was genuine, an honest struggle. And of all the writers I can think of, Fred was the most impatient with inauthentic feeling. That richness of spirit, that passion and wit, made his stories indispensable. This book is a great a gift to keep his voice with us and to bring it to those who’ve never had the pleasure of hearing it.” (Rosellen Brown)

“[His stories] depict a range of small human dramas evoked with emotional intelligence and perfect pitch.” (Amanda Heller - Boston Globe)

“A master craftsman.” (New York Times Book Review)

“Showcases his mastery of the short story form…cement[s] Busch’s status as an exemplary craftsman.” (Publishers Weekly)

“You can count on Busch's prose to be startlingly revelatory, and the brilliance of his sentences endures even out of context… this collection will make more people see Frederick Busch for the master he was, one whose talent for subtle impact was downright maximal.” (Katie Arnold-Ratliff - New York Times Book Review)

“Deserves to place this ‘writer’s writer’ in the more widely read company of short-story masters like Raymond Carver and Richard Ford, with whom he is often compared.” (Emily Rapp - Boston Globe)

A treasure trove of short stories from a master of the genre; VERY highly recommended
By Timothy J. Bazzett
THE STORIES OF FREDERICK BUSCH is a veritable treasure trove of the art of the short story. No surprise, of course, since Busch has been much admired by other writers for decades now, not to mention readers like me who appreciate serious fiction done right. A Busch fan for over twenty years, I have read almost all of his novels by now, but had read only two of his story collections, so of the thirty stories gathered here only seven (from Too Late American Boyhood Blues and Rescue Missions: Stories) were familiar to me. I had planned to quickly skim those, but they were just so damn good that I ended up reading them all over again.

Short stories are always a hard sell in the book world, which is a shame, because they are such a demanding art form, and one which Fred Busch had long ago mastered. But Busch himself would have been the first to tell you that it took WORK, years of it, to finally get it right. I am reminded here of an autobiographical essay he wrote called "The Floating Christmas Tree" (in A Dangerous Profession: A Book About the Writing Life) about his early struggling days, newly married and living in a tiny New York apartment, where he would write late at night in the bathroom (so he wouldn't awaken his wife), perched hunched over on the edge of the tub, his typewriter on the toilet lid -

"I was twenty-two - and I was going to be a writer, I WAS a writer, I was going to get THEM to admit that I was a writer, and I sat in that awkward position and wrote my awkward prose."

I remember how I laughed when reading that, but by God Fred Busch kept at it. Witness these stories, every one of them perfect gems of the genre. And that same self-effacing sense of humor is displayed often, as well as the much darker themes which often fill Busch's fiction. In fact, Busch himself often shows up here, or thinly-disguised versions of him. From the clueless pudgy professor in "Widow Waters" to the desperate out-of-shape dog lover in "The Page," the well-meaning but buffoon-ish dispatcher in "The Baby in the Box," or the practical blustery father in "The Domicile," all the way to another concerned father of a returned veteran suffering from PTSD in "Patrols." Because Busch followed that oft-quoted precept of writers. He wrote about what he knew. And he knew about being a son, a brother, a husband, a father. And he was also a keen observer of human nature, and mined every aspect of what he knew and saw, often featuring small boys, abandoned husbands or disillusioned wives as his main characters.

Elizabeth Strout (another writer I very much admire) provides a most useful introduction here to Busch as a writer, a teacher and a man. But the stories themselves are the real stars. I called this book a treasure trove, and I will treasure it. My very highest recommendation.

- Tim Bazzett, author of the memoir, BOOKLOVER

The Master of the Short Story
By LWD01915
I was SO thrilled to find out that a collection (a large one!) of Frederick Busch's short stories had been published. I was not only a student of his at Colgate University but he was also my advisor. The first class I took with him was in the fall of my freshman year (1975, gulp). While I had a very solid base in literature for an incoming freshman, somehow the short story genre had been overlooked which would be considered unfortunate except that I had Professor Busch introduce me to them. He was passionate about Hemingway's short stories but like Ernest, Professor Busch wrote (or at least published) mostly novels and most in the years after I had graduated and although I have read most of the novels, I had only read a couple of his short stories. He died too young but I am so glad that his wonderful stories (I've only read a few so far-I'm savoring them) are finally available to all.

