Milwaukee is best known for its beer--and rightfully so. But in the days of Prohibition, the big alcohol suppliers were not Miller, Blatz, Schlitz, and Pabst. The Mafia had control, and it made its money by running alcohol as far away as Canada and Indiana, as well as with counterfeiting, the numbers racket, and two of the biggest heists in American history. From then on, the sky was the limit, as the Mafia indulged in extortion, protection rackets, and skimming from Las Vegas casinos. The Cream City had its crooked lawyers, corrupt cops, and even a mayor on the take. There was the blood of those who dared to stand in the syndicate's way, who were found dead in ditches or as victims of car bombs. The members of the Mafia included doctors, real estate men, restaurateurs, tavern owners, funeral directors, union presidents, and the most famous Milwaukee gangster of all, Frank Balistrieri. While now considered extinct, the Milwaukee Family was once a dominant force in the Midwest.

Review
Milwaukee has kept its murders and mishaps out of books. Until now.
From Vito Guardalabene's arrival from Italy until the days of controlling the Teamsters union and paying off public officials, Milwaukee was a city of Bullets, Blood and Beer. The Milwaukee Mafia relies on previously unseen police reports, FBI investigative notes, coroner's records, newspaper articles, family lore and more to bring to light an era of Milwaukee's history that has been largely undocumented and shrouded in myth. This is not only a story of organized crime. It is also about immigration, the American Dream, urban planning, law enforcement, and politics, and how all these elements come together to form a solid narrative.

Five Stars and Worth Every One
By Rick Warner
Gavin is the first person to take on the Milwaukee Mafia in print. It operated in the shadow of the behemoth known as the Chicago Outfit, but Milwaukee still had connections of its own as far as San Diego and New York. It took a lot of time, hard work and money to find the photos that made it into this book. I have several Arcadia books covering New York, New Orleans, Chicago and Los Angeles, and am glad to add this to my collection. (By the way, I've noticed some of the other reviewers complaining about the lack of text and that there's no index -- that is how the publisher makes its books and they shouldn't blame the author for publishing decisions). I commend the author for being the first person to write the history of the Milwaukee Mafia and provide us with some amazing photos.

Crime in Brew Town!
By Mike O'Connor
Although it never compared to Chicago, Milwaukee had its share of bootleggers, murders, robbers, crime gangs and crime lords. Gavin Schmitt presents a pictorial history of crime in Brew Town in this 2012 Arcadia Publishing release.
In 128 pages, Schmitt traces the development of Milwaukee's crime families, bootlegging activities during Prohibition, prostitution and the rise and fall of Milwaukee's most famous crime lord, Frank Balistieri. Though there had been other bosses before Balistieri such as Vito Guardalabene, Joseph Amato, Sam Ferrara and especially John Alioto, he outshone them all. Balistieri expanded the family's power and influence yet his personal flaws especially his arrogance eventually spelled the end of the Milwaukee crime family.
MILWAUKEE MAFIA is bursting with over 200 well-captioned vintage photographs of crime lords, underlings, assorted criminals, police, crime scenes and various abodes.
Crime buffs and those interested in Milwaukee's seamier side will enjoy MILWAUKEE MAFIA. It offers an informed pictorial guide through a century of Brew Town crime. Recommended.

Super stories & pictures of Milwaukee's Mafia!!
By harriet105
My husband lived in the Old Third Ward when he was a child - there are pictures in this book that take him back to those wonderful days. He even saw a place where he worked as a teenager. Plus, growing up into Law Enforcement, the pictures and names brought cases back and more stories! He absolutely loves the book.