Humanity in all its Beauty and Pain
By Bookreporter
W. W. Norton & Company deserves the thanks of anyone who loves an intelligent, well-constructed short story, for publishing this career-spanning collection of more than 30 of them from the grossly underappreciated Frederick Busch. Busch, who died in 2006 at age 64, taught creative writing at Colgate for nearly four decades and produced seven collections of short stories. Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist Elizabeth Strout (OLIVE KITTREDGE; THE BURGESS BOYS) has selected nearly 500 pages worth of his best ones for this volume. In her generous introduction, after noting how the label “writer’s writer” frequently is attached to those, like Busch, whose careers combine literary craftsmanship and modest sales, she rightly observes that “any reader, whether they are a writer, or a lover of humanity, a consumer of literature for the sake of it alone, has a great deal to find here.”

Busch was a contemporary of writers like Raymond Carver, Richard Ford, Tobias Wolff and Andre Dubus II, once associated with the literary movement inelegantly named “dirty realism.” Like them, he shares a preoccupation with the predicaments of ordinary people, more focused on closely observed character studies and life’s barely noticeable turning points than dramatic plot twists. Though their circumstances are as varied as real life --- something that makes easy summary a challenge --- if there’s a dominant tone, here it’s one of regret. Whether it’s come about as a result of divorce, death or abandonment, many of Busch’s characters seem to understand that happiness is forever destined to lie just beyond their grasp.

One of the most affecting stories in that vein is “Ralph the Duck.” Its protagonist is a college security guard and Vietnam veteran, one of whose fringe benefits is his ability to take one course a semester, assuring “graduation in only sixteen years.” It’s only in the course of his rescue of a suicidal student that we learn the source of his private grief. “Dog Song” features a minor judicial officer who finds himself in the hospital, desperately trying to recall the circumstances of the automobile accident that’s landed him there.

“Reruns,” the story of a psychiatrist whose estranged wife has been taken hostage in Beirut, is an exceptionally powerful one. In it, he watches a grainy tape sent by her captors, “my wife on reruns, available as starkly as this, and to strangers.” Another story that reveals Busch’s skill at creating dramatic tension is “Bob’s Your Uncle,” where a troubled teenager, the son of the narrator’s former lover, travels from England to America for an unsettling visit with the man and his wife, who stands, in the story’s climactic paragraph, “between men gone wrong, or boys who hadn’t turned out right.”

Though many of the stories are set in the small towns of upstate New York, where Busch lived most of his life, they’re leavened by a few tales that take place in and around New York City, where he was born. In “Vespers,” a woman returns with her Midwestern lover to her Flatbush neighborhood, where she and her brother “had grown up, sometimes even together.” The narrator of “The Lesson of the Hotel Lotti” has “composed some recollections, for the sake of sentiment,” of her mother’s affair with a successful Manhattan maritime lawyer.

Busch is a confident prose craftsman; he doesn’t dazzle with experimental structures or other striking effects, but instead is content to hammer out one sturdy sentence after another. Where his mastery is most evident is in the opening lines of so many of these stories, thrusting us into that moment, identified by the great Irish short story writer Frank O’Connor “after which nothing else is ever the same.” A few examples, each one a model of concision, suffice to reveal his talent:

“It began for me in a woman’s bed, and my father was there though she wasn’t.”
“Rudy made me promises, and they came true.”
“Duane and I don’t talk about how she killed herself or where.”
“Did I tell you she was raped?
“I loved his mother once.”

Couple these striking beginnings with a facility for realistic dialogue, an ability to sketch a scene in efficient strokes, and a keen understanding of human psychology, and you instantly appreciate why Busch was held in such high regard by his fellow writers.

At any given moment in the literary world, it seems someone either is lamenting the death of the short story or trumpeting an imminent revival. Reading Frederick Busch renders those predictions irrelevant. In “The Floating Christmas Tree,” an essay in Busch’s 1999 collection A DANGEROUS PROFESSION, he claimed he wrote “for love, because of a compulsive need, out of a requirement that I cannot shake: that I justify my time on the earth by telling stories. That’s what I have to do. I have to do it.” These stories, with their deep empathy for humanity in all its beauty and pain, show how that time was more than justified.

The Yijing and Chinese Politics: Classical Commentary and Literati Activism in the Northern Song Period, 960-1127 (SUNY series in Chinese P

Discusses interpretations of the Yijing (the I Ching or Book of Changes) during the Northern Song period and how these illuminate the momentous changes in Chinese society during this era.

This book is the first comprehensive study of Yijing (Book of Changes) commentary during the Northern Song period, showing how it reflects a coming to terms with major political and social changes. Seen as a transitional period in China’s history, the Northern Song (960–1127) is often described as the midpoint in the Tang-Song transition or as the beginning of Song-Ming Neo-Confucianism. Challenging this traditional view, Tze-ki Hon demonstrates the complexity of the Northern Song by breaking it into three periods characterized by, alternately, the reestablishment of civil governance, large-scale reforms, and a descent into factional rivalry. To illustrate the distinct characteristics of these three periods, Hon compares commentaries by Hu Yuan, Zhang Zai, and Cheng Yi with five other Yijing commentaries, highlighting the broad parameters, as well as the specific content, of an extremely important world of discourse—the debate on literati activism. These differing views on the literati’s role in civil governance prove how lively, diverse, and intense Northern Song intellectual life was, while also reminding us how important it is to understand the history of the period on its own terms.

Tze-ki Hon is Associate Professor of History at the State University of New York at Geneseo.

The Woman Movement: Feminism in the United States and England (Routledge Library Editions: Women's History), by William L. O'Neill

This unusual book traces the development of the feminist movement in America and, to a lesser extent, in England. The comparison between the movements is enlightening.

Professor O’Neill starts with Mary Wollstonecraft and traces the development of the attack on Victorian institutions right up to the 1920s and on to the 'permissive' society in which we live. But the story covers all facets of the movement: the struggle for enfranchisement, for property rights, and education, for working women in industry, for temperance and social reform. These remarkable women leaders live in these pages, but even more in the Documents which form the second part of the book. Here their own voices come to us across the years with a sincerity which gives life to the language of a past age.

Winner of the 2014 International Association of Culinary Association (IACP) Award

The indispensable cookbook for genuine Italian sauces and the traditional pasta shapes that go with them.

Pasta is so universally popular in the United States that it can justifiably be called an American food. This book makes the case for keeping it Italian with recipes for sauces and soups as cooked in Italian homes today. There are authentic versions of such favorites as carbonara, bolognese, marinara, and Alfredo, as well as plenty of unusual but no less traditional sauces, based on roasts, ribs, rabbit, clams, eggplant, arugula, and mushrooms, to name but a few.

Anyone who cooks or eats pasta needs this book. The straightforward recipes are easy enough for the inexperienced, but even professional chefs will grasp the elegance of their simplicity.

Cooking pasta the Italian way means:

  • Keep your eye on the pot, not the clock.

  • Respect tradition, but don’t be a slave to it.

  • Choose a compatible pasta shape for your sauce or soup, but remember they aren’t matched by computer. (And that angel hair goes with broth, not sauce.)

  • Use the best ingredients you can find—and you can find plenty on the Internet.

  • Resist the urge to embellish, add, or substitute. But minor variations usually enhance a dish.

  • How much salt? Don’t ask, taste!

Serving and eating pasta the Italian way means:

  • Use a spoon for soup, not for twirling spaghetti.

  • Learn to twirl; never cut.

  • Never add too much cheese, and often add none at all.

  • Toss the cheese and pasta before adding the sauce.

  • Warm the dishes.Serve pasta alone. The salad comes after.

  • To be perfectly proper, use a plate, not a bowl.

The authors are reluctant to compromise because they know how good well-made pasta can be. But they keep their sense of humor and are sympathetic to all well-intentioned readers.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Picking up where the Encyclopedia of Pasta (2009) left off, this manifesto on Italian noodles is meant to provide recipes for home cooks preparing dishes in modern kitchens. While the previous work focused on cataloguing and describing Italian pasta, this book is meant to help those out outside of Italy cook like Italians. With sections on every step of making pasta dishes—e.g., the types of wheat employed, the various forms and how to create them, how to cook the noodles properly, when and how to add sauce, which ingredients to have in the pantry, and which equipment is necessary to get the best results—every aspect of making one of the world's favorite comfort foods is covered. Of course, no noodle would be complete without the right condimento (anything that goes on a noodle), and this cookbook covers those in great detail as well. From last-minute sauces, made primarily with ingredients one has lying around, to fresh vegetable, herb, and mushroom sauces, selected based on which ingredients are in season; fish and seafood sauces; and meat sauces, you can go months without ever repeating a dish. The book also contains helpful hints, like which sauces taste better when prepared a day before serving and which wines pair well with each dish. (Oct.)

From Booklist
Each author unquestionably expert in the history and culture of pasta, Zanini de Vita and Fant open up the secrets of Italian pasta cookery. The most familiar of Italian dishes and soul of the Italian table, pasta in its many forms holds Americans of all ages in thrall with its versatility and mass appeal. But many Americans freeze up when confronted with an unusual pasta shape or a novel sauce, and they wonder how properly to match the right sauce with the right pasta, fearing they may violate some hallowed tradition. The authors offer a host of sauces to accompany both fresh and dried pastas, and for each they list the pasta shapes to best complement the sauce in perfect harmony. Cooks wanting to achieve their own pasta shapes get complete instructions for handmade egg pasta and plain flour-and-water versions. --Mark Knoblauch

Review
Revelation lies between these covers. With everything we Americans have done with, and to, pasta and sauce, there's a sublime goodness and rightness in the thousands of ways Italy has paired the two for a very long time. Each dish evolved from individual communities; each of those groups' culinary instincts was shaped by different experiences. Oretta and Maureen capture that innate rightness and those sensibilities in every recipe. Taste these dishes and feel how they were meant to pair up. Their goodness is timeless. This book is as much a fascinating lesson in Italian character as it is generous with dishes rarely tasted beyond their home kitchens. --Lynne Rossetto Kasper, host of American Public Media s The Splendid Table(

Zanini De Vita and Fant's Sauces & Shapes accomplishes the impressive feat of presenting a thoroughly Italian perspective on pasta in a package that all American cooks can use and understand. Packed with information and advice, their recipes for classic dishes are definitive. --Mitchell Davis, executive vice president of the James Beard Foundation and author of Kitchen Sense

There are no better experts on the ideology of pasta the union of a noodle and its proper condiment than Oretta and Maureen. Sauces & Shapes contains a smart balance of history, tradition, and love. The recipes are easy enough to prepare at home but not yet ubiquitous in American kitchens. It s a work I look forward to exploring. --Mario Batali, chef/owner of Otto, Babbo, and Del Posto Restaurants, New York"

What the world needs now
By Primo
Yet another book about pasta.
An insightful book that challenges its readers to consider the obvious. Not just consider it,but ponder it.
Which shapes go best with which sauces? Which sauces go best with which shapes? "Sauces and Shapes" is a thought provoking book of ideas that raises as many questions as it answers: To start: Cold water or hot? Salted or unsalted? To finish: Reserve the cooking liquid or discard it? In this book, nothing is what it appears to be at first glance. As in life:There are no easy answers.

Bravissimo
By Robert Bonnell
Sauces & Shapes is a cookbook for those who want to try to make real pasta, as it’s made in Italian homes. I’m greatly enjoying working my way through the delicious sauce recipes, which are rigorous in their demand for authentic ingredients, but are otherwise generally quite easy. I haven’t gotten up the courage to make any of the pasta noodles myself, but the instructions are there for a dizzying variety of pasta shapes, and they’re clear and well-illustrated. Perhaps soon I’ll be trying my hand at tagliatelle verdi and even garganelli, thanks to this very informative and attractive cookbook. Carefully following several of the sauce recipes has already resulted in some fine meals in our home, and I’m looking forward to more.

For anyone who has a real interest in cooking
By Toni Vicalvi
This is a book you have to READ not just grab recipes from. I LOVE this book. If you want to learn about Italians' idea of pasta this it the book for you. It's not about the shapes or the sauces but a philosophy of flavor that can teach things to be used in anything you cook. These women have opinions and they state them without being snarky or condescending. I've learned a whole new way of thinking about what I cook. Very glad I bought it.
